Since the NFL got one, the NBA getting one.....LOL!
Once again I wanna say congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers for another title, 2nd title in a row and give props to Celtics for fighting hard!!
So now it's the offseason and several issues are at play including the following:
-Was this the final run of the "Big 3" in Boston?
-Is Doc Rivers coming back next year?
-What will Phil Jackson do? Go for a 3 peat, retire or coach another team?
-Will Lakers resign Derek Fisher? Will Lakers do any improvement with the team?
-Who will coach Cleveland Cavaliers?
-Will Oklahoma City Thunder become possible title contender in next 2-3 years?
And last but not least......
Where will Lebron James play?
Let's weigh in on the offseason. There are more stories also than the ones I listed (Phoenix Suns, Dwayne Wade, Amare, Bosh, Nets, etc.)
-
Amare is not re-signing with the Suns. I read that the other day.

Don't think Doc Rivers will be back.
The Big 3 will give it one more shot.
Phil will go for the 3 peat
Fisher will probably come off the bench for the Lakers next year, if not, he'll retire
Byron Scott will coach the Cavs
And the Thunder have a good shot to contend, if none of this years free agents go to the west. (I think LBJ will need to go to the west to win a title)
Does this championship make Kobe the greatest Laker ever?

Does this championship make Kobe the greatest Laker ever?
In my mind, and in the minds of MANY Lakers fans, Magic Johnson will always be the greatest Laker of All-Time.
I think Magic, as celebrated as he is, is still underrated. He'd be an All-Star at all 5 positions.

What about Jerry West? :)
But yeah Magic is "The Laker"

I do agree with the last statement; but there is something about a guy who can beat you 5-6 different ways on the court. I'm still on the fence about it. I just think Kobe's skill set far exceeds Magic's. (IMO)
Shooting - Kobe
Court Vision - Magic
Passing - Magic
Athletisism - Kobe
Post Game - Tie
Defense - Kobe
Rebounding - Tie
Clutch - Kobe (slightly)

If I had a vote, it would be for Magic. Kobe is the best scorer in Laker history (or will be at some point). But, Magic made "Showtime" what it was. His versatility was unmatched. He made his entire team better and was so unselfish. Yet, he knew when to take over a game when he neeed to. I've always been a Laker-hater, but I know greatness when I see it.

NOBODY's skill set "far exceeds" Magic Johnson's. Nobody. Not Michael Jordan. Not Oscar Robertson. And definitely not Kobe Bryant.
Not sure how you could say that, unless you didn't really watch Magic. There's no other way you could say that.

6'9"(or so), and could play EVERY position on the floor WELL. Skill set?

Amare is not re-signing with the Suns. I read that the other day.
I co-sign, I just dont think he is that great and if he goes to a slow paced team his numbers will go down.. Also because Nash wont be his point guard..

I co-sign this as well James will need to go west to get ring or team up with Wade or bosh to get it.
The big 3 will NOT be together, allen is going somewhere he doesnt have to play a lot of minute but make the money and get a ring. Umm, Lakers or thunder interesting ..
What about Jerry West? :)
But yeah Magic is "The Laker"
Kobe is great, you cant compare magic vs kobe due to the fact the they are two different players in two different leagues... players now are mush more quickier than back then and centers now a days can shoot 3's back then they stayed around the rim.. so of course when he player center back then he couldn't be stopped... lol
Phil will go for the 3 peat
Yes he will
Byron Scott will coach the Cavs
James needs to leave quickly with the coach coming like scott... lol
How about Shaq going back to Cali. being a back up to bynum will ensure a greater chance at another ring with two very good centers.. They still need to fix the bench a little but not by much.

