Title: Lets talk about PUNCTUALITY!!!!
Post by: drumzalicious on July 29, 2009, 02:11:42 AM
Whats good people of LGM? This idea came to me from another thread so i figured i would dedicate a thread to it.

Lets talk about punctuality. Being on time.

Often times or almost all the time i have gone to gigs only to see people show up later than the call time. even at rehearsals.

Quick Life Lesson . . . .

You WILL NOT make it in the music industry being LATE!!!

I have gotten gigs myself just because the person knew i would be there on time.

If you have a gig that starts at 6 and soundcheck is at 5. DO NOT SHOW UP AT 5:30. ESPECIALLY as the drummer.

When people tell you something starts at a certain time thats when you are supposed to be READY to play. In other words if your soundcheck starts at 5. You as the drummer know you have to set up all your equipment. even if you are using gear thats provided you know it takes longest for a drummer to set up than any other instrument. we have to adjust seat heights, move cymbal stands, tune the drums etc....

Therefore you should get there at a time that leaves enough room for you to be set up and ready to start playing at 5 on the dot.

Me personally i would be there at 4. It allows enough time to not rush myself with tuning and setting up. Therefore you wont be playing your gig uncomfortably because you usually dont have time to be moving things around once you start.

I just wanted to share this observation i have had with various musicians and not even just musicians of color but all musicians. It only makes you look that much better when the artist shows up and the drummer is already set up and they can proceed in a timely manner. NO ONE likes sitting in the sound check wasting time while someone is setting up and it only makes you look bad.

Share your thoughts/experiences  ;D

Yep I agree !!!
I like to warm up before show too.
Its better to have time to prepare your drums the way you want and not rush it so when your playin, after each song you take this cymbal stand lil closer here, that one lil further there and on and on ..
and yea drummer should be the first on the spot becuz his soundcheck takes more time than others. Do the snare again, mmm ok ok ... do the kick again .. ok play some groove, well ok ok hmmm can you do the snare again, somettins not right ... hey you guys do you have all the cables right, becuz 10" inch tom, well I can here 14inch in it? how come, check it out ...
and so on and it takes time and group is gettin lil bit angry haha ....
well thats my experience ...

That was one of my pet peeves as an MD.  If you have a good excuse(like getting off work late as I have myself) or you tell me ahead of time then I'm cool with it.  But you just saunter in when you're ready then I'm a little perturbed by that.

Todd Sucherman had a very informative blurb about this on his dvd.

I think punctuality is key in all we do. It says volumes about your character before you even speak.

I'm all for being on time ..I once had an engagement and the MD told me to meet him up at his spot @ 10 pm ...now it was a 40 min drive for me but I got there @ 9:45 .No one was there , thus causing me to have to wait in the parking lot..do you know I didn't get a call until like 10:30 and dude was asking me if I wanted anything from 'Mickey D's" ..man I was hot!!  :o

It seems like being on time is almost a thing of the past...soundchecks starting an hour late, practice and rehearsal starting late..it's not a good look!

OMG, I have seen so much Lateness!!!

It can be cultural or because of schedule conflict or an emergency, but chronic lateness/not showing up at all without prior notice indicates a lack of RESPECT for others...

:(

I actually quit my last church gig because I was sick of them starting late.  How is it that they claim to serve an on-time God but they are never on time???  ?/? ?/? ?/?

Another thing that bugs me is extended breaks during a show.  You can see the concern on people's faces like, any day the band can get back up lol.  But, if its not my gig, there is little I can do.  I just make sure things like that dont happen when I book the show.

Regardless of instrument, being reliable takes precedence over just about anything, even talent. You can have the best players, but they aren't of any use to you if you're concerned about if and when they show up.

There's plenty of people with talent who lose gigs to people without talent, and sometimes they get bitter about it. No reason to be bitter, just get an alarm clock!

It all starts with the head. There is this church i played for a few times in Boston where the Pastor and his wife got to the service at 10:45 and the service started at 10. The praise leaders wait till like 10:30 to start praise service because the pastors be so late

...yes and Amen!  I'm having fun reading all of this and I pray that a lot of church leaders read this thread to improve on their punctuality.  8)

IMO its about responsible communication, as drummers we want things kinda down to the minute, esp when we're bringing our gear.

I remember doing this 3 piece (drums bass and keys)jazz gig at for this birthday party. The guy who booked us at the last minute negotiated for us to begin playing at 6pm. Now, from the beginning, I told him my boys had another gig at 10, so we can do the gig from 6-9. He agreed. We were there and set up by 6. There were 2 women in there setting the room up. So we decided to begin playing (that was the agreement right) People started mosying in there like 7:30. So after that, the birthday guy didn't get there till 8:45...everyones having a good time...so at 9:00  BAMMM!!! we ended our 3rd set and we started breaking down. So everyones like, where are you guys going?...the guy who booked us ran over to me and was like, can you guys stay another 45 min? I asked him for another $700, needless to say he couldn't afford it....while leaving, i told him "our agreement was from 6-9..and it wasn't my fault you or your people weren't here on time and we were", it was really funny.

i did a gig last sunday which showed me how bad poor punctuality can get

i live in london and the gig was in southhampton, so it was arranged that we would get the train up there. so the promoters of the gig sent the train ticktets with the band leader (bad idea) as opposed to sending everyone their individual tickets. so with this we all agreed to meet at the staion by 8:15.

so the train was due at 08:35, and me and a few other band mates were at the train station by 8:00. long story short, everyones but the bandleader/ticket holder is here and it is now 8:33, 2 minutes till my train is leaving. and to make matters worse the ticket holder is on the underground so we cant get trhough to his phone to see how far they are.

fortuntely come 8:34 we see the guy, and he starts sprinting like usain bolt to catch the train. luckily we just made made it.

however the bulk of the problems didnt stop there but thats another story. which shows how not only poor punctuality can affect your gig, but poor organisation can destroy it. ;D

I have expereinced this many times and it wasnt just with musicians.

How about when the Sound Technicians are LATE! I was a member of a group that was hosting a Gospel Jam. We used a proffessional sound company to run the event. The event started at 6:30, sound check was at 5:30. The sound techs, did not arrive until 6:00. I literally had to call them, to see where they were at....talk about being unprofessional!!!
