Hey guys! I bought a Yamaha MO-8 about 4 months ago and love the feel and sounds it has. However 'cool' the sounds are, I can't find a good use for them in church. Not sure if I made the Best decision because I hear averyone talking about the different kinds of Sounds produced by the Fantom, (aka the Rhoads etc) and others. I would love to unlock the full potential of this board for live church services and Youth explosions, but for now I only really find myself using it just as a piano... Any Ideas?
I'm really curious as to see what kind of keyboards are the most popular here in this forum.
Thanks 8)

I own an original Motif 6 but my church has a MO-8 and it has some decent sounds. I use the Rhodes sound a lot, sometimes the organs, I'll add strings on top of the piano sound, I've used brass off of it, synth leads and synth pads. The best way to get into using other sounds is to emulate whatever sounds were used on the recording of a song.

Ahh! I love the suggestions man, Thanks! So you're a Yamaha fan as well? I eventually want to upgrade to the Motif XF8... but that's gonna be a while LOL :)

Right now, I'm running a two tier keyboard set up with a rack case on the side.
My keyboards are:
Triton Extreme -88 key (on bottom)
Roland Fantom G7 (on top)
my rack modules are:
Motif Rack XS
Roland XV -5080
Roland Fantom XR
Korg m3m
I have a friend that has some HEAVY use of the mo8. I will get with him later tonight or tomorrow afternoon and get a list of some of the best patches to be used in your mo8. One suggestion that I could make that would add a quick arsenal of sounds to your set-up with low cost is some type of sound module. I was telling some guys earlier today (on the Korg forums) that the Roland XV/JV modules have become a staple for Gospel Keyboardist. Nice thick/warm sounds and 64 more voices of polyphony. You could get a 1080 or 2080 for under $250... (you could probably get a 1080 for under $175. Check your local/surrounding craigslist and just type in Roland XV or Roland JV and see what you find.
That would be a quick and easy way to improve your sound palette. I'll check with my guy and get a quick list of some sounds you can use in church!
God Bless!!!

No matter what yamaha you have. . Eventually you will learn that they all are pretty much the same engine. And whats really funny is you pay all that money just to have a few performances you actually use. If you find the best sounding performance on your keyboard( no matter what the category or sound) and change the voices to the voices you would prefer. Youll find yourself with a great performance. Its the effects and filters that make the performance sound great. But the advantage is you already found the great effects and filters, because you searched for the best sounding performance first. Usually its the first voice in master mode.

XS 6 for strings/brass/piano drums/grooves and organ (if I don't have a B3 or my CX3 organ).
PT-join the "Motifator" forum www.MOTIFATOR.com (http://www.MOTIFATOR.com) free and a LOT of good stuff.Get the "how to "video on your board and study as well as all the U-tube clips out there.
There's some differences-but as Apex said some basics btwn all the Motif seris.
Another nice module is the JV1010 from Roland

Casio wk-3800. Definitely not the best board out there, but I know how to make co-players who rush to other brand keyboards very jealous of some explosive & majestic sounds this machine makes. Just tweak it right and you have a board to kill for. I know the board's limitations, but make the best use of most of it's capabilities.
The mo-8 is a powerful tool. Before you rush to upgrade to the xf, I suggest you spend time learning which voices to use when on the mo-8. The suggestions made above are very solid. I make limited use of it because the Casio does 80% of what I want it to do :)

Yo I have the Privia 575r and I feel the same way. I used to be torn about getting more of a stage piano, but for what? The Privia has everything I need and its SIMPLE to use. My man has the MO 8 and I feel like Im pressing a cheat code for Mortal Combat when I work it lol. IMO, the Privia organ patches CRUSH Yamaha. ::puts on helmet and vest::
-
I agree-the casios have some decent sounds.
Their B3 sounds-thru a good amp(Fender bass amp w/15") could fool ya.A little better sample and tweakin' and move up the contender level.
I still like my XS organ-pretty close to Korg CX 3 and Nord-the f/s leslie could be better.
-
Korg X3, Korg M50-61 and Roland Fantom X8. Love each one, they each have their own pro's/cons, but love them all the same.

