Is the Yamaha MM6 a good keyboard??
-
Depends;for a cheap board,a 2nd, a starter maybe. For what it costs;you could pick up a classic ,maybe even ES for the same money(used). The benefits of a pro board, expandable, better sounds ,I could go on + on.
I was really tempted to get an ES,glad I got my XS 6;paid 1600.00 used but like new.
Even the MO6,for the money is not up to snuff;heard there's key issues/breakage,etc.
Good luck/good hunting.
-
The keys are very cheap. I had one but sold it as 2 keys were broken, and I didnt think it was worth fixing.
Other things I didnt like were the limited polyphony, which means you can not layer more than 2 or 3 sounds with out notes dropping out. Also many of the sounds of the motif were left out.
Its a good board, but a motif ES6 would be a lot better
-
As one starting out, I'm looking at this thread thinking that this could be a good keyboard for me ;D
but if one starting out wanted weighted keys with a board of similar caliber, is there anything that would fit this description? (or would i have to look to the older classic boards ie roland)
-
I fiddle with one this week. The keys are not that bad as far as feel you will just need to get a gig bag and be careful. If you want weighted keys you will have to buy used or get like a casio privia. I wouldn't mind having a light weight portable 76-88 key.
-
i would get a es6
-
hey I got the roland jono stage. it is a great keyboard to get
-
the casio previa px-330 looks good.....
the Juno stage is a bit expensive for a first board ......im guessing that was directed to the one who asked about the MM6 lol
-
Question for all....
Has anyone here purchased a lower end board (when coming up) Only to
regret it months later??? (after getting better) lol
-
I bought the Roland xp10 years ago and wish I had waited and got the xp80 only because it had more keys and more polyphony which fit my style at the time. I used to run out of polyphony when I layered because I would play arpeggios. The xp80 had 64 I believe and the xp10 was like 28 I believe. It is still a great board though. If I understood more back then I would have gotten a keyboard with better polyphony and more sliders.
I used to have a yamaha psr series keyboard that I loved. I wouldn't mind getting one of those yamaha 88 keys portables now for the house. Yamaha portable keys sound good enough to play live
-
Learner;YEP---that's still a constant lesson,do it Right the 1 st time!!!! I wouldn't drop 20 big on a new Hammond without playing a few yrs,but the dif btwn 600-1,0000 for an "entry" vs 2-3 k for the whole ball of wax;well it's almost a "foolish"economy.
Buy a Yamaha ES seris for say 600,use it few years, and turn and sell it for close to what you paid-since it is still upgradeable vs. an entry board;which will usually NOT be upgradeable.Few years down road,"entry" level boards might have MORE stuff and cheaper!
-
When I wrote my reply I thought you were talking about the MO6. As for the MM6, I wouldnt even consider buying one. if you can, get a pro quality board, even if its used. You wont regret it.
-
Docjohn, you mean like the S90es? That one looks good for me

(or One slider.....for the master volume lol)

I hope they fixed that key issue the keys can get stuck at times on the s90. The entire keyboard keys were replace on our s90 at church.

It would be best if you tell us what you're looking for in a keyboard, first....
People could be suggesting keyboards that might have a whole bunch of "extras" that you won't even use...(made that mistake, before)
-
No,Learner,Yamaha started with the Motif, then the Motif ES 61;76,or 88 keys now the Motif XS.The mo 6;8,MM seris are a few years old.The one you referenced is more of a stage piano, again not a bad choice-but still not as upgradeble.
Best bet stay with the Motif ES 6,7,8 depending on # keys you need. After couple years, better understanding of what you really need
-
Doc john, What do you mean by upgradeable? Your saying the keyboard itself it can be upgraded?

I'm looking for a board that has a good number of synths. After using FL studio for a few years and using synths, i fell in love wit using them to create. ;D
also, I grew up with a piano in my house so I got to have the weighted keys
-
Yamaha allows you to add memory, program(s),and other 2nd+3rd party products.Check www.motifator.com (http://www.motifator.com) for some of their "goodies".You will see why the Motif is the better choice(imo).
The fact you want an 88 wtd board is a factor, look for a classic Motif 88 keys,I've seen them from 7-1000.
-
I was at a church last night and this guy was playing four layers on the motif 6. He had slap ex, evolve, fact sect, and rock brite. The first two were set mostly on the left hand and the other two were set for the whole board. The sound was sweet. He did some other layers. I think it's time I revisited layers in the s90 at church. :)
-
that's what sold me
-
I follow the wisdom I learned whenFIrst started playing
get the best instrument your money can buy
that may mean buying a used professional board
rather than a new cheap board.
cheap keys will come back to haunt you when you start gigging and practicing and playing hard.
you can get really good boards that are older generation and buy brains later for the latest sounds
but your keys and action are going to help your technique.s
-
I appreciate the advice, thanks a lot
I know I'm going to be playing/practicing seriously from now on,
so for me, I'll go with something a little more expensive.
Buying a used board though...... lol
are there any key things to look out for on a board before purchasing one second hand?
(Its going to be hard not to profile to guess how well they took care of their stuff lol
It sure has helped me in the past though lol )
-
I would buy new if I could. You've got to be patient though. I'm not sure I would buy used unless I tested it out. If you dint know much about keyboards I would buy new. There is the advantage of a warranty. You may want to check out American Musical Supply. I believe they still let you make payments.
-
Right now the Roland Juno Stage can be bought for less than a thousand dollars new. Musician's Friend is having a 15% off sale, and there is a $200.00 rebate on it. After those are deducted, about $985.00 is left. Not cheap but better than $1395.00.
-
Learner,you need to find a big bro near you who can help you out.I think you need to prioritize What you want/need;
a budget,and go from there.
Sounds like you want/need 88 wtd keys;either get a 88 note controller like D mentions and a brain/module probably $800 for the keys,and a new XS rack for about $1100;
a stage piano Roland RD or Yamaha $1500;
used boards-look/pray/hope!!!!
spend some time with a Musicians's friend catalog;spend some time pricing/playing!! good luck

What do you want out of a board. Do you want a board for it to last for a few yrs or do you want a board that will be for a year? Do you want a board for production, or do you want a board for stage presence? There are many factors when choosing a board like the purpose of getting the board, the feel of the board, the sounds for a board, and etc. Now if you want a cheap board for like 4 to 500 dollars then get a casio Wk series keyboard they got good sounds on the low end and it is a reasonable keyboard. now you can go on craiglist and search for keyboards or ebay. Now if I was going to get a keyboard I would look for the sounds ( piano, organ, synth, etc), the features, and flexability of the keyboard like for the stage as well as music production. Like Yamaha motif series (not the MM8 or MM6 but the real thing) roland fanthom series or juno series. I would stay away from Krog to me their sound suck bad, however each of its own. You got to make the choice that is best for you from pocket standpoint as well as playing wise because we can't make that choice you got to make the choice.
-
Thanks for the input. I'll keep all these things in mind.
I think I know what I'm going for now. (prob a motif or juno stage). I don't want to have to make another purchase in a year or two. I'll get something that will last for a few years.

good grief,a musician who Listens!!!! lol good luck

:D thanks docjohn
If it makes sense, I'll go for it (I've been watching bert smorenburg and other reviews lol)
I play other instruments too.
Ever pour your heart out and advise someone only for them to do the opposite of what you told them? ::)
When the complain to you, Its like "but bruh....I just told you last month!"
lol
