Thank You!!
For instance, If he compliments your feet why not say "Thank You" instead of saying:
"I need to put lotion on them"
"I need a pedicure"
"They prolly stink cause they sweaty"
If a man says, You have some pretty legs. Why not say "Thank You" instead of Saying:
"Puh-lease! They all scared up from falling of my skates when I was little"
"No I dont, They ugly"
"My knees are black. You see how black my knees are? Thats from battling my brother, when we use to break dance.
If a man says that you are pretty, why not say "Thank You" instead of saying:
"My skin is ugly/horrible"
"Do you see how big my nose/forehead/lips/eye/ears/front tooth is?"
"Puh-lease!! I have to scrub my face every night with black soap and bleach".
"Im really not pretty, but thanks for the compliment anyway"
If a Guy says "You have a beautiful smile, why not smile and say "Thank You" instead of Saying
"CHILD, BOO! (takes teeth out of her mouth and hold them in the air) Deez ah dem-chures"
If the guy is trying to be nice or sincere, why throw out such spoilers?

LOL! You forgot to add
If a guy says your hair looks nice don't say,
"Thanks, but its not mine"
Or
"Dis weave"
Also if someone compliments your outfit or shoes don't say
"Oh I got dis on sale for $9.99 can u believe it?"
I've gotten better, but for some reason I have a hard time responding to compliments lol. I don't say what's listed above, but I always pause for some reason or do this stupid giggle...ugh lol. Tomorrow, Lord willing lol, I'll just simply say "thank you"
Thanks for reminding me!

I'm gonna let you all have this insight for free.
Many times, women don't know how to receive a compliment especially when they see how flawed they are. I struggled with this when dealing with how God sees me. My flaws are ever before me reminding me of how unworthy and imperfect I am, but yet God sees the beauty of who he made me to be and who I am becoming in Him.
The other thing, is that many women don't trust compliments. In other words, they are unsure if you're saying it because you really honestly believe it, or if there's another agenda or motive. There's a lot that plays into why some feel that way.
Then there's the never ending comparison to what is beautiful in our eyes, or what the majority of society deems beautiful. A lot of us don't measure up to that, so when you pay a compliment, the thought is, you just haven't seen what's out there, lol.
Women are under constant pressure about how they look, where men basically get away with a lot more. I just saw an overweight LGMer post a FB status hating on overweight women, and I was thinking to myself, "You got a whole heck of a lot of nerve!" LOL! Anyway, those are just some ideas from my own personal experience and observations of many women that are close to me.
Oh yeah, and another final reason is fear of being viewed as conceited or whatever. Some were never taught how to receive a compliment and celebrate themselves. You can still be humble and do that...

This
We talked about this a lot in classes. Society has one expectation (that I don't believe you can ever fully achieve) and then we have our own expectation. The media, which I harp about a lot, plays a very damaging role in this.
-
Yea, the media...but also interactions with others. Always being over looked for other girls, being the not-so-cute one in the group of friends, being teased by guys (and girls in some cases) about their looks or clothes, lack of validation at home, being the not-so-cute one in the family, etc. I'm sure the list goes on and on for many women.
SN: Imagine the frustration a woman in this situation has when this (embarassing) situation is brought to light and everybody around responds with, "Well, you need to be happy with who you are," then they go on with the rest of their lives. Yet I'm not totally convinced that men and women are all THAT different so I'm sure some guys can relate.
-
LOL@Wolfie! See! I'm not even in front of u and still did the dumb giggle just reading it smh...*sigh* I'm so lame...
I don't think its low self esteem for everybody. I think sometimes people walk out the house not expecting to be noticed and are caught by surprise when they are...Lol! Lemme stop...idk why they do it lol. I think I giggle because I'm kind of shy *shrug*

Cosign on everything Nessa said.

Wow nicely said Nessa...soooo true.
Co to the sign!!

I agree Koda.

