hi folks recently got a tobias killer b 6 thinking about changing the pickups because it has the tobias pickups which im not getting any real punch from them or close to that ken smith tone which i like hearing just wonder what are some good pickups that will bring out a nice tone out the wood close to that ken smith tone

Hey that Tobias is a nice bass. I'm not sure you'll get it to sound like a Ken Smith. Both are really two different Luthiers... different blends of woods, pickups, and electronics. Ken Smith sells pickups that would probably replace the Bartolinis in your Tobias. However, I think you are going to have to get a Ken Smith to get "that" tone. I love that Ken Smith sound and want to add one to my arsenal. But I absolutely love the tone of my Michael Tobias.

When you say Tobias pups, are you talking about Bartolinis or do they say "Tobias" on them?
The Peavey Cirrus can get pretty close to the Ken Smith sound.

Also, if u take a good look, part of the Ken Smith sound (which i dont see the hoopla about) is from pickup PLACEMENT on the bass, both the neck pickup and the bridge pickup. Not too many bass brands give much variety in this area, especially between basses of the same brand.

tobias is written on the pups thinking about just going barts

If it's a Killer B the pick-ups are Bartolini. Unless it had a previous owner and they decided to take the Barts out and put in the Japanese Tobias pick-ups.

If the pickups have Tobias on them then I don't believe you bass is a Killer B. I believe you have the oversea version which the call a Toby. You should post a picture. I hope you didn't get lead into thinking this was an American made Tobia. I'm just looking out for you. I can't imagine someone taking one of a kind Bartolini pickups out of and American made Tobia and putting in the cheap pickups that come in the foreign made Tobias's. That's hard to believe. I hope you didn't get a foreign Tobias and paid the American price.

Nice bass you have there. But check these out. I know you Tobias is killing but man for $189.00 and do a bart upgrade. You will have a killin 4 string. These are all Ash and maple neck basses. I brought 3 2 5strings and a 4. The 4 feels just like my 75 Fender Jazz. I put emg's in it. OMG this boy rocks.
