I picked up 4 new books at Barnes & Noble on Tuesday.
I started reading one last night: Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin. She's one of my favorite novelists.
Thus far, I'm enjoying it, but I'm dreading the storyline. I actually wouldn't have bought the book had it not been marked down from $26.95 to $6.98. It's about a happily married couple (he's a pediatric plastic surgeon, she's a former psychologist, now stay-at-home mom), and a single mother of one (she's an attorney) whose lives cross paths when the single mom's son is accidentally burned at a sleepover. The husband becomes the boy's surgeon. The single mom and husband develop an attraction.
At this point, they haven't acknowledged the attraction yet, so I'm just dreading what's going to happen. The book is written from the perspectives of the two women, alternately.
It's good so far.

Interesting.......
I need to visit B&N I've only been there once in my lifetime lol.

I'm readingRich Dad poor Dad again
Also reading a book called E-Millions, that profiles people who made millions on the internet.
Just started a book called Internet riches about setting up a business online, but I'm sending it back as its way too basic
Also reading "Chicken soup for the entrepreneur's soul", itkweam has some interesting and inspiring stories.
Also reading a book on marketing called "Getting Business to Come to you"
Yeah, I must really have ADD.
-
I used to read those Chicken Soup books. I have no idea where they went. You lend out books and their gone forever. Just like I had "A Child Called It" and I had the 2nd part to it. I lent it out, never saw it again.
I still hadn't finished reading it. I just may buy all the books.
Hmmm.......that's definitely a thought.

Digital Exposure Handbook by Ross Hoddinott
1-2-3 Magic for Teachers
Spiritual Man by Watchman Nee
-
Just finished "Car Guys vs Bean Counters" by Bob Lutz. Now starting "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"
-
Celebration of Discipline: The path to spiritual growth by Richard J. Foster. I'm in the next to last chapter on guidance. Very deep book!
Not a fan: Becoming a completely committed follower of Jesus by Kyle Idleman.
Living by the book: the art and science of reading the bible by Howard G. and William D. Hendricks. Very good book for those who just want to improve their bible reading and those who are considering preaching/pastoral/teaching positions and opportunities.
-
Nothing, at the moment.
-
Half-way through the book and they have had a few tense moments, but no sex yet. I'm glad. I'm dreading it.
Although the author makes the single mom a character you want to root for, I have decidedly sided with the wife, and really feel bad for her.
Reading this book can make a woman pretty insecure, though. It's just pretty depressing to see that even the most solid, seemingly perfect marriage is susceptible to the temptation of cheating. These are all really good people, with integrity and morals. Just no reason to cheat, other than the fact that feelings arose. And who ignores their feelings? *sigh*

currently reading: Introduction to relational databases and SQL Programming.

I just finished Southern Lights by Danielle Steele. It was pretty good. Didn't end the way I wanted it to, though. I think it might be time for Danielle Steele to hang it up though.
That other book I referenced (Heart of the Matter) turned out to be a very good read, unbelievably well written, but I didn't like the ending. It was like she had a maximum # of pages she couldn't go over, and when she looked up, she only had 2 more pages she could fill, so she crammed the ending into 2 pages. It was weird. But still a good book.
-
Hi everyone, I'm currently reading Third Watch by Bodie and Brock Theone. It's a historical novel centered around the first century and is awesomely written. It's kind of hard to describe because the book is part of a series based on the Gospels and is a work of fiction. The books flesh out the lives of those who'd been touched by Jesus in a real and powerful way....really good read though.

so what happened between the husband and the single lady?

so what happened between the husband and the single lady?
SPOILER ALERT
The man slept with the single lady one time. He broke it off with her, went home looking sad, the wife knew something was going on and asked him if he had an affair. He started crying and admitted to it. She asked if they slept together; he admitted that they had only one time. She put him out. He begged and pleaded and after a couple of months, she let him back in and they got together. The book ended when he came back home.

I'm starting "The Purpose Driven Life" again today. I've started it a zillion times, but I've never gotten all the way through it. My friend and I are going to read it together. Hopefully we can make it through all 40 days. :-\
Hey, come to think of it, that would make a good Book Club book.

...and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Me and some of my girls have decided to go watch it on the balcony of Warren Theater in Moore, OK. I'm excited because the balcony is always sold out when I go, but I bought the tickets early. It's 21 and up. You have your own big recliner seat with a button on the side for a waiter to come to you so you can order off the menu. Been wanting to go for soooooo loooonnng!

Just finished "Car Guys vs Bean Counters" by Bob Lutz. Now starting "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"
My wife had bought "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" on her Kindle. I asked her why she was reading a book targeted towards Tweens. She almost passed out from laughing so hard. When she composed herself she suggested I read it for myself when I had the chance. I'm about 1/3 of the way in.
Now I'm like.......

