I'll tell you...for a fee.
:)
You pay an initial listing fee which is usually under $1. You get a basic entry with IIRC 2 or 3 regular pics. If you want to do extra pics or add more features to make your listing more noticible it there are fees for that stuff. Then if your item sells you pay a final fee depending on how much your item sold for. If you are just a now and again seller the fees aren't that bad.
You don't have to pay when you list it. Ebay sends out a invoice telling you how much you owe like weekly or monthly I dont remember. BE WARNED that if you are a new seller that when you item sells paypal will hold your money for either 30 days, they get a shipping conformation, or the buyer leaves you a positive feedback. So if its something you need to dump off for quick cash I would look elsewhere.
This should help some http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html (http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html)
Try craigslist.
Try craigslist.
This...for anything local and possible stuff that's too large and too much of a hassle to ship.
I've used Ebay for years with great success, but you have to know how to word your ad properly in order to avoid future hassles.
For example, I'll try to list the shipping costs up front but I'll state that any international shipping will be calculated after the auction has ended and the buyer will be notified within 48 hours of the final cost.
I'll also put stipulations on payment, preferring PayPal to expedite immediate shipping, but I'll hold the item if the buyer is paying by check or money order, in order to avoid a scam of any kind.
Also, stating that the buyer has to pay within 5 or 7 days is good practice as I've had some people bid and win and then claim that they forgot that they even bid.
All that said, I've had REALLY good success selling stuff through craigslist. No fees = :)

Craigslist is mostly about location. If you don't live near a decently populated area you won't have much luck selling esp niche items. But if you do you will have better success.
Craigslist is just as easy to set up as ebay and there are no fees for listing. A few things about craigslist is you will be spammed, and you will be low balled ei Your selling a TV for 150 you will get email from people offering $50 bucks CASH in hand. I would say about 1 in 3 to 4 responses to your ad will be legitimate. Craigslist is more cut and dry where as Ebay is a process and a headache at times.
Plus nobody lists free stuff on Ebay, and thats the best type of transaction for me.
You probably want to check out http://www.freecycle.org/ (http://www.freecycle.org/) That's all that site is about.I did it last week, and chose the digest format. So all the posts of the day would sho up in one email . But noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, the emails kept coming, and coming, and coming, and coming................................. .....

You may want to set up a separate email just for eBay/Craigslist/Freecycle types of transactions.
Craigslist seems good for local area, services, and things not easily packable (like Hammond B3's).
Our church lists for volunteers for our Praise Team...
As for ebay, I've never sold anything on it, and I just bought something on there for the first time last week. I'll probably continue to buy stuff on there (from reputable sellers), but I dont think I sell stuff there.
Craigslist is great because you can get rid of stuff within minutes after posting it. I had to get rid of some speakers when I moved, and a guy picked em up within 45 minutes of me posting the ad.
And when buying stuff on craigslist you can usually negotiate a lower price, I dont know if thats possible on ebay.
I guess the downside of craigslist is that you will have to meet strange people. If I'm selling something small, I'll either deliver it or meet the person at a public location. Ladies, If you have to have the seller come to your house, make sure there is a man there to protect you.
Serial killers kill men, too. NEVER meet anyone at your house. NEVER. :-\
