Title: What Kind Of Bassist Do You Aspire To Be?
Post by: hitechjunkie on January 25, 2005, 09:24:33 AM
I was listening to a composition by the bass virtuoso Adam Nitti and
just recently, to Fred Hammonds CD "Somethin Bout Love" and
asked myself, what kind of bassist do I want to be?

Although it'd be amazing to be able to play lightning fast, sweeping
arpegios like Adam Nitti, I was listening to the simplicity of
Hammonds CD and realized that I, personally, am drawn MORE
to creating great compositions than I am to being great on any
one instrument.

I love listening to the interplay of instruments on different compositions
and how they work with each other to create a song.   I believe in
the saying, "less is more", and in knowing when NOT to play as
opposed to when to play.  I've played with a lot musicians who are
to busy playing to be heard, rather than listening for just the right
spot in a song to interject just the right musical phrase to actually
complement it.

let me know if there are any other categories you think i should include.
