Once again can someone please tell me what is so "Un-American" about socialism? I mean isn't education in someway socialism? Could you argue that welfare and even some of the entitlements such as medicare and social security are socialism?
I understand America is about capitalism, self-reliance, etc but my gosh what is so bad about goverenment owning certain things? Maybe if the government took more charge of certain things maybe we wouldn't have had such a big economic mess!

Conrail (Consolidated Rail Corporation) was a great example of socialism. The government took over the assets and operations of several bankrupt North Eastern rail lines (including the embattled Penn Central which at the time was the largest corporate bankruptcy in U.S. history), combined them into one system and it became a profitable, publicly traded, non-government entity. Socialism is nothing new, but in the minds of many, it is (and this was alluded to in the clip) a prelude to communism and thus, the end of democracy and America as we know it.

Are you serious? Do you REALLY want the government running everything for you? You do realize that once that happens it ain't goin back to the way it is now.

No. What I'm saying is why is it such a big deal if the government has to intervene on certain things and run it for a period of time.
Why does so many think that Obama wants America to be a socialist nation. He's already said he believes in the self-reliance, rugged individualistic idea we have in America (I disagree with the rugged individualism) so why would so many assume he's trying to lead us to a socialist nation?...ugghh!

Because the government WON'T give 'em back AND it'll find a way to make the rich richer. :-\

That's the frightening situation that I believe that we're in right now;
Our free-market capitalism system is broken because of waste and greed.
Our government-run/funded system is broken because of waste and greed.
Through it all, somehow the very rich continue to stay very rich, the middle-class seems to be shrinking, and the poor are really, really, stinking poor.
There is always a money trail and at one end are the few rich and at the other end are the many poor, regardless of which system is put into practice.
If the waste and greed could be eliminated, I think either capitalism or socialism would work just fine, but the common denominator of waste and greed is sinful people.
God's been trying to deal with them for thousands of years...

I won't sully the truthfulness of your post being large and obtrusive, I'll just simply cosign and KIM. :)

One thing you're forgetting: we control the government more than we control our companies.

Communism and Socialism (in their pure sense) are both forms of Democracy, just different levels of it. There are no Communist governments, and I don't think there ever was. Socialism, on the other hand, has been employed by many countries from Canada to North Korea.
In any form of government, you can have abuse. Our representative form, by its nature, puts a few people in control of many. Combine that with the things that gtrdave stated, and you have what we see.

I think people just hear socialism and think of Stalin and all that....idk...

True Democracy is "majority rule".
Representative Democracy, what we have in the U.S., is (or should be) a more favorable option for those without a majority voice.
That said, how I wish that we "controlled" the government, but we really have very little to do with who we put into office, other than to have to select from the very few who get the majority of $$$ behind them.

Fear is usually easier to utilize in affecting change than knowledge.
-
Do we all know what socialism is? :-\
Having the government run certain programs is NOT SOCIALISM.
I repeat:
Having the government run certain programs is NOT SOCIALISM.

Yep.

I don't think there is much that a minority group can change. Civil rights is a parallel to this: without getting the power of the majority behind us, we would still have segregation.
Their, the far-Right's, goal is to get independents, and fringe-Democrats, on their side. The only way that will happen is if Obama screws something, I think.

So what happened to the cliche "government, by the people, for the people?" Doesn't the hardly any to small government philosophy contradict that statement?

But in some regard I truly believe that capitalism is what could me a big factor towards the greed particuarly. You have to understand that capitalism is really about profit. I even studied where some justify greed as the means of getting help to the ones who need it.
I'm not saying socialism or communism would totally eliminiate greed however we probably have a chance for things to be more equal financially speaking.

That's the beauty of the system. It's a means to satisfying human nature to have "more". Despite all the negatives you can say about it, we love the freedom to spend and make money anyway we please (as long as it's legal of course). I've been told by someone who used to live in Canada, the government placed a cap on how much money doctors can earn. As a reult, Candadian docs are trying to come over here where they can make mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!

I've read that there's a salary cap there also.
...The bible says something about money. ;)

That's going to happen to some degree regardless.. However we have all seen what happens when you "..get big government off our backs.." to quote Ronald Reagan in the 80s.. I can still hear his voice saying that.. and I can still here the chants of "FOUR MORE YEARS!!!!"
We all have seen that when "big government" get's off the backs of big business.. big business gets all over our necks.
The republican party had an ideal opportunity to show itself as the party of Lincoln over the last 8 years.... G.W. Bush was elected primarily because of the black vote in the last election quiet as it is kept.. Between the blacks who did not vote at all and the ones who voted for him, despite the shennanigans in Ohio & Detroit.. he won the last election. This was not made common knowledge because the powers that be still do not want to make a big deal about just how powerful the black vote is...
Capitalism works to a point.. but the end result is always going to be an eventual widening of the gap between the haves and the have nots.. and the haves will do whatever it takes to retain that power and control.. and we all know that power concedes nothing without struggle.. If a capitalistic democracy doen't evolve into a socialistic democracy it will evolve into a totalitarian fascist state.. at leats thats my opinion anyway.. I could be wrong.
