Title: Nice passing tones to Major chords
Post by: bullet1 on December 15, 2009, 10:37:27 AM
Okay so I found out that I love diminished chords when going to a minor chord for a passing tone.  I really don't like the way they sound when going to major chords.  What do some of you guys do for passing tones when going to major chords.  For example a simple song like give thanks with a greatful heart.  Playing in the key of C# When going to the 5 after the 6 minor what could you do or do some of you do.  Anything would be helpful

Thanks LGM Fam!

I'd do one of my favorite movements.  I walk down from the Bb minor to an A minor, then an Ab minor before going to the 1 (Db Major):

Give Thanks in Db

Gb-C/F-A-C-F   Give
Db-Ab-Db/Ab-Db-F Thanks

Bb, C, Db, Eb With a

C-F-Gb/Bb-D-F Grateful Heart

F-A-Eb/Ab-Db-F

Bb-F/Ab-Bb-C-Eb Give thanks

Bb-Bb/F-Bb-Db To

A-A/E-A-C The

Ab-Ab/Eb-Ab-B Ho-
-/Eb ly

Db-Ab-Db/F-Ab-Db One

F-A/Ab-Db-Eb-Ab Give

Gb-Ab-Bb/Db-Eb-F-Ab Thanks......

etc, etc.

Ya know, I'm thinking that any min 7 or min7, flat 5 would work as a nice passing chord to a major chord.  :-\

On this particular song, I'm wondering why you want a passing chord there at all. I would just go straight to the 5. After the 5, I would do a passing chord to 4.

As far as the topic goes, some good passing chords that lead to major chords are:

dom. 7's (any dominant type chord)
other major chords
m7's
augmented chords (functions like a dominant chord)

I was  thinking to put a passing chord there because there was a enough time to do something I guess.  How does a CMinor11 sound to anybody?

Cm11 is a nice chord.

Indeed. I use this chord as a substitution for any chord that is built off of any one of the first 4 notes of this chord, especially Eb, and G.

I usually play it like this:

C-Eb-G / G-Bb-D-F
