What are the 3 backup singers for if the singers are up the front dancing with James?
Are the dancers mic's even on?

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I have this dvd and I have to admit the music and singers all over the stage were just a tad too much for my taste. I'm a big fan of licks and musical arrangements being out of the box but it just seemed like they were trying to add a lick in every single part of every single song....sometimes the best thing about music is space ..just let it breathe.  Still not knocking em' for the arrangements, though ...they can definitely play !

At this point , I'm more into the way Aaron Lindsey produces and runs a band ..Ricky Minor ..I love when the music adds to and is the backup to what the singers are doing ..in this day and age, seems like the musician is the focal point and the singers/song are backing them up .

Exactly.  This must be what a gospel zoo sounds like.  On another note, let me be a REAL church musician for a second and ask..."who is that girl in the leather jacket with the DONK!!!"

I remember I borrowed this DVD from a friend a while back. The musician in me greatly enjoyed the compositions but watching the DVD was kind of pointless other than having something to look at.

My guess is they did this concert for two reasons. First for a album release or pre-release. Second for live footage for the DVD.

He probably wanted the live music and vocals to be as tight as a studio version. Problem is you get folks that aren't in the best shape dancing around stage and your vocal quality is going to go down for every BPM their heart rate increases. Also with that many live mics on stage you are going to increase bleeding and mic noise. So what do you do? Record most of the music live. Get three singers with mics to give the live audience vocals, Give the dancers dead mics, and record all the vocals in the studio minus the one live lead mic on stage.

They won't be the first to use this technique but they could have done a better job. I mean they had dudes singing on the female parts. Also the didn't even use live boundary mics to capture audience. They used audience track and it doesn't match at all to the recorded footage. Anyway I still enjoyed the DVD I just didn't enjoy watching it.

James Fortune's BAND always kills it...but in this video, the "performance" felt a little artificial.  I think that they (the singers/dancers) might of been trying to do a little too much.  But at the end of the day as long as GOD gets the glory.
