I am a beginner and i was wondering what keys are easy to play in. I am learning F and Bb but noticed that most songs are not in them keys. Please help :o
-
It depends on what you mean by easy. If you're talking about in terms of finger position (on the keys) then I'd say: C, F, G. But, if you're talking about in terms of progression memorization, then I'd say: C, F, G, Eb, Ab,Bb, Db.
Just sharing my opinion

I agree with you Jonathan. I would pick an easy song like "Thank You Lord" and learn it in every key. I would probably learn them in the key order Jonathan gave. You will probably see some chords being used over and over again in the progressions.
Just my opinion.

The more I play, the more I wonder if any key is any easier to play in than any other key. Jermaine Griggs plays in Db so well and has me thinking in Db a lot, so Db has really become a lot easier than I thought before his teaching.
Actually, C is the hardest for me to play. I usually modulate out of it . . . maybe because my ear is accustomed to everything but C.
But I think that if you start seeing some keys as "hard" and others as "easy," you set you a mental block for yourself. Just let GOD show you how to be yourself in any key, and be a blessing.
However, your statement puzzles me. Many gospel songs are in the keys of Bb and F, many of the slow moving gospel ballads that really minister to people are in these keys (Safe in His Arms by Milton Brunson, for example). So you are on the right path to learn these keys well. :D
Lastly, the Bible says to strengthen your stakes and lengthen your chords, for you will break forth on the right hand and on the left. I take that to mean don't limit yourself, but let GOD show you a lot of things so we can be a blessing to His Church.
Be Blessed . . . .

So BBoy, you're telling me that you don't mind playing in the KEY OF B?!?!? :D
Just playing with ya brotha. I agree about the mental block thing. But, you said it yourself, you werent' really thinking about Db until you bought Jermaine's tapes. Now Db is your "bag baby".
*side note* you don't like the KEY OF C?!?!?!? You are the first person I've ever heard say that. I know people that play EVERYTHING in C then use the modulate button on their keyboards so they don't have to learn other keys *end side note*
I want to be able to "hear and play" in all keys; but for now, I going with what's comfortable while learning to stretch my keyboard skills. PRAY FOR ME!!!!!!!!
Be Blessed

I don't like playin in the key of C either...I hear it soo much that i get SICK of it!! I used to have a favorite key and yes...it was C then later Db/C# and now it don't matter what key it is...I can play them comfortably....they are not a problem to me
-
:D Praise the Lord!!!!! I agree with BBoy. If you Pray and Practice constantly, you will overcome all the keys. I started out with C. Now every key is my favorite. It is so rewarding to get a key down packed because you know that it was the Lord who helped you. Once you get all the keys down packed, you can use the things you play in one key and add it to the others. God bless :D 8)

I wanna be like Dominick when I grow up (in my keyboard skills). But, I just like ya'll are sayin' that people shouldn't have a favorite key, should one "hate" a key?
Just asking!! :D
Ya'll be BLESSED!! MAN, I LOVE this site!!!

Silly woman!!

it actually depends on the type of song for me, i like F and C for faster songs and Ab and Db/C# for slower song but i'm on my way to learning all of them so that everykey will be my favorite key
-
This is a little late in the game, but ya, my favirote key is Db cause I get to mess around with the pwetty black keys =D
-
Yeah..D..thats my favorite..key2drive in...LOLOL.. Well..I just found out i don't have a favorite key to play in..cause..i found out all the good songs are in the key..that i had problems with..so i decide that i would ..learn..to play in all the keys...so..i got the songbook ..Kurt Carr..u kow the song "In the sanctuary"..well in that book..it modulates into 11 keys...learn to play a song in all keys... Now..i read music but..when i used to see the #####s {Bmaj} and ######s G# I would want to run from the piano. So, i decided to ..just say ok..this is ridiculous. some of my favorite songs are in those keys 5bs, and 6bs...I decided to take a week and just play my songs in a difficult key{bmaj #####s} till i feel comfortable in..and i normally move up octaves and play so i can get use to them.
After about a week i move on to the other keys..so now..i play in all of them..if u don't feel comforable in playing in a key..stay there till u feel comfie playing in them move to your next..Key..and not the key to drive the car in...LOLOL... Now, getting back to the question..my more relax key to play in,..i believe i would have to say...is bbbs Eb... :P ...Oh..and don't forget to find a song u like thats in a difficult key..its easier to learn to play in the key u hate the most.

I love the key of Eb. It is my favorite cuz I know all the progressions, chords, runs, theory, everything about that key.

THE MOST EASIEST KEY IN THE WORLD TO PLAY IN IS B!
I just had to sit that on the table. I tell my organist that and he laughs at me. Like last sunday, Sis. Toni (our 1st keyboardist) wasn't their so I was fillin' in for her. Soooo, for Altar Call, we play Victory is Mine, so I decided to play that in B. And our organist is a clown, lol, so when i told him, he gets up from the organ and starts clappin'. Our MOM was starin' at him like "what are you doin'" and he tells her he can't play in that key, and I just wanted 2 post this story cause I thought it was funny =P

OMG!!!  That's funny!!!...I agree..B is easy...It used to be hard for me (of course as a beginner  ) but it's a breeze cause I think of either F# or D when I play it.. :D
-
I never looked at it like that, its an eye opener - thanks for sharing. Because if you think about it, its like you can play by ear but if someone puts sheet music in your face you'll go into shock. 8O Or better, telling the organist the song is in C# when they are use too Db.

I know I am real late but as you probably can tell my favorite key is Eb that is all my church sings in it what the preacher preachs in I just love that key. But I also love Ab but like everyone said if you practice in all keys they will all be a piece of cake.
-
Jazz guys like F, Eb, Ab, Db, Bb....
Really, any key can become 'easy' once you put enough time on them. If you keep only practicing in F and Bb then those keys will be easier than any other key that you have not learned.
If you want to get calls to play, and keep getting called, be able to play in any key.

Im comfortable in everything except A and E even though i can use theory to get by, it just doesnt sound as sure as in my other keys...B isnt that hard for me depending on the song though. Everywhere else, im decent...but not like ddw4e yet
-
Guess what? I am starting to love the key of E!
8O
Yes, E major. Play in it sometimes, just noodle around . . . doesn't it sound like New York suburb music, maybe in the eighties? It would appeal, I think to more conservative people who want music for retreats and such. You can't shout in E, :x but it has a light, easy, "pop" feel to it.
Just my 2 cents. I still don't like C, by the way

Oh whatever...John Peters   You tha man!

D, E, and A are the hardest for me.
-
don't ever give me a song in E, F#, or B. I won't leave the organ unless I'm absolutely lost, but you won't hear what I'm playing. I just fumble around. my advice to ANYONE. practice in those three keys as much as possible, becuase if you don't then those three keys will easily become the hardest to play. i've played in those keys a whole lot of times, and i still have to review the key before i play in them. my mother or any keyboardist on ours is lucky. they just transpose if they want to. me, on the organ, i just sit and fumble till the song is over. my fave key...C!!!!! that's right! my first key, my easiest key! Also Ab and Bb.
