Can most keyboard players sing?......I think in order to play by ear a person has to be able to hear a tone internally and project it outwardly, so I think its safe to say that most keyboard players can at least "carry a tune"....having a good singing voice is a whole other story. I just thought I would throw that out there cause I get tempted to sing when i'm playing at home but.......I wouldnt try it in church, especially after recently recording myself, hehe

a lot of keyboard players cant sing. I've seen on several instructional dvds where the artist tries to sing and sounds horrible, even thought they are great songwriters......not gonna say any names......
Now me, I dont even try to sing in public....

they may not have good singing voices but......i'm sure they are not tone deaf, in order to "comp" you have to be able to recoginze tones internally.......who knows, hehe

If the keyboardist cannot sing, they would definitely have to be able to hear a tone internally......otherwise they would not be able to play in the right key. I started out singing and that has helped me carry over to playing.

I can't sing, but I certainly have an idea of how vocals should sound.
I once read from a jazz site that we should hear and create music from our head in order to play/ harmonize with instruments.
I use those voices I hear in my head to harmonize by instrument half the time.
I'm embarrassed to sing in public because I sing better when I sing like a girl (soprano or alto).
Anyone with the same problem as me?

Same here, I can vocalize how the note should sound but no voice for singing. I know when a note is off though. When I play I hear the chord first so that if I hit a wrong note I'll hear it right away.

Mus, I was sure and positive that I could not sing except in harmony. I have always been able to be in tune and in key really well, but never had a voice for soloing in my opinion. I learned to play the keyboard and was workig with a male chorus. I was teaching them songs and singing parts and demonstrating how songs should go. (for the lead singers ) One of the guys said, why don't you lead some of the songs. We'll back you up. I had to try it. I didn't like how I sounded but people seemed to like the songs that I led. They would ask me to sing. Now I am not perry como but I am not embarrassing myself.
People might like your singing.

It might be a confidence thing.......but you said people "might" like your singing.......its the "might" that keeps me quiet, haha.........gotta admit though its always nice to see someone that can both play well and sing at the same time

Thanks for the words of encouragement :) Funny you say that because I experienced that on Sunday after service: Some choir members were practising Thankful (Worship Medley) by Destiny's Child for some function. I heard them singing & I sang along the part which I thought was missing & I was hearing in my head whilst I was looking for someone to talk to.
The next thing I felt this young lady ,with big eyes & mouth open wide, grasping me & calling me to join! I warned her that I was not as good in front of people as I might sound when I'm just singing for me. I can't even start chancing with a song with so many turns / required so much voice control.
That's to say I get your point.
I still am not comfortable singing in front of people- I'm always scared I'll make a mistake & that's it! So Jude, U'r right- a brother is not confident enough.
ps:
Since this thread started, I've been practising my singing- but it's more for my own enjoyment than for the public ;D