What I think hurts Kobe in any conversation (compared with Mike or Magic) is his image. For the most part everybody loves Mike and Magic but with Kobe either people really love him or people really hate him. For some he comes off as arrogant. I was talking to one of my friends last night/this morning and she feels like Kobe tried to run everyone away after the first 3 peat. Some think that Lakers could have had a 4 or even 5 peat, especially when they had Malone and Payton.
At the end of the day, no one will ever surpass MJ. Different era of basketball and it's much harder to win a title in this era than it was in the previous eras. At the end of the day, Kobe's image hurts him more than anything.
But honestly, this championship, it didn't seem like it had as much excitement as the one last year. Maybe because this one was the hardest to get.

I watched plenty of Magic. And maybe I used the wrong word by saying (far) as in out of his league. I'm saying that Kobe has advanced his game to a level, where he is almost unstoppable. I know some or most won't agree with me; but that's the good thing about the debate.
-

This is for the most part true. Lemme just throw in a nice little euphamism for those us who trying to stay heaven-bound correct ;D ;D. I'll just say that I'm not fond of the one Kobe Bean Bryant. ::) ::)

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. With a scorer, if he's not careful the offense will turn into 1 guy taking fadeaways and circus shots, and the other 4 guys standing around hoping he makes them. :D
I got the sense that, at times, that's what happened to the Lakers offense. Fortunately for the Lakers Kobe is so incredibly good that his near-impossible (for anybody else) shots were enough to win a championship. There was a stretch in game 5 where Kobe played like an NBA Jam character who caught fire. :D
With Magic Johnson you have a guy who can't score like Kobe (few can), but because he's probably the best passer the league has seen, he keeps the entire offense running like a well-oiled machine. He made IMPOSSIBLE passes and gave guys layups and easy jumpers. The Showtime Lakers are known for being a great offense primarily because they had Magic Johnson.
...at the same time if you had to pick one guy to make a shot to win it all, it's Kobe. Personally I'd take Magic for the whole game, but if I need the game-winning shot, I'm taking Kobe 9 times out of 10.
I can definitely see someone picking Kobe over Magic.

The best player argument is a hard one when judging a team sport. If this was track, golf or swimming it would be easier. In a team sport, the best player usually has to sacrifice individual statistics, usually shot attempts, to win. Consequently, I place more weight on championships won than statistics. Its very difficult to compare eras. For example, in Magic's era, the rules were, IMO, tougher and free agency was not as wild as it is now. If I had to choose, I would give Magic the slight edge over Kobe. However, in Kobe's defence, Magic played with two other hall of famers that were able to compliment his passing game. Kobe maybe the only hall of famer on his team.

Izzo turns down the Cavs job. Can the Cavs land a big name coach with all of the uncertainty surrounding LeBron? Will the Cavs be better off waiting until the free-agent picture is more clear?
-

Answer to both questions are NO. No big name coach wants to go there not knowing Lebron's status. And the Cavs need to hire a coach now (before the draft) so he can have the opportunity to put a team together that fits his style.
-
I'm hearing Byron Scott is favorite to coach Cavs. Personally I'd rather see him or Magic Johnson take over Lakers once Jackson hangs it up for good.
-
I think Byron Scott is a good coach. He got a bum deal in NO, IMO.

Yes, because of salary cap issues plus there are so many who believe that the NBA is fixed.

Word on the street has it that Phil Jackson is leaning towards retirement. Yet at the same time, the thought of going for a 4th 3peat also intices him.
What do you think he will do?
Personally I think he should try for the 3peat and then retire.

The only reason I'd think he would retire is if he does 3-peat, then he will be enticed by the idea of a 4-peat and so on...
Also, about Kobe's persona, many people perceived MJ as arrogant also...but for some reason, I'd take MJ's personality over Kobe's any day BTJM

Several NBA Execs think Lebron will be a Chicago Bull (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/its-not-just-you-nba-executives-thing-lebron-will-be-a-bull-too.php)
"The executive, who did not want to be identified discussing a player who is not yet a free agent, said he had gathered from discussions with his fellow N.B.A. executives that James was strongly leaning toward joining the Bulls in tandem with another free agent, Chris Bosh of the Toronto Raptors.
"I think it's a done deal," the executive said.... "

oooooooooooo Chevonee. Yeah I heard about it on sport talk radio, however on the sports networks I haven't hardly heard a peep. It's probably real but for some reason the media as a whole is not touching it.

