Title: Peavey Classic 30 Tube Change
Post by: reindale on March 17, 2011, 10:33:14 AM
I'm thinking about changing the tubes on my classic. Any suggestion? I want a nice clean sound.

Funkstrat's link in the other Classic 30 post has some good tube selection explanations in it.

I use Sovtek 12AX7WA's in mine, but that's the opposite of what you want lol.

Read that doc, it will explain a bit about how the amp works. The tube in V1 position really shapes your clean sound, but a lower gain tube there will impact your drive channel (V1 is always in the signal path).

I am looking to get a tube amp soon. Does the tube type/brand really make that much difference?

Type, yes; brand, not necessarily... within reason.

Had to have 4 tubes exchanged in mine couple of days ago.  They were replaced with the same stock Sovtek EL84/6BQ5 's.  It sounds great.  A nice warm and clean sound, great for jazz and gospel.