Apex that would be wonderful if you could talk to you friend about th best patches for the MO*. Thanks for the tips as well man. I have heard about ppl getting actual sound modules...but i just never heard one, or played with one enough to go get one.
...My man has the MO 8 and I feel like Im pressing a cheat code for Mortal Combat when I work it lol.
BAHAHAHAHA!!! dude I know exactly what you mean! I do get the same feeling I had when trying to bust out a 'Fatality' years ago when MK first came out! lol It's going to take some getting used to, but being as this is my 1st keyboard...it's kinda tough. (YES believe it or not I only practiced on my upright piano at home for the last 8 yrs! So glad to have a keyboard now. It makes my practice more efficient) :)
DocJohn! Thanks so much for the link man, I've been browsing them and loving it!!

I have a Motif XS8, which I just love! My church has a MO8. I never really played on it much, because I bring my boards to church and my lil sis in Christ plays on the MO. I, too, am interested in knowing more about this board so I can help my sis work her way around it better. :)
-
Roland Fantom X6 (on top)
Yamaha Motif XS7 (on bottom)
Kurzweil SP76 (mid week) - I use this board during the week and for rehearsals/bible study since I don't want to carry the XS every single time. I plan to use this board as a midi controller for software instruments I plan to use from my macbook. It's semi-weighted and also light so its pretty portable.
I thought real hard about getting the MO8, simply because I want weighted keys and didn't want to pay 2 or 3 grand for a "motif 88".
your MO8 will be great for church service...
-
I have a mo8...its pretty cool.

the Casio does 80% of what I want it to do :)
EXACTLY!! The only reason to get another board is for more sounds. The features on my Casio are not found on too many other boards. If I could transport a few cool organ and e.piano sounds, I would be set.

Maaaaaaaaaan, I LOVED my casio. The "F2" key broke during transport and I use that key a lot, so I decided to upgrade. I definitely don't regret my upgrade, but I did love my casio. :)

Do you know if Casios like the Wk 7500 be used to play vst sounds like on Logic?

Lets join hands in prayer for T-Block's Casio endorsement. maybe it'll even come with a few digital watches. lol
Im rocking all yamaha. Have a Motif ES6 that stays at my church (that sucka is heavy), an MM6 (the sounds pale in comparison to the motif, but better than my E313) that i used either as a second board hooked up via MIDI to the motif or to travel with (so light), and my E313 thats my practice board at home. Dont get to play around with sounds and performances all that much though.
-
Thanks for all the comments! Yeah so Far Yamaha is dominating this post
So far here's my list of Pro's and Cons (review) of the MO-8: This is just with about 4 months of using it and NOT an exhaustive list by any means. Just my opinions :)
Pros:
*Weighted Keys - Love the feel especially when playing piano sounds. Feels real.
*The multitrack faders - The BEST way to fade in or out whatever you want! I use strings or brass mixed with piano and fade the other two out if i just want piano. It sure beats clicking buttons and having a cut in the music.
*Performance tracks - Hard to figure out, but when you got it down, you have the ability to do a whole church service (drums, bass, clicks etc) by yourself! You can instantly go from shout to a shout run or perticular 'run' or Vamp, then back. even make your own intro's and endings. Takes a TON of work, but it's possible.
Cons:
*This sucker is BIG and HEAVY!! - it makes me not ever want to take it anywhere. Have been deciding on getting an 'additional' cheap and light (CASIO lol) keyboard just to take everywhere.
*"I feel like Im pressing a cheat code for Mortal Combat when I work it lol" (Ma1ne) LOL Couldn't have said it better man. Hard to figure out, and the instruction book is not very kind either! Could have been easier to get where you want to go IMHO
*Every change you make has to be stored on a flash drive! - It's frustrating sometimes making little changes here and there, and even after its all saved to the board, if you turn it off without saving Everything once again to your flash drive, everything you did will be ....gone!
-
I have a mo8...its pretty cool.
RAY?! You got a MO-8?? You Definitley Need to do a 'Ray's Corner' on the Mo-8 man. Just sayin'. ;D
-
save your shekels for a travel board-look @ the 61 key Yamaha just into'd-the MO X.
Has a lot of XS sounds-(still used on the XF);that + laptop=killer lite rig.
-
I have a Korg TR n learning tha full use of this Board I love it but i wanna try out a motif soon.....
-
If I could transport a few cool organ and e.piano sounds, I would be set.
That + one other piano sound [I'm thinking of a specific roland piano sound].
Lets join hands in prayer for T-Block's Casio endorsement. maybe it'll even come with a few digital watches. lol
Hater!! Though I wouldn't mind a few complementary gift watches with a casio keyboard purchase.