If I ever see a tween reading this book (or the two that follow behind it) I'm slappin' it outta their hands.

What's it about, Malthumb?

What's it about, Malthumb?
It's a classic "closed room mystery". In this case, a closed island mystery. A crime has occurred. There is a finite number of suspects that could have committed the crime, but 40 years later,it remains unsolved. The point I'm at in the book has the two main protagonists, the ones likely solve the mystery, identified, though they have yet to meet each other. Both are VERY flawed individuals. The male protagonist has failed at marriage and has an"arrangement" with his female business partner and her husband (refer to picture in my last post). The female protagonist and title character is a woman in her late 20s who physically looks like a goth pre-teen but has some deeply rooted emotional issues. At the point I'm at in the book, she allows herself to be victimized by a legal guardian who has control over her finances (refer to picture in my last post).
The man whose relative was the victim of the crime is paying the male protagonist an unreal sum of money to try to solve the mystery and at the same time, write the man's biography, including detail on his dysfunctional family, many of whom are suspects.

The author brings out some examples of Grace that I never recognized before. Very interesting insight.
But it isn't 'meaty' enough for me. I was expecting a theological perspective. I haven't read the entire book yet so I'll have to hold off on my final review.

Bolded for emphasis.
The layout of the book is interesting. I'm at the halfway point of the book and the first half dealt with Grace in the Old Testament. The author went over the stories of several Old Testament characters and highlighted God's Grace in their lives. It's been eye-opening. The second half will deal with Grace in the New Testament.
It's a good, borderline-great book so far.
EDIT (11/28): I've been reading this book almost non-stop since yesterday and I just had one of those rare eye-opening moments while reading. No matter how the rest of the book is, it is officially a great book for me. The author's insight into the Grace of Jesus Christ is beautiful and life-changing. It has caused me to look at the bible, God, and His Christ in a brand new light. I'm actually going to start a thread based on some of the things I've read and what has been revealed to me by the Holy Spirit. I highly recommend it.

Wow, I can't wait to read this book!!! I wish you had invited us to read it along with you.
Anybody want to do this one with me?
I always saw the Bible as being divided into The Law (Old Testament) and Grace (The New Testament). It was as if I thought He suddenly added Grace to His character in the New Testament.
Look at Cain? The Lord actually reached out to Cain. He spoke to him and urged him to do the right thing. Grace. I believe the Lord saw the intent to kill Abel in his heart.
Even after he killed his brother the Lord set a mark on him that no man would kill him and vowed to take vengeance on anyone who did! Grace.
Look at Abraham?
God saw, of all people, AN IDOL MAKER and told him:
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
What did Abram do to deserve such a great blessing? Nothing. This was Grace.
Not only that, but what did God ask of Abram? Nothing. Grace doesn't add requirements because if you have to earn it it's no longer Grace.
I used to think that following The Law as closely as possible was God's requirement for the Children of Israel to have a relationship with Him, but that isn't true. The Law was simply to preserve the integrity of a pre-existing relationship, NOT a requirement to have one!
The relationship had already been established with Abraham.
I have a daughter. I have rules I want her to follow. Whether or not she follows those rules does NOT change the fact that she is my daughter. It would be crazy for me to require her to follow my rules before she's born. Obedience doesn't determine ownership.
Abraham was a coward and a liar. Jacob was a deceiver. David, the man after God's heart, was a lustful, murdering adulterer. Yet time and time again God's love and Grace was extended to them. Jonah was rebellious and HATED the gracious aspect of God's character, though God's Grace was shown to him time and time again.
Look at Rahab? A Canaanite prostitute who was grafted into the Israelite family and became the great-great-grandmother of David (which makes her an ancestor of Christ!).
And don't get me STARTED on the knowledge he's dropping in the New Testament. There's so much I'm missing, but it's really life-changing stuff.
-
YES! I did some independent scriptural studying of grace (need to get back on it too) and my gosh it is amazing! God's grace is so amazing! How in the world have we had this fundamental truth of the scripture wrong for so long? I also thank God for Pastor Ramsey and his grace teachings! Wow! God is amazing!

Supremely deep. Calvin's arguments and counter-arguments to atheism are profound. The connection he makes between knowing oneself and knowing God are quite interesting.

I'm reading "Hinds' Feet on High Places". Because of finals I'm listening to the audio book version. Honestly I don't know if it's the writing or the narrator but there are parts that seem really corny. Some things were just overdone to the point where I, as redundant as I can be sometimes, was like "I get it! Get on with it!" As I was driving I imagined it as an overacted Christian play at someone's church where people jump out of character to say certain key lines because they feel as though the audience won't get it (or clap) if they don't. Also, one piece of the allegory thus far seems theologically incorrect. I could be wrong. I've been wrong before. I'm trying to get through this book in a certain time frame, so I'll be listening to chapter 2 on the way home.

