Title: MTD Z6
Post by: twest45 on June 13, 2010, 09:58:37 PM
About two weeks ago I had a modded Z5.  I liked the tone but I'm a 6-string guy so I traded for a Z6.  I took all the original electronics out and tossed them in the garbage and installed a Bart pre and Bart split coil pickups.  I love the tone.  Tell me what you guys think.  I think I finally found something to replace my Yamaha TRB6.  Well, maybe!!!!

I love the tone, dead strings and all.  Lot of modded MTD Z basses popping up these days.  This sounds one of the best.

Nice Upgrade. Who's singing that version of Blessed the Lord in the beginning?

That is Isaiah D. Thomas and EOP, off his latest cd "The Greatest". He's the original composer of the song, but I think his first cd was a regional release in the MD/DC/VA area. I still like the original better than Byron Cage's remixes (both of them lol).

So, people have been modding the Z6's. I played one at Washington Music Center a few weeks ago...and as much as I loved the look and feel...the electronics simply sucked imho. Then I hear clips like this one and I'm like "what in the world is different?". Now I know...great sound, great clip....

Sounds great to me!!  So, how does it compare to the Yamaha? (as far as feel and overall tonal quality)

The Z6 has a little more high-end.  The Yamaha has that punch that I love in the mid range.  They really sound kinda a similar.  I do love the Yamaha's 19mm string spacing more than the Z6's 18mm.  The Z6 is waaayyyy lighter!!!

everyone says the MTD Kingston series are excellent basses, all but the electronics. I havent modded mine yet, as I am satisfied with it as is, however I wanna eventually swap out because Im not always playing through  my own rig, so I want a bit more control. But that may wait until I mod my other MTD.

But indeed those are sweet basses. I still keep my eyes out for a good deal just in case I feel like bringing home another one.

This is Isaiah D. Thomas's version.  Morgan Turner is playing bass.  You need to hear the whole song.  Dude is killing!  I'm not 100% sure on this album but he plays a Roscoe.

6stringapprentice has the same bass but he has Ken Smith pickups and an Aguilar pre amp.  I almost bought a pair of Ken smith pups to go with my Bart pre.  Howere, on one of the pickups, one of the coilds was bad.  So if I would have installed them, on the bad pick up I wouldn't be able to do any coil switching.

I honestly didnt know that was him on that CD.  Like the first few songs I was like danngggggg.  Yep after you hear his version (the original anyway) Byron Cage's sounds...aight  :D :D

keep checking out the classifieds on talkbass.com and the used gear section on GC's website. I paid $700 for my 6 string. deals pop up all the time.

If you are patient, you can probably find a better deal, or one with mods that you are looking for, but...

Guitar Center in Hallandale Florida has a KZ5 in natural gloss with a rosewood fingerboard for $649.99.

I've stopped looking, but for nearly a year, $600- $900 was what I typically saw these going for used.  Even on Ebay.

Good Luck.