Musicians friend has the Casio WK3800 board on sale for $239.00 for whom it may concern. Please excuse this break in the thread.

Do they ship Casios to South Africa? Now that's ultra cheap!! I can get two - donate one to church and sell one to the guys who always bug me about the board!!
-
Yes, that is a very good price even though the board is discontinued. I am not sure though, if they will ship abroad.

Hey every1......
I SWEAR by YAMAHA, which has the best keyboards in the WORLD LOL!!!! But seriously, I have a Motif 6, Motif Rack, Motif XS8 and a S90ES and I LOVE THEM ALL!!!! Used to own an MO8 but I sold it...
The best thing about Yamaha keyboards is their performance mode... just beautiful. You can layer and split the keyboard all kinds of ways! On all my boards I have 9 or 10 performances saved with all my favorite combos for any situation live or studio. I use my S90ES for almost everything, it sounds amazing- For my layers, I always use a great piano sound (Power Grand, Natural S) with an EP (BalladKey, Vintage'74, BellDX), strings (HardEns, MediumEns) and a synth (Powered, BigSquish).
-

is your piano sound a performance with those two patches layered together? or do you have both those pianos + those EPs in one performance...
how exactly do you have all this layered up?

I took the MO-8 to church last weekend and for some weird reason, there is an annoying humm through the PA system! I've tried every port too, R - L - even the headphone jack and still humming! I say weird because we plug the church's Roland back in (Left mono) and absolutely no hum... so... I may be thinking about upgrading sooner then later :/
I'm really torn as to what i need to get! I thought the MO8 was 'all that' but now having my doubts (see the above review lol). I really don't need portability but i'm thinking very positively about a 76 key Yamaha ___________ something. I'm now COGIC and could use a board that's awesome for 'shout' and 'praise' music! I say torn because I really LOOOOOOVEEE the sounds of this: http://youtu.be/r4O18ldT2DQ (http://youtu.be/r4O18ldT2DQ)
Help?

is your piano sound a performance with those two patches layered together? or do you have both those pianos + those EPs in one performance...
how exactly do you have all this layered up?
LOL.... For my usual sound, it is a piano with an EP a little softer volume wise.... I always have strings and syn brass, but they are turned down until needed. For most stuff I play, piano, EP and a lil strings for the bed seem to work great... And for shout music, just piano and syn brass.
-
hey P;you probably just need to balance the gain of your keys thru the amp.Look @ back of the MO-there should be a gain control trim knob-adjust that and see if it helps. If not-do the same thing @ your amp/mixer-have to balance different line signals from different manufacturers.
If you still have an issue-may be a ground issue-try another ac/outlet plug for your board.Last case-get a direct box for your board-2 if you run stereo.
Yes-the price of really good gear is much cheaper-for 2 k +/-;it's possible to get a nice board.