I get similar feelings, trying to wade through THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE. Perhaps because it is set up in a 40-day devotional format, using unfamiliar Bible translations, having to turn to the back to find Scriptural references. Appreciate the points Warren makes, but the way it is set up makes me feel talked at, not to...
Am thinking about checking out Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER. Anybody read that - is it worth it? Is it better than the movies?

Perhaps because it is set up in a 40-day devotional format, using unfamiliar Bible translations, having to turn to the back to find Scriptural references. Appreciate the points Warren makes, but the way it is set up makes me feel talked at, not to...
Am thinking about checking out Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER. Anybody read that - is it worth it? Is it better than the movies?
That's interesting you bring that up as I'm in the middle of the Purpose Driven Life book....LOL!!

I finished the first game in the 'The Hunger Games' trilogy:

Great, great books thus far. You know those books that you can't wait to read? The ones that make you long for time alone so you can find out what happens next?
I finished those, went on to read and finish the third book in the trilogy:

- Bossypants - Tina Fey
- Hoda - Hoda Kotb
- The War of the Worlds - H. G. Wells

Gonna go see "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" either tonight or tomorrow night.
Gotta see if the movie stays true to / lives up to the book.

"To Kill A Mockingbird" is one of those deep books that you can get something new from each rereading. Same can be said about the movie, whose understated yet elegant score by Elmer Bernstein I like...

Congrats on reading The Grace of God.
What are your impressions of the other books thus far? I'm always looking for more reading material.

I'm about to start "The Grace of God" ASAP! I want that "Gospel" book as well!

Btw I'm about to finish "The Pursuit of Holiness" by Jerry Bridges. The book is considered one of the greatest books (outside of the Bible) written on Holiness.
Also finishing:
-"Improving Yoru Serve: The Art of Unselfish Living" by Chuck Swindoll
-"It's not about me" by Max Lucado
-"Make Today Count" by John Maxwell
-"Radical" by David Platt

I love both Moonwalking with Einstein and Switch, but you have to be a nerd to enjoy them, of which I am. They're narrative, but at the same time very academic. The Gospel is a powerful read, even though I've heard a lot of the stuff before. A combined reading of The Gospel and Grace of God will liberate you and change your view of God (for the better).

So.....Hunger Games or Game of Thrones? Which should I tackle first?
I'd recommend Game of Thrones for you.
Mature themes. Interesting, complex, flawed characters. Epic scope.
I truly enjoyed the Hunger Games series, but it isn't nearly as deep and thought-provoking.
Hunger Games: More for a younger crowd (my daughter is reading it)
Game of Thrones: DEFINITELY more for a mature crowd

Very good book for any musician calld "The Rebirth of Music"
Just got saved and you are a musician? or its been on your heart to give your life to God?.. Read this.. I've loaned this book out several times to friends im witnessing too that listen to secular music and it changed their perspective of what they are actually listening too. This book really illuminates what we do as musicians in a very humble way, but makes you aware of the seriousness and the original purpose of music. I'd recommend this book to any church praise team or choir to read and study. Really opened my eyes. Will re-read it when i get it back this week.

LOVED the book. In short, it's a response to Stephen Hawkings' book 'The Grand Design' where Hawkings makes the claim that there is no God. It comes from a scientific angle versus solely using the Bible to support belief in the God we serve.
I believe it helps those who want to defend the faith from a physical perspective (as most non-believers don't, or won't listen to the spiritual perspective).

Ooooh Lawd, I don't know if I'm ready for that. But it sounds like something we should read. I believe all Christians should be apologists. I might have to get a copy for my scientist friend. And maybe I'll skim it myself.

I've had that same thought this summer. I'm just trying to have enough ammo for the fight. :D The great thing about the book is that it's not terribly technical in it's language; meaning there aren't too many unexplained scientific terminology.

Soo I JUST literally downloaded the free Kindle App for Android. I like it.

Oh yeah, I've been reading about the life of Jesus (or......well, the wording sounds weird to me, but anyways....) up until His resurrection. And I can truly say I'm in awe of Him all over again. :)
Jesus is SO cool! LOL No, but fa real!

I recieved a copy of "Tortured for Christ" in the mail. I'm not sure if my wife ordered it or if it just showed up. Either way, it's a very good short read. Communism is most assuredly driven by the devil. There is much more evil in the world than we are aware of here in America.

