Yeah, I saw that and corrected it. I don't want to confuse people and make them think that I'm going to the other side. ;D No "picks" for me.
Title: Bass build Update
Post by: ddwilkins on April 04, 2010, 06:04:27 PM
The neck should be finished within a week. Since I received my ash body on Friday, I went ahead and started gluing and cutting the body wings.

As I slept last night, I was actually thinking about my next build. For some odd reason all I could see was a 5 string J bass with an amboyna burl top with gold hardware. Guess I need to start looking for the top.

Sorry for the late response, haven't had time to check the forums much lately but I was serious tho doc!  It looks like you're taking your time and trying to build a quality instrument.  If you can do the same thing backwards (well, mirrored) I'd be more than happy to field test the brand.  :)

More than likely, D'Addarios. I've tried plenty of strings, but I always end up playing this brand more than others. All my basses have them. I may give some Smith's a run first though.

He's not discussing the cost to make it.  From a business perspective it wouldn't make sense for him to.

Man, I'm tired of this NC weather. I actually had good weather on Saturday, but my wife has been out of town at a convention all weekend, so I've been keeping the boys. I want to do something this week and will.

Body wings are now glued on. Next I'll start shaping the neck, roundover, and body contours. Then I'll do control and pickup cavities then sanding.

Just for the bottom portion. The top was already glued on. I just hope it works. Plus, with everything planed level, I didn't need so many clamps and these woods are thick enough that they aren't going to bow while applying the pressure.

For those who are waiting on the completion of this project, you are not alone. I'm ready myself. Right now, its been to hot to get outside and doing some more sanding. So, I'm waiting for the weather to be on my side right now. I did mark up the places to route for the pickups. I'll probably get those done when I get back from out of town next week. I've decided that I'm going to finish this baby with a couple of coats of tru oil, buff out, then let it shine. I don't think I'm going to stain the red wood.

Ultralites will be in today or tomorrow. I'm back from vacation, so I'm going to sand this week, and hopefully get prepared to grain fill this weekend. It depends on the weather. If its hot, I'm not doing anything!!! ;D

No it isn't done. My funding source for this project was cut down last month. On projects like this, I don't like to touch my regular monthly budget. So, since I'm no longer playing at a ministry, I don't have the extra funds for it. All that's left though is to order electronics and install them.
