It depends.  If you can sing on pitch and can sing each part to teach your choir then I don't think so.  However, if you have trouble singing on pitch, you or one of your musicians need to be able to play the melody and the harmony parts, together and individually, on an instrument. Usually the instrument is a keyboard or piano but it could be any melodic instrument.  In my experience with choirs, also, helpful to be able to play the song for the choir to sing to.  If you, a musician, or the band can play the song on an instrument(s) that will help.  However, if you can't have live music at your rehearsal and you haven't figured out how to play the song but you still want to teach it, look into tracks just for rehearsal.

You really don't need to know how to play piano to lead, It is important that you do know your notes though. This will help you be more effective in teaching, leading, and placement.  God has blessed you with some talent,(tools) it's up to you to sharpen those tools.  You can get by with what you know, and that's great, however, don't settle for where your at.  To many resources are available not to enhance your ability at what it is you do for the Lord.  It's like having a bible, and not reading it.  Faith comes from hearing the word of God (reading the bible), just as the increase in directing come from the constant studying of your craft at all angles.  Good luck, and I hope I was encouraging and not discouraging.

I don't play the piano, but I definitely know my keys.  If a song has tricky harmonies, I will find a keyboard and chart out the harmonies so that in rehearsal I'm not fumbling to find it.  It definitely is a great benefit to know your notes but not required to be a director.