I'm reading Economix, a graphic novel about the history of the economy. I'm also reading "How to be Black" by Baratunde Thurston.
-
am slogging through "Joseph Anton" - Salman Rushdie's account of his going into hiding because of the Fatwa threats on his life because of his book "The Satanic Verses". It's 600+ pages, a lot of it is repetitive, reading like the children of Israel in the wilderness - "we went here, then there, then this other place". Don't think I can finish it before I have to return it to the library next Mon.
OTOH, does make some good points about the rise of extreme Islamists and the importance of free speech...

cool, I didn't know some churches did it that way tie your teaching lessons into sermons. It makes sense.
off topic
I was having a conversation with my wife about why I don't like to attend sunday school. At one point I said I wish it was after the sermon and that the sunday school lesson was about getting deeper into what was just preached. We both knew it wouldnt fly but still I think I would like that at least the conversations after church wouldn't be about he sho did preech today

There are pros and cons to it. Some of the pros include the entire church being on the same page vs having 4 to 5 different discussions. Also, it forces/allows teachers to talk about the topic pastor preached on from different angles. The cons of it is that sometimes it can feel redundant and sometimes limits the creativity of the class depending on what class it is. Oh and another pro is that it saves money. We don't buys Sunday school books anymore.

I just got finished with Introduction to a Journey by Robert Mulholland and Renovation of the Heart by Dallas Willard. The former was my favorite of the two. This is part of my review on those books:
Invitation to a journey was an easy read. Its language was accessible and vivid, painting a picture with increasing clarity. There was no doubt as to what were the intentions of the author, calling to self-diagnose one’s spiritual life, presenting the integration of the social sciences into the matter of discipleship and spiritual formation, and teaching on the personal and classic spiritual disciplines. The author is obviously a believer in Jungian psychology and personality traits in particular. Nevertheless, he is even more an advocate of prayer, fasting and the Word, to which he adds on particular practices of the ascetics and monastics of centuries past. With Mulholland, he takes discipleship to the level of “being” instead of doing. And he is holistic in his approach, in saying that people need to foment the opposite side of their personality (what Carl Jung would call one’s ‘shadow self’). In saying such, he is advocating for whatever spiritual practices are adequate to each particular individual rather than offering a cookie-cutter approach to spirituality. He calls readers to a total dependence upon Christ and to a renouncing of all ways of selfishness and control within their hearts. And he also exhorts the readers to undertake the journey of spiritual discipleship and discipline, not for their own benefit alone, but for the sake of serving the body of Christ and serving others who do not know Jesus. Finally, he urges the readers to live a life of social justice as a manifestation of the spiritual discipleship and growth of their newfound journey.
Renovation of the Heart is a very challenging book, both in the difficulty of its reading level and in its indictment of the human condition. After reading this book, one does truly realize how thoroughly ‘lost’ every area of our society really is. I am not one given to conspiracy theories, however, I walked away thinking that the “world around us is under the control of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19) I was left with a sense of despair about people’s present plight. Nevertheless, I was also very hopeful about what God wants to do in our lives. To Willard, the transformation must begin in one’s mind. Then, it will extend to one’s feelings. (emotions, sensations or desires, Willard 120) From there, the surrender of the will (heart or spirit) to the will of God will make people Christ-like. While I might not particularly endorse C.T. Studd’s “Don’t Care a ****” Campaign, Willard is on to something with his call to focus in will, but for good. (Willard 153) Anyways, Willard does not seem to be afraid of controversy, speaking out against both the social structures at large and at the extremists within present-day Christianity-in short, all those who belong to the status quo. He gives a particular place of sanctity to the human body as central to God’s plan. He also speaks of “taking all this literally” in such a way that is reminiscent of Alfred Adler’s organ dialect. (Willard 166)
Willard speaks also of “assault and withdrawal” as two forms of evil that wound others, which permeate relationships at every level. (Willard 181) He would have us not remain cold to each other, but rather be proactive about restoring every one to where they ought to be. He replaces the oft-employed definition for the “soul” with “what is at the depths of a person’s being that cannot be communicated using terms like ‘person’ or ‘self’ or various available pronouns.” (Willard 206)
One might think of Mulholland’s book as rather a workbook to accompany one’s faith and seeking of the LORD. Keep it in the Bible case, and visit and revisit regularly, as often as needed. The steps to follow in Lectio Divina are particularly helpful techniques in regular feeding of one’s spirit with the Word.
Renovation of the Heart would be a useful book for weeklong retreats, getaways and as a companion booklet for spiritual conferences and renewal seminars. It stands as a prophetic witness, calling back the people of our nation to God’s rule in their hearts and to Christlikeness in every aspect of their lives. The student should read both of these books on vacation time, setting aside the necessary time to participate in every action of introspection and to engage in every spiritual discipline proscribed here. I am thankful for the opportunity to have read these books, and I give Renovation of the Heart a rating of four out of five. And I give Invitation to a Journey a rating of a five out of five.