I'm putting my Holy Ghost money on Chi-town baby. LeBron know that he can't step up in there with number "23". That's why he changed his number. Bulls no doubt. Only question is who goes with him.

Amar'e to the Knicks (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/07/amare-stoudemire-icon-of-the-new-york-reclamation.php)
This signing alone means absolutely nothing for the Knicks. Amar'e alone won't make them a playoff contender. He's good bait for the big Free Agents out there though.

Very good duo but I'm wondering how they will fill out the rest of their roster. Lebron has been left in the cold.

I wouldn't quite say that. He has the basketball world at his fingertips. He could sign with Miami, albeit for less money than he could get elsewhere. But, I doubt that's the way he's going to go. I'm sure they all discussed it at some point.

How about LeBron making his announcement tomorrow in an hour long program on ESPN (http://ESPN's Chris Broussard and Shelly Smith both are hearing the announcement will come later today (both getting it from separate sources).)?
What an ego. ::)

i am really disappointed in this year's free agency. For all the hype, there really haven't been any major shake-ups. I'm convinced that most of these guys were trying to get a major payday from their own teams before the new CBA kicks in. I wanted to see all the top players move teams. :-\

He can't wear the number 23 in Chi town anyway, since it is retired. They word on the street is that Chi Town sent him the #1's which were made in 1984 and said can you fill these shoes. Also sent him the Ring box (or seven rings boxes) and said can you bring the seventh home to us.

Okay, so as a resident Detroit Pistons fan here on LGM, I went to the meeting to discuss their off-season moves during this epic NBA Free Agent period.
Why was I the only one there?

This better be something very shocking and suprising to have a whole show for 1 hour. I mean it better have the same feeling when Lakers won title in game 7.
-
Well Miami it is! He needed all this just to indicate what has been basically confirmed all day?....SMH!!!!
-
Miami Heat! Can you say RINGS!!!! & Dream Team!
-
I've been in ATL for about 8 years now and have been to 1 hawks game. After the annoucement, I had my son go check online for when the heat are coming to ATL ;D ;D ;D we goin baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miami Heat! Can you say RINGS!!!! & Dream Team!
I still think my Lakers will 3 peat...JMT!!!

Depending on what else Miami does that 3 peat is HIGHLY questionable.
SN: I feel so bad for Cleveland but think some of the fans and owner are handling it very immature.

Some people forget it's just a GAME, a stupid game!
-
SN: I feel so bad for Cleveland but think some of the fans and owner are handling it very immature.
The Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert seems to have made this very personal.
Some of his quotes:
- "People have covered up for (James) for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."
- "He quit," Gilbert said. "Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar."
- Gilbert also said he believes James quit on the Cavs in Game 6 of their series in 2009 against Orlando. "Go back and look at the tape," he said. "How many shots did he take?"
- "We will win a championship before (the Heat) do."
- To the fans he said: "You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal."
- "I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"
Dan sounds like a phony, considering he likely would have given his firstborn to get Lebron to stay.
However he also said Lebron didn't return a single call or text, and let the Cavs know RIGHT before he made the announcement...through one of his handlers. That's not cool.
-
I still think my Lakers will 3 peat...JMT!!!
This year yes after this year NO.. heat will win a few.. I will not say it is not possible for them to win this year but it depends on who else they get on the rooster, and you know a lot of players will be looking to go down there to play with them to get a ring... I wouldn't be shocked if Shaq came back, or AI and T-Mac comes down there just to get there ring they both would would do it.. The only team that would give them a battle would be the Lakers... Boston would have no hope.. Like I said a few years ago when boston came together they won the first one but if they didnt repent it was over... and it now has come hahahaha
Now what the owner said about lebron is crazy I really dont like him that much compared to Wade and bosh, Kobe but dang ripping him like that is crazy and all you did was add to your beat down when they come to town... Now if he stayed for the money everybody would have something to say about that but he decided to get some rings and everyone is mad, upset and lost there mind, burning jerseys like he is president lol Like LL said its a game yes money will be lost for him leaving but come on... ;D ;D
Oh, by the way Lakers and Heat are my two teams so this will be crazy since L.a added blake too hahaha Kobe is crying at this moment like NOOOOOOO lebron and wade with bosh at the same time....
Side note: I would like to see shaq go back to L.A not as a starter but to back bynum.. That would be interesting cause he knows the system and that would really make it hard on other teams....
-
Lebron should have at least talked with owner.
-
The same owner that fired the current Coach of the Year? Bump him!
-
When last has one team had two of the three best players in the league?
By the time Kobe reached best player in the league status Shaq wasn't a top 3 player anymore.
-
I don't know anything about all this basketball stuff... but I know my FB was lit up last night with all my NY friends appearing to be extremely angry that Lebron didn't choose the Knicks. I thought it was so funny! LOL
-
The NBA want be able to help the Laker's Now!!
Miami, the new king on the block! Everyone is going to want to sign with the heat. Like the old MJ and the Bulls days.
-
Will Miami do like Boston/ Win the NBA title the 1st year with there Big 3?
-
I think there is a very, very good chance. I think many good role players will take less money to sign with them.
-
I don't know anything about the rest of the supporting cast, so the jury's out for me.
-

