......seriously. The Venus Flytraps I ordered a couple weeks ago finally arrived. Five of 'em. I figure it'll be good educational experience for my boys. Could also be the basis for Drew's 8th grade science fair project.
Oh, and did I ever mention how much I despise flies?
I can see it now.....chillin' out on the deck, barbecue fork in one hand, a cold Mike's in the other, and my flytraps guarding the perimeter.
Anybody else ever try to grow carnivorous plants?

I had a Venus Fly Trap, and another one, I can't think of the name. It had liquid in it.
-
No, I never have... but I sure am intrigued now...
-
uh.....
"feed me seymour?"

"feed me seymour?"
LOL! That reminds me of a very hilarious (but you had to be there) story.
When I was in high school, we had a gospel choir. We sang "Bread of Heaven" in the choir, and the bridge goes "feeeeeeed me, feeeeeed me, feeeeeeed me, feeed meee-eeeee, feed me till I want no more!" So in rehearsal, each time the choir would sing "feeeeeeed me" one of the guys used to always do "feed me, Seymour" in that same voice from Little Shop of Horrors. Anyone who heard it would crack up and the director never knew what we were doing or what we were laughing at.
So one day, someone dares him to do it in the microphone while we were out singing at some community event at the football field. This idiot actually sings IN THE MICROPHONE "feed me Seymour" in that stupid voice... LOL!!! I gotta catch him on FB and see if he remembers that! LOL
:D :D :D :D

Pitcher plant. Had one of them, too. My hatred of flies knows no bounds.

Cool! What site did you order them from?

MyCarnivore.com. It has content more appropriate for kids, so I bookmarked it for them to be able to read up on care instructions.

So, have u ever been bit by ur plant? I bet that would hurt a lot.

Yes. Actually it sorta tickles.

I had a venus fly try, when I stayed in my dorm. But the place did not have bugs :( so it died ..... I might have to get another one because every now and then I get these HUGE Cluster flies.
-
1. What the heck is a cluster fly?
2. So these plants will only eat insects? Like, I know they like eating insects, but there's no other kind of food/water combo that will keep them alive? If that's the case, I guess there's no point in me getting one. I don't do insects. Under any circumstances.
3. I am SO about to go to that website! LOL

Okay so I just finished reading some stuff on that site.
God is just way more amazing than my mind can comprehend.

1. What the heck is a cluster fly?
Cluster flies are about the same size, or slightly larger than houseflies (about 8mm, or 1/3 of an inch long), and are dark gray to black. The adult flies are non-biting and rarely cause any damage, except for spotting of walls and windows from defecation and regurgitation. During late summer or early fall, as adults they seek outdoor locations to over winter, often hollow trees, out buildings or sheds. They become a nuisance when they attempt to enter warm buildings to over winter; most cluster flies over wintering in heated buildings eventually die. They tend to cluster on the exterior walls of buildings, hence their name.

I've never seen a place with as many flies as Detroit.
I've never seen a place with as many mosquitoes as Korea.
This place, where I am now, has a lot of spiders. We had one get in the house, a little over a week ago, that was nearly the size of my hand--and it wasn't a skinny, Daddylongleg spider! It was fat! My wife freaked out! Now, I know why our cable guy didn't want to go under our house.
When I went under there, during the winter, while I was running new power lines for our fireplace lights, there were a lot of huge dead spiders down there. This is probably the same reason why we have little snakes and frogs living next to our house.

Sweet.

You should send the wifey to that website. The kids would probably get a kick out of raising a few of those plants, and the grown-ups would enjoy the benefits of having fewer insects. And of course it's all a great learning experience. I tell you, I'm grown and that website was super-cool to me!! LOL

Try Minnesota, near the Twin cities! I went there for a two-week training about 10 years ago. It was summertime, and those flies were out in full force. Those things would just sit on the window panes and look at you, waiting for you to come outside so that they could pester you! I've never seen so many flies in my life, before or since.

You know what, now that you said it, I think I heard about that.
Someone was telling me of a place where the flies would come at you, especially if you had brightly colored clothes.
Here, at least in the country, we seem to have a problem with gnats. These things are vicious! If I go out to cut my grass, or do any kind of yard work, these things are there to fly into the corners of my eyes and into my ears! I have to wear my goggles and hearing protection to feel comfortable!....but then I look like a dork....

I read that you can actually feed the plant small pieces of meat in lieu of insects.
I was actually reading about these plants in a catalog the other day. I may make the investment in the future.

I need one of them bad boys right now, there's a fly tormenting me...

Ok, summer's here. The kids are running in and out of the house constantly. Flies seem to follow them (come to think of it, they do get pretty rank after playing for a while :D ). I'm buying (at least) one of those joints. This ought to be fun!

Dude, I'm so buying a venus...
One day, I'll explain to you why and what it represents to me, but I just wanted to share my gratitude for introducing me to mycarnivore.com. Over the weekend, I taught at a two-day Leadership Summit. It wasn't in my presentation, notes, or outline, but somehow I ended up referring to the four plants that I learned about on the website (as a result of this thread). It provided great support for my point about how God cares about the details (I was teaching about excellence in ministry). In fact, we ended up saying "God cares about the details" all throughout the weekend. At the end, someone asked me for the name of the website again.
It just amazes me that God created plants like this. What a detail-oriented God.
