Title: Where to start?
Post by: rlwalker3087 on April 29, 2011, 10:25:02 PM
Hi All,

I want to begin playing piano for my church. I've played classical piano for 17 years and I just began playing pipe organ. However, I'd like to add gospel style praise music and improvisation to my music library. When I was in college, I took a jazz improvisation class, and it helped a little. I worked out of a fake book, but reading chords is difficult for me. We also worked on all the scales and variations thereof...but I'm still not strong in this area. I can sight read everything from Chopin to Rachmaninoff but my theory background is weak.

Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

With your Classical background I would reccommend going through some printed Gospel music books, like Richard Smallwood or Brooklyn Tab. Choir.

A good selection can be found at www.ntimemusic.com (http://www.ntimemusic.com) ...
