What does it mean when you see alt next to a chord e.g. C7alt or something like that? I only understand them basically when they written as e.g. #X or bX, please somebody help .
-
It represents a Dominant "Alternate" chord, like maybe C7#9#5 or C7b9#5.
-
Thank you so much & may God bless u,
Umm, just one more question: Is there a difference between an "Altered" chord & "Alternate" chord?

\
Yes.
Altered = a chord that has been changed; a note(s) have been added, taken out, and/or raised or lowered
Alternate = a chord in place of another chord, also called a substitution

Guys you re really amazing, may the Lord enlarge your teritories
Let me spread the challenge a little bit: In my playing I have a 'bad' habit of playing-most of the time my far right finger following the melody and realise this limits me somehow. Can you guys help me improvise get out of this boundery, for example I would play TD Jakes' "Your Majesty" in Ab basically as:
F/ Db-Eb-F-Ab I
G/ Eb-F-G-Bb Wor
Ab/ Eb-Ab-C ship
Db/ Ab-Db-F you
/Bb-Eb-G
/Ab-Db-G
F/ Db-Eb-F-Ab in the
G/ Eb-F-G-Bb beauty
Ab/ Eb-Ab-C o
Bb/F-Bb-Db of
C/ Ab-C-Eb ho-
/ F-Bb-Db o
/ Eb-Ab-C ly
F/ Db-F-ab ne
G/ Eb-G-Bb e
A/ Eb-Gb-A-C e
Bb/F-Bb-Db ss
Bb/F-Bb-Db you are
C/ Eb-Ab-C Ro
D/ D-F-Ab yal
Eb/ Eb-G-Bb ty
Eb/ Eb-G-Bb So
F/ Eb-G-Ab-C I
A/Eb-Gb-A-C
Bb/ F-Bb-Db Crown you
C/ Eb-Ab-C King
D/ D-F-Ab of
Eb/ Eb-F-G-Bb Kings
Db/ C-Eb-Ab Your
Db/ Bb-Eb-G Ma
/Ab Je
Db/ Ab-Db-F sty
Hope You've got the idea, so please you can may be start by showing me how you would play the song & then give me other tips on the subject.
Thank you again

In order to break this habit, you need to do 2 things: think more harmonically and less melodically, and don't play a chord/note for every word. To think harmonically means to think about the chord progressions and see how you can manipulate the progression and still stay with the song.
Also, realize that not every word you sing needs a chord to go with it. Sometimes, you can hold the previous chord for a whole group of words. Let the singers sing the song, you just play the chords. So, the first thing you need to do is know the chords of the song. Let's take yours for example:
F/ Db-Eb-F-Ab I
G/ Eb-F-G-Bb Wor
Ab/ Eb-Ab-C ship
Db/ Ab-Db-F you
/Bb-Eb-G
/Ab-Db-G
F/ Db-Eb-F-Ab in the
G/ Eb-F-G-Bb beauty
Ab/ Eb-Ab-C o
Bb/F-Bb-Db of
C/ Ab-C-Eb ho-
/ F-Bb-Db o
/ Eb-Ab-C ly
F/ Db-F-ab ne
G/ Eb-G-Bb e
A/ Eb-Gb-A-C e
Bb/F-Bb-Db ss
Bb/F-Bb-Db you are
C/ Eb-Ab-C Ro
D/ D-F-Ab yal
Eb/ Eb-G-Bb ty
Eb/ Eb-G-Bb So
F/ Eb-G-Ab-C I
A/Eb-Gb-A-C
Bb/ F-Bb-Db Crown you
C/ Eb-Ab-C King
D/ D-F-Ab of
Eb/ Eb-F-G-Bb Kings
Db/ C-Eb-Ab Your
Db/ Bb-Eb-G Ma
/Ab Je
Db/ Ab-Db-F sty
Now, put them into chord symbols:
Dbadd9/F I
Ebadd9/G Wor
Ab ship
Db you
Eb/Db
Dbsus4
Dbadd9/F in the
Ebadd9/G beauty
Ab o
Bbm of
Ab/C ho-
Bbm o
Ab ly
Db/F ne
Eb/G e
Adim7 e
Bbm ss
Bbm you are
Ab/C Ro
Ddim yal
Eb ty
Eb So
Fm9 I
Adim7
Bbm Crown you
Ab/C King
Ddim of
Ebadd9 Kings
Ab/Db Your
Eb/Db Maje
Db sty
Now that you know what the chords are, just play them w/out the melody being on top all the time. At first it's gonna sound weird cuz you will feel like you're not playing the song. But the more you do it, the more comfortable it will feel.
This is what I do. I think about the chords and disregard the melody. In fact, I make up my own melodies during the song. Every now and then I will hit a melody note, but my goal is to accompany and not to copy. So, here's a different way you can play this song (I may use different chords):
F / Ab-C-F
I
G / G-Bb-Eb wor-
Ab / Ab-C-Eb ship
Db / F-Ab-Db You,
C / Bb-Db-E-G
F / C-F-Ab
in the
G / G-Bb-Eb beau-
Ab / Ab-C-Eb ty of
Db / Ab-C-Eb ho-
li-, i-
Db / Db-F-Ab ne-
Eb / Eb-G-Bb ess
F / F-A-C
Bb / F-Bb-Db
You are
C / Eb-Ab-C ro-
Db / C-F-Ab yal-
Eb / Eb-G-Bb ty,
Eb / Eb-G-Bb so
F / C-F-A I
Bb / Db-F-Bb crown You
C / C-Eb-Ab King
Db / F-Ab-C of
Eb / Eb-G-Bb Kings,
Ab / Gb-A-C-F Your
Db / G-Bb-Eb ma-
Db / F-Ab-Db je-
Db / F-Ab-Db sty,
If you look at the chords carefully, you will see that some chords have more than one word beside them. And on the words that don't have a chord, that means the previous chord is held down. Most of the time I just use the closest inversion of the next chord I need. That's how I think harmonically. I take melody completely out of the equation and look at the chords. I hope this helps!

Try this:
1. Take your right Hand and sit on it (for real)
2. Now play the right hand chords with the 'left hand'.
It will for you to listen to just the harmony of the song, rather than the melody.
-
Im reminded of a song: "I stand here before you in wide open wonder amazed, at the..........."
You guys are really amazing-hitting the exact point on something that has haunted me for like seven years but you solve it within a few hours. You know I was actually afraid to ask such questions, I just thought they were not valid ;D
I have more challenges to put on the table
A billion thanks!

LOL
I actually used to do that!

Yeah, I bet you have the idea already, it is not that hard to understand all these by yourself. But going through the whole learning process by yourself is going to be very tough and it would need a lot of motivation and intention to make it work out. If you really wanted to improve, I suggest you to get someone to practice with or get someone to teach you as that would improve your learning experience better.
