Post by: outstretchedarm on July 01, 2010, 06:59:07 PM
I composed this as part of may become an entire hip hop symphony.  Please listen and provide feedback.  Thanks.

Ok some thoughts on this project:

1) I'm having a field day exploring the whole orchestral palette lately.  My latest goal is to gain some mastery over the woodwinds section; as so many of my favorite old soul records have nice woodwinds, especially the blackxploitation records.

2) the hip hop drum beat is very simple.  I subscribe to the principle of aesthetic balance, meaning that when one area of the art gets more complicated, other areas should go more simple.  hence

3) I've got like a half a dozen of these quasi orchestral projects lying around.  I'd like to link some of them together to form honest to God movements.

Good orchestration and melodic ideas...has a minimalist feel.

IMO I think you need to have the drums up in the mix and all the way through - and more electronic beats, less orchestral percussion. It could be hip-hop with a symphonic feel, not the other way around.

Also might need to collaborate with a DJ and/or rapper to lay down some words...just IMO....
