:?: How many of you are the main musician on guitar and have no organist....versus those of us who play guitar with an organist?
The two are very different types of playing!

I am basically the only musician at this point because our church is just getting started and we basically sing without any accompanying music during our praise and testimonial service. I have been playing the guitar off and on for about 7 years but have been playing for the Lord for about 2 months and I must admit it is a far different style than what I started out playing (metal and alternative, before the Lord got hold of me). I just recently talked a drummer that I work with into coming and playing with me so with some prayer, and help from the Lord I should be able to pick up a bass player and a piano/keyboardist soon. It is somewhat difficult trying to figure all of the songs my church sings when I have been used to just looking up tab on OLGA, maybe some of you talented and blessed musicians can offer some pointers.

Oh, man, you had to bring this up. We have a reconditioned C2 just SITTNG there! I hate that. I want to learn, but I really don't have the time I ned to put into it right now, and I don't think I'd give up guitar for it--maybe on a few songs.
So, right now I pretty much fill the lead spot, my dad fills the rhythm (and some lead, too), our interim pastor drums, and we have a pretty good 13-year-old pianist (Yamaha digital piano).
...but no organist.
The brother we bought the organ from was down for a revival that week, and it was GREAT. But yes, very different. You actually get to play less.
Just to clarify, the organ was our previous pastor's idea, and he could kinda' play, and his wife (our previous MOM) could kinda' play, but after they left, it just sits.
I played it once on a sunday morning on "If Not For Grace" (is that the name?) 'cause it was in C, but I'm in no way proficient at it.
Any pointers for a transferring guitarist, Uriah?
Salt in the wound, man. Salt in the wound...

I play with a really tight organist and a drummer...so I get to stick to nice guitar stuff....but when we go to other churches sometimes I am all alone til the organist shows up and thats when I do the stuff on the gospel video!

[ive been playing guitar for 30 plus yrs. and have adapted to play with or without an organist.not to brag or anything, but give god the glory.ive found out that most guitarist are intimidated when put on the spot ,especially to carry the whole service plus the chior also. This has made me a complete musician by this accomplishmment.Listening to Uriah makes me feel like I come out of the same mould. I encourage guitarist,If the keybord can do it ,you also can do it in your own way :)

We have a pretty good organist, a keyboardist, bass player, a great youg drummer and myself with the chops. We're just now getting used to playing with each other because of personnel changes in the past few months, but we're becoming a tight group. The key is that we find time to just play - anything and everything. Whether it's gospel or just some kick that developed on the spot, we're learning each other and our levels and styles.

hey guys good bless. u have it good. i play guitar at my church i any have a drummer thats it. and sometimes its hard trying to play songs with just me . can any1 give me some advice on what to do
-
Just an ideal, you may want to play most of your songs chord melody style.Since you do not have a organist to play the melody. For sure on your hyms. :)
-
Trust me I know its hard without an organist but the one I play with is tooooooooooo busy when he's playing ..He's always adding things in and somethings just doesn't fit or sound right but you can't tell him that.

Its me(guitarist), Bass player, Drummer and a Keyboard player and the Keyboard is playing a Stack, and we got this new dude on Organ. I like his style, unlike most organist, he play to make the band and not to be the band. Most organist push da pedal to the floor and wonder why they dont hear anyone else. To the brother that has the problem with the keyboard player playing his licks back to him, i know how you feel, lol, my keyboard player in my group once did that. Just tell him, communication, i just used my eyes...think about it, lol

TRIED THAT; SHE SAY OK :o THEN TEN MINUTES LATER :'( SAME THING LOL IM GLAD SOMEONE ELSE SEE WHERE IM COMING FROM THANKS FOR THE INPUT ... BE BLESS. ;D

i dont know why keyboard players feel like they have to play the lead too, they dont understand the fact that them nice chords give da music the full touch and we do the melody and singing and stuff, just want to do everything. Im a start up a guitiarist group against Lead Keyboard players and Organist

Our keyboard player is an "Isley Bother" style player ::). He uses different sounds and textures to fill in the sound. I usually play the rhythm portion so he's free to do his solo licks. I'm happy with this arrangement because I enjoy playing rhythm guitar. Unless the song calls for me to do a specific lead part, I'll sit in the pocket with a nice riff. As long as the band sounds good.

I wonder if your band sometimes has the same problem as the people I play with. That is that the organist almost never plays the melody and his embellishments wander off the scale so much that it is nearly impossible to stay with him other than echoing his runs. When I try to play the melody, or play harmony notes in the scale of the melody, it sounds off because the melody that the choir is singing is either not correct or the voices singing the minor notes are so overpowering that the melody is not detectable. This situation can be frustrating for a guitar player.

Hi,
I've been lurking a few months just to get a feel for this forum. Very nice people here by the way.
Our group consists of a keyboardist, drummer and our organist doubles on bass and me on guitar. We do pretty well most of the time.Typically our keyboardist (M.O.M) maintains the melody and song structure and we follow him. The organ/bass and drums hold down rhythm. I fill spaces with licks and riffs. We know our space and our roles. And a good time is had by all ;D

It has been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Maybe she likes what she hears you doing, and just wants to be a part of it. Try talking gently with her about it. Also, in your time of medication and prayer, ask yourself if what you're doing is for God's glory or your own glory.

Oooops, sorry -- that should have been MEDITATION. :D I had my spell check on, but not my thought check. :-[

THANKS FOR THEM ENCOURAGING WORDS. EVERYTHING I DO IS FOR THE GLORY OF THE LORD BECAUSE HIS GRACE IS WHAT KEPT ME. FAR IS ME TALKING GENTLY TO HER ( WHO SAID I EVER TALK TO HER ANY WAY BUT GENTLY) SHE IS STILL NEW TO THIS. SHE WILL LEARN HER ROLE AS TIME GOES ON THROUGH EXPERIENCE. WHAT THEREFORE GOD HATH JOINED TOGETHER, LET NO MAN PUT ASUNDER. BE BLESS