having the strings and syn brass turned down until you need it still eats away at your polyphony doesn't it?
-
Aw man, Im looking at getting the MO8 :-( I figured that'll be my last board I need to buy, because it has pretty much everything you need. Whats some of the cons you have?
-
having the strings and syn brass turned down until you need it still eats away at your polyphony doesn't it?
On the original motifs and S90's yea of course! But, with the S90ES, I'll have 4 sounds saved in a perf patch, then delete one depending on the song, and roll with 3... With the XS polyphony is not an issue LOL!
-
having the strings and syn brass turned down until you need it still eats away at your polyphony doesn't it?
Yeah, that's very annoying.
-
I have an old MOTIF 8 it has everything fully restored so though it is old it is virtually new. I got it for a very low price and so I graduated to this. I don't know how to use everything yet but I just explore. I use a lot of the Keyboard & piano voicings. I think if I want to play keyboard bass it can be useful for that as well. It is also has pretty good horns if you are keyboard #2. Looks like you have the newer most recent version of this keyboard so your options are pretty vast. Great keyboards like the Cadillac of boards in my book. Fantom is like the Bentley in my opinion! Casio like the Kia of boards. LOL!
-
I own a Roland Fantom X8. It's pretty heavy, but I love it. My 2nd keyboard is a Yamaha YPG-535, which is slowly going out... so I may be in the market for a newer replacement for it. I got my eyes on the new Yamaha MO X8 and the MM8
-
I have a YPG-625 currently and the screen is messed up so I cant see what I need to do as far as recording, so I am definetly looking to get a Motif as well
-
Korg trition extreme, yahama w5
-
My personal board is a Roland GW-8 workstation. My church set up in a Yamaha Digital piano with a Yahmaha MM6 on top. I have my own sound board as well as running through the HOUSE lightly. LOVE IT!! :)
-
My church has the MOX8 its a lot lighter. The sound are cool and its a audio interface. I do like the MO8 better for performance. I can do more with it.
-
MAN!! I'm really not likin' the MO-8 anymore! :( It's heavy and too bulky to carry evry Sunday! LOL
I'm lookin for a good board with BRASS and Synths... and the MO-8 is not known for either! I don't know what to do, either get another Keyboard (Or module), or find a way to download new sounds for this thing. Any ideas?
...but a part of me really wants to save up for the Korg M3 or Kronos ;D
-
How much do you want to spend;and is it just a travel board?
Korg has the PS 60,about $600,lite,probably the easiest one to mix varied sounds but CHEESE keys!
The M 50;nice sounds,lite,has drum loops;CHEESE keys.
Depending on if you sell your MO;you could get an XS 6 or 7 for probably under 2 k.
If you leave your MO @ church, you could get the M3 rack-just move the rack back +forth, use a cheap controller @ home for practice.
I'm NOT liking the Kronos;basically KORG's top end board using the CX3 organ sound.Really? I've had my CX 3 since 2001-nice board -but I gotta question this.I played the 61 note @ GC and quality wise;think I'll pass.
Maybe look @ Kurzweil's PC line-a friend talks pretty higly
-

not even gonna comment.... try to hold my peace and let the Lord fight my battle!!!!
lol
-
I'm with ya Apex-just personal preference.My 1 st 2 boards after my B3 were a DSS and M1(korg).
Was playing a kronos 88 @ GC yesterday-can't see the good for all the upfront stuff that would get in my way.Pianos' good, but not 3 k-for a non-legit pianist(me).
-
I'm lookin for a good board with BRASS and Synths...
Isn't Korg praised for this?? You can even go for a 2nd hand give-away to sample the sounds :-\ Look at other options besides the Kronos alone. It also seems to be too bulky. But if you play anything like Apex, then you might as well go for the Kronos :)
Kurz also has some nice sounds in this arena..so you have a few options..
-
Until I got my XS-Korg pretty much nailed Brass. On my old M1,circa 1990,the brass card had patches that killed for covers of "Chicago,BST,tenor sax,Blue Note(alto + trumpet)."
Alesis ,in their QS seris board and rack had some nice brass also.I had a QS 6+7.1 and an extra expansion card "latin brass" that when layered fooled some folks! You might find one of those cheap-$1-300.A friend still has my brass card(I hope)-think I paid $125 new.
For a travel board-lite,but sturdy.
The Korg PS I mentioned is one of the best ideas out there;good sounds-EASY mixing/splitting from the panel and decent sound.Cheap build quality on the keys. Most of the ones I've seen @ Sam Ash and GC jammed/stuck keys. They are abused-but so are road boards.
-
I just watched some demo videos of the Korg PS-60. I like the lightweight(ness?) of it and the sounds. I just wasn't ready to go 61 key :/ but i must think outside the box and now worry about staying in my comfort zone! lol
I'm Still Pro Kronos, Apex! :D I mean the SSD hard drives really make all the difference. The fact that I can strick a key and hear the full sound of the piano ring for about 30secs like an actual piano is amazing! You can switch between sounds without the instant 'cut off' as each sound is independantly running of the hard drives :)
-
PT-do you have the MO or the MO X?
The MO X has some cool computer interface;might be an option.
You can layer that PS(thru midi);if you have 2 (or more) midi boards or you can set it up "organ -like".Korg shows that in an ad with their SV and Ps as a nice church rig.
-
I got the S90-ES & I don't know how to use it.....LOL!!!! I just use the preset voices & I downloaded some voices from Jamal Hartwell. Are there any tutorial sites around that you know of?
-
You tube,www.motifator.com,and I think an offshoot site called S 70 or S().
Check Yamaha's site maybe for a link to the S70/90

