I play a Fender Jazz 5 string and I tune a half step down as well. No issues. B string cuts through good for me. However, I have SCN (Somarium Cobalt Noiseless) pickups. Typically, most Fender Jazz basses either MIA or MIM, the B will be decent. Your best bet will be to go and try one out and see what u think.

What was it about the SCN pickups that impress u the most? I'm looking into a pair of Barts pickups for my
Fender Jazz 5. Trying to get some compare opinions first. Thanks !!

Fender B strings are hit and miss! But it's mainly a matter of having the right strings, properly cut nut and making sure the strings are properly wound on the tuning posts!

To me the SCN pickups are real clean. They bring out the alder tone on Jazz basses. They are noiseless. No feedback. Barts are good pickups as well. The SCN's were made for the jazz bass. The only disadvantage to SCNs is the highs are semi-highs with clear tone. Some might say thats good. In other words if you like twangy highs, the SCNs are not for you.

Well, I'm a Lakland (JO5) player. Best B in the business in my opinion. Be advised the 5's are 35" scale.

Lakland is a better made and quality instrument. The 5's are 35" scale. Laklands are FULL 19mm spacing. Fender 5's are a hair short of 19mm. Different neck profiles. Lakland necks are flatter. Although Fender has stepped up it's game of late, there are still many hits or misses! Lakland is more consistent in quality and craftsmanship! Just my honest opinion. I've owned Fenders previously. Laklands are what Fender should be!  I love the sound of a stock passive Fender though! Pure funk! I added Nordstrand dual coil pickups and an Audere pre to my Lakland and it smokes now!

DW, can you elaborate on the tonal differences before and after your upgrades?

Basically, I did not like the stock Lakland pickups. They had this midrangy bark that wasn't working for me and I couldn't dial it out. I also could not get any high end out of it. The Nordies opened up the sound for me (further removing that annoying single coil hum when I solo'd the bridge pickup). By adding the pre, I can add as much bass or treble to my liking and the Z mode switch gives me 3 different midrange settings depending on how much I need to cut through the mix. I normally keep it in the middle position.

jpeeze, my bass is a Skyline which is still better than American Fenders, in my honest opinion. Fender doesn't even come close to the USA Laklands!

DW, u makin me kinda mad for passing up that used Lakland Skyline i came across used for a good price a while. lol.

But yeah, in my opinion (i did put some significant playing time on my cousins Lakland) they are better than the Fenders.

If I see one available this summer in the same price range, I'm definitely grabbing it! Fender looks like it stepped up it's game with the new American Deluxe line though! We'll see!

Well, here it is! (http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0194690705)  I like the 70's features, but miss the original American Deluxe body shape.  It looks a lot the Custom Classic Jazz.  Too bad they didn't do an American Deluxe Precisicn V though.  And even at that, the 4-string P-5 now has a J pick up at the bridge rather than a humbucker....a step backwards IMO.

Well, there is a MIA Dlx that is more standard and then this jewel!  Love the BnB and  the 4+1.  The price is up there though for me.  That's getting around new Sadowsky Metro territory; which I guess makes sense.  That looks sweet!

As far as B strings, just gonna echo the right strings and good professional setup.  I got a Squier Affinity V with a killer B string.  Elderly Instruments did a killer setup (no sharp or high frets) and the D'Addarios fit it nicely.  They also will send instruments back if they're whack in any way.

I rocked it a number of times at church and everybody was digging the "Fender".

Wow! Fender finally flattened out their necks!! And they added a 'true' active bypass switch which I think should be standard on all active/passive basses! True, the prices are now in Sadowsky territory but it seems they finally figured out how to compete with the boutique market. I'd like to know what the average weights are. I love my Laklands but I'd love to give these new basses a try!

i have a 97 fender jazz deluxe american 5 with noiseless pickups and i tune it a 1/2 step down. to me my B isn't impressive in either tunning. I've own a Musicman stingray 5 and that B string had a heavy punch and my friends ibenez B strings sounds better than my fender. But the new ones might be different. my bass is my 3rd arm so i'm cool.

The funny thing is that the Sting Ray also uses a 34" scale.  It just goes to show you that there are other factors that influence the tone/feel of a B string than just the scale leangth.  I've even heard that there are some 35" scale fives that don't sound any better than an average 34" bass.

I agree with this. 35" scale just affords a 'tighter feeling' B string more so than a bass with 34" scale. Good sounding B strings are more attributed to a good string, proper nut cut, proper string winding/angle & proper neck setup.

Fender Jazz 5. Trying to get some compare opinions first. Thanks !!
I bought a 07 that had the SCN's in it and I didn't care for them at all so I went with Nordstrands and didn't care for those either, so I actually ended up putting a pair of 95 MIA 5 string pickups ( i.e. John shur pickups) in it along with the FMEQ 1 Preamp from that same bass and turned out to be a great souding bass

What are all the possible arrangements for a 5 string?

5 inline
4+1
3+2
2+3
1+4
5 inline but the tuners are on the opposite side?

Also does anyone make a 1+4? or a 2+3?

Yeah, there's a ton of 3+2 headstocks.  I've owned Alembic, Roscoe, Ken Smith, and Lakland 3+2 headstock designs.  I think Yamaha and Ibanez are also 3+2.

There's just not a lot of 2+3.  The only 2+3 I recall seeing before I ordered mine was MTD 535.

well not really, however I rewired it the way it should've been ( @ least to me !) in the 1st place, and now I can play the bass in Passive mode ( which is most of the time)and use my tonal controls while the bass is in passive or active mode