That, plus you have to factor in the possibility of injuries.
-
I think there is a very, very good chance. I think many good role players will take less money to sign with them.
That's the key.
If they get good role players, they can win this upcoming season. The Lakers didn't win because of Kobe & Pau alone. They needed Artest and Fisher and Odom and even a banged up Bynum.
Even with a slightly below average cast, this team should be a handful.
-

That's funny because Knicks never had a chance with Lebron.
Some say that the day when Bosh and Wade decided to join forces was the day Lebron made the decision to go to the Heat. Some even say that the decision was in the making a few years ago.
Will Miami do like Boston/ Win the NBA title the 1st year with there Big 3?
Good question. Idk but I think it's highly possible. My gut feeling still believes (unless the bench is awful again, they don't get Derek Fisher or something else dramatic happens) that Lakers will get the 3 peat. However that 3 peat, to me is in question.
-
They may win some championships but if they don't it won't surprise me. Deep down I don't think it's going to work. There are a lot of tangibles...role players, coaching, etc. Who is the coach??? That makes a difference.
In the 90s at UNC, we had Wallace, Jamison, Stackhouse and Carter all on the same team one year. What did we win? I know that college is totally different. However, superstars don't always = championships.
Lebron should have called the owner and told him he wasn't staying with Cleveland. That's professional. Obviously, Gilbert is not being professional.
-
Lebron and Owner acted unprofessional.
-
It's easier to gauge the character of a person when they are presented with adversity. The "hall of fame of faith" (Hebrews 11) is filled with people who, when faced with adversity, showed the true nature of their belief and character.
The owner of Cavaliers seemed to show his true nature as one considers his rant. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Money is indeed the root of all evil and he probably is more upset at how much money is leaving Cleveland rather than the person.
LeBron showed some of his character when he didn't shake hands of the victors a couple of years ago. Thank goodness he learned from that and took it like a man this year. A great winner should know how to lose as well.
I'm going to enjoy watching them play next year, although San Antonio will remain my favorite team.
-
Go Sixers!
-
Lets go Oklahoma Thunder
-

Lebron James owes the Cavs owner nor the city anything. If anything they should be thanking God for how much money Lebron brought to that city. Obviously the Cavs owner is a big jerk & after this show of lack of appreciation to the man that brought him in millions & millions of dollars, I am glad he got out of dodge. Lebron did whats best for Lebron, even if they never win a Championship, he did whats best for him. When a brotha does his thing his own way, white folks just loose there mind as if he owed him a phone call, that man is a joke. Now, the Cavaliers will never get a top name player, after the way he treated Lebron's departure. As a matter of fact hang on, I think the Cavs owner is trying to call me, LOL, cause thats about the quality of ball players he is going to have, for a long time. I think Lebron did it very classy. They(Chicago,Cleveland, the media), made a big hoopla out of Lebron being a free agent, Lebron just finished it, his own way & i have to applaud the brotha for that.