B-dubs and K-dizzle have the most awesome pair of cheeks I have seen on a woman. I am a highly affectionate person so it would be dangerous for me to meet them in real life cuz I would want to keep kissing them.
**Contented sigh**

Some women can take a compliment.
I always say thank you, that's sweet of you and leave it at that.
But men sometime go on and on...after you say thank you and that's annoying.
How many times and ways can you say thanks?lol
-
Their responses are due to low self-esteem.
I doubt thaty seriously. I red what Nessa said, and I agree 100%. I never knew how to take a compliment in the past because at a younger age I struggled with low self esteem. I was always the biggest, tallest, and -est of anything else you name. Kids are cruel, so what was fat to them in High school, is a thick brick house in my adult life. Having short hair was always talked about in high school, but now, people be on my hair like crazy...
So when I became of age, and fellas would compliment me, I didnt know how to take it... "Girl you have beautiful legs mmm mmm mmmmmm" but in high school "You got big ole manly muscly legs... ugh" I can leg press 500 pounds easily. I took kick boxing, and modern dance, so I have VERY athletic legs, and I always thought they were ugly... Now I am a bit older, and I love my legs, so I now Know how to take that compliment... :)
My best friend and I were at Old Navy a couple weekends ago, and she and I were talking about how when your hair needs to be done, thats usually when people compliment it the most... and about ten minutes later we went to the Foor Locker and this dude complimented her hair, and she chuckled... He said, "Did I say something funny?" and she said "No, my friend and I were just talking about my hair, and its funny you mention that it looks nice, cause I think it needs to be done..." She told him out whole convo.
She does NOT have low self esteem. I mean, men here at work tell me that they like my toe polish, and I have said "Aw, and I just chipped the paint..." or something to that effect, without realizing that its a compliment, and not say thank you. I dont have an issue with my self esteem (as an adult), more so, I definitely dont have an issue with my appearance.
-

Who was it? C'mon, pu 'em on blast.
As for the compliments, in a past relationship I got the constant "no I'm not" when I gave compliments to the point I just stopped giving them because it became frustrating. Then I got the old "you never compliment me." A brotha can't win. I will give a compliment when it is duly warranted. I once even complimented Taj from the R&B group SWV on how beautiful her skin was when I met her a few years back when her and Eddie George were just dating. I mean this woman has some of the clearest, most beautiful dark skin I've ever seen and she was not wearing any makeup. She was shocked, laughed, and said thank you. I also stressed that I was not hitting on her, I was just giving her a compliment.
-
I always say Thank You.

Interesting discussion! interesting!

Hi buddy!!!

Hi buddy!!!
Hey!!! LOL!
this thread was nice. I had to check myself. and i'll have to agree with Koda... sometime we (women) make those excuses, "I have a big nose and you think I'M pretty?" ME? ya know... but to me it is self esteem... but i guess the complimentee would have to evluate herself and see why she cant just say thank you. either it's a self esteem issue or the chick is like seriously vain! like the chick has one freakin pimple and when dude says, "you've got nice skin" she's like... ugh... this pimple is killin my look! girl please! ONE freakin pimple ain neva stopped a man from hollerin! loll
bad english... bad!

Im with Koda. because it is the same thing for a guy when he receives a compliment. If you shrug off a compliment, you rob yourself of the compliment being given, and you rob the other person being able to give the compliment they intended. The most healthy response, as 3rd put it, is to just say "THank you"

I've heard so many people say that. :D

First question: Ladies if a woman said the same compliment concerning your toe nail polish to you how would you respond?
My guess is you would say the same thing. Right? Then you two would have a conversation about the virtues of various types of nail polish and your favorite place to get your nails done ... and some other stuff.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that is it possible that the compliment leads to an actual conversation.
*i'm going to have to kill this snake ... its making too much noise*

Yeah, you have a point.
IRT the snake: You are making me shudder and I'm miles away. I would NOT be able to enter the house again until Mr. Serpent was dead...

Note: I haven't read all comments. Maybe some women are trying to be humble.

Thats the truth! BUT the same thing goes for men. Women want a man with a great body just like men want a women who is physically fit.