OK GOT IT! :D
I'm going to sell my MO-8, and buy a used Yamaha Motif XS_ . Then I'm getting a Roland MKS-20 sound module or plugin for the board. The sounds are amazing, and the keys on the Motif are better than the MO8 imho.
-
Cool. Have you payed the mox? And yeah there are a lot of options as far as getting the mks sound now....(other than the actual module).
-
The MoX? I'll have to look it up. Man this is harder than I thought to actually be satisfied with a keyboard... LOL am I too Picky?!
-
the MO X still feels like a MO, with tons of reduced features. The touch cannot be compared to the feel of the flagship XS model
-
Yamaha YPG 235

No such thing... Spending the kinda money we spend to get quality gear ... You should be picky. Thing is the job can get done with multiple tools...it boils down to preference and some specific needs. Do your research now and not later....the second hand market can be very mean to people with new gear... If you buy used, it's not so bad, but if you buy new and later learn that you should have gone a different direction, you lose a nice chunk of money. So be safe ask questions now. I'll help however I can. I have a lot of gear and I've tried a lot of gear. I also ask a lot of questions.... Lol, so whatever I can do to help, just let me know!!!!

Casio WK-1630
This board is my baby and I ain't never getting rid of it. I don't care what nobody says, I love this board. :D
My first keyboard was a Casio and I still will play them today. I have a Yamaha P-100, which is more just a basic piano with a few bells and whistles. My Roland X7 died on me a couple of years ago, so oh well. The keyboard doesn't make the musician, the musician makes the keyboard! For the most part Motif's and Roland keyboards are more studio based than for the purpose of teaching a true pianist or organist. Although I would love to have the Hammond XK2.

Yamaha MM8, Yamaha DGX 220 , Yamaha DGX 230 & A Casio
Correction: Yamaha MM8, Yamaha DGX 220 , Yamaha DGX 205 & A Casio (Organ sounds are very good)

Right now, I'm running a two tier keyboard set up with a rack case on the side.
My keyboards are:
Triton Extreme -88 key (on bottom)
Roland Fantom G7 (on top)
my rack modules are:
Motif Rack XS
Roland XV -5080
Roland Fantom XR
Korg m3m
Wow my rig has changed DRASTICALLY since this post in August of last year...
Now my complete rig is:
Keyboards:
Korg Kronos 88
Yamaha Motif XF7 w/ Firewire
Roland JW-50 (just used a quick controller, I can throw in the car with no case and get to in and out of rehearsals quickly)
Sound Modules:
Korg m3m
Roland XV 5080
Roland JD 990
I've gotten rid of the:
Roland Fantom G7
Yamaha Motif Rack XS
Triton Extreme 88
Roland Fantom XR
-
is the JW just a controller or does it have soundset?
Nice rig-where's the hammond/clone?
-
is the JW just a controller or does it have soundset?
Nice rig-where's the hammond/clone?
the JW-50 does have a sound set... and it was nice for the time (I still use it from TIME TO TIME... and that's a big TIME TO TIME (rarely).... It's basically general midi, but it's a spin off. it's ok...
The Hammond Clone is in my Kronos there is a CX-3 model inside of it. just go to youtube and search korg kronos cx 3.
-
drawbars EVERYTHING on board (touch screen AND physical). the insert fx aren't from the fx engine, they are part of the modeler... it's really dope. check it out. youtube Kronos cx 3.
-
but for the most part the js50 stays home under the couch.
-
I don't have to research the CX3 bro-it lives right under my XS 6!!! Awesome organ,I can do just about anything on my CX3 that I can with my B3!!
My 2 nd cx;I had one of the last new OriGinal CX 3 circa 1980.
I was talking to Scott May-Ides of March, now @ Hammond.Apart from the B3 ,SK-one of the best clones out there.

I have a motif 6, motif 8 and motif es 6. I used to be a big roland fan, but not anymore! I normally use a patch I put together of A bass, piano, strings and brass. I have a Hammond xk-3 that I use through my motif using midi also. That's ALL I need! Check out the link below of a song I produced with my motif es!

When you're done drooling over the possibility of playing all twelve keys with the same fingerings, come check out the thread I opened up on it (http://www.virginmedia.com/images/chromatone.jpg) and lets have a discussion!

Looks like a typewriter, lol.
Now that you mention it, it does, T-Block. Back in high school, they had these typwriters with little caps on the keys so that you wouldn't look at the keys, and would learn to type while reading from the material you were typing. It didn't take long to learn where the keys were. Maybe the principle is the same but the typewriter didn't have 312 keys.