How did the NBA help them this year?
-
First, I am a Sixers fan...secondly, the Miami Heat is going to win quite a few titles. We forget that Lebron became famous by being like a so called Magic Johnson kind of player...I believe that Lebron is going to have fun playing with Bosh and Wade..less we forget Lebron is a pass first shoot second type of player...not particularly a player that just take over a game even though he has the ability to do so...I believe that Miami will put him a point guard, Wade at shooting guard, and bosh at power forward and then add the shooter and role players to dominate the NBA...I believe since Pat Riley is pulling the strings...its showtime in Miami...with Lebron running the guard...watch out NBA..Stay Blessed, Nate J.

With all due respect I understand what you're saying, yet I believe respect is a 2 way street. Even though Lebron really doesn't owe anything to the city except gratitude for putting his career in a very good position as his place of starting off, Lebron should have had enough decency to at least talk to the owner a month or so in advance to let him know that he was going to leave and explain. Reports also show that if Bosh was willing to go to Cavs, Lebron might have considered staying. I will agree about the owner because the way I look at it, the owner is equally responsible for creating the Lebron James that the media has come to know. I still think the whole program to announce his decision was ridiculous, even with the donation to Boys and Girls Club.

Oviously Lebron thought different. We don't know the relationship Lebron & the owner had. Lebrons actions showed how much respect he had for this owner. I don't know what kind of dialogue he & his owner had, but it must have only benefited the owner or he gave his normal song & dance to Lebron & Lebron, thought man I've heard this before. Also he couldn't have told the owner a month ago, cause his decision had not been made. But still, Lebron is his own man & he owed that owner nothing. If he(the owner) was going to trade Lebron or any other player, the Cavs organization, would not have said a word, it would have just been done. Just like at a job, when you get fired or laid off, they don't tell you two wks in advance, they just fire you. But, they expect you to give them some kind of notice. Naw, thats not how it works, when you leave you give them that same courtesy. The owner lost his cash cow & he is highly upset. They had a 7yr business relationship & it came to an end & the owner got the short end of the stick.

It would be cool if AI joined them.
...though they need defense more than offense at this point.

I would love it if AI joined them! Have you heard of any rumblings in that area?

If you google Iverson and Heat, you'll see there's a lot of speculation, but nothing substantial.
I think it's a great move. He scored 13ppg last season. He can provide scoring off the bench, and he's still available.
Oh, and his agent is Leon Rose, who is also Lebron's agent.

Man that Lakers 3peat is looking more and more questionable everyday. If its Heat-Lakers Finals its going to 7 games.

Seven games my foot! If the Heat make it to the finals, it'll be six games or less, in their favor.

no need to worry about the 2010-11 season ... depending on the labor talks!

Hear Roster so far:
Lebron James
Dwayne Wade
Chris Bosh
Mike Miller
Mario Chalmers
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Udonis Haslem
Jamaal Magloire
James Jones
Kenny Hasbrouck
Joel Anthony
Three superstars and a supporting cast that features Miller, Z, Haslem, and Chalmers.
Sounds great on paper.

I don't think the Heat will win it all this year because the Lakers are a far better team in my opinion. I think the Heat need at least one more dependable threat before they could hang wit the Lakers.

Jeff Van Gundy says the Heat will break the Bulls' record of 72 wins (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/jeff-van-gundy-says-the-heat-will-break-bulls-record-of-72-wins.php)
"I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers' 33-game [winning] streak"
"And only the Lakers have even a remote shot at beating them in a playoff series. They will never lose two games in a row this year."
"There is now no good way to defend them. They are unguardable."
Big talk!
