Title: Are You a People Person?
Post by: SirTJ on October 07, 2011, 10:26:08 AM
I was lying on my bed last night, doing a bit of meditating before dozing off, when it hit me -- I am NOT a people person. I was trying to figure out why I'm so open around certain people and so reserved around others. I've come to realize that, if I'm not around a person who can hold my interest, I make very little effort to establish any type of rapport with that person. I think I actually make more of an effort to distance myself.

The problem with that is, it's rare to find people who can hold my attention. Most people are boring, copycats of each other. I think that's why I love LGM so much -- such a wide variety of interesting people and viewpoints.

Anyone else have this problem? Are you a people person?

Yes and no. Yes because I love counseling with/encouraging people in their difficult moments and no because hanging out with people doesn't "excite" me. I don't mind hanging with people but it doesn't make me wanna shout 10 times...LOL!

I'm an OUR people person.  That is to say people who believe as we believe.   I can function around others, be a witness to them, and socialize to a point but I go better with my folks.

I am, but not really.  I can be in a group and have fun, but I enjoy being by myself or spending time with just a few close friends.  God was dealing with me about this, because as a child, I was so inclusive of everybody, reaching out to outsiders and leaving no one out.  Somewhere along the way I developed a preference for my favorites.  They're still the odd ducks and sometimes outsiders, but God was really showing me that I need to return to my first calling which was to make everyone feel loved and included.

No, I'm not friendly. At all.

People tend to think I'm shy. I'm really not shy at all. My social skills just suck (when meeting new people), so I just don't say much. *shrug* And then, sometimes.... I just don't want to talk.

HOWEVER, IF I'm in the mood, I can talk your ear off.

nope not a people person

According to that personality test thread most people on LGM are introverts by nature.  So we do not tend to just go out and be friends with anyone and everyone.

No I'm not and I think I've gotten worse over the years.  I'm trying to be more expressive and LGM is helping me with this.

I recently reconnected with a couple friends from my elementary school and I was really shocked when they told me that they always thought I was shy.  I never thought I was.  I know I'm very guarded and always think about what I say before I say it.  I've been told that people don't like that because it does not seem spontaneous... idk.

I'm making a resolution now to work on my conversation skills!!

I am a people person--it helps with my profession.  At the same time, I don't go out of my way to befriend folks, either.

I am cordial, social, and can yuck it up with just about anyone but sharing information about myself (in person) is not as easy.

And, I'm just fine with that.

Definitely not a people person, and I've honestly given up on trying to work on it. I find that I typically don't like people* at all; I just tolerate people.

I am, however, VERY good at faking it in situations where I have to (interviews, ministry, small gatherings, meet-and-greets). I also do well when entertaining people in my home, but only for a short period of time. But once my "people meter" has reached its maximum capacity, I will shut completely down.

I'm outgoing, but introverted.

*I mean "people" as a whole, like as in humanity. I'm not saying that I don't like any individual people.

You're just a different kind of breed.

And..... we still love and accept you for who you are. LOL

*Yes, I'm going to bother you all day*

You're just a different kind of breed.

This is true. And after all these years, I'm finally starting to accept that.

It's funny because my niece is also extremely.... different. And I love watching my sister cultivate her different-ness. My mom didn't really do that with me, but my niece, from the age of about 4 was just so happy and proud to be different - and she remains quite comfortable in her skin. It's a beautiful thing to see. :)

And no ma'am, you will not be bothering me today. I will ignore you.  :P

In my youth, I was painfully shy and a nerd.  A short while past I told an acquaintance that I was shy and he laughed at me.  He thought I was joking. I am still shy, but I can get in there and cut and slash with the best of them.   I am an introvert who acts like an extrovert when in a group.  One or two close friends is about all I would ever make.  A lot of acquaintances.

I don't dislike other people at all.  I am always glad to see people when they come around.  I am not upset when they don't, and not many do. Do we give off vibrations? I only get lonesome when those near and dear to me are not around.

I am clearly not a people person.  Maybe a people person wannabe because that is who society applauds.  My job called for a people person.  I was a people person impostor then and good at it.

On LGM we can talk without committment, an attractive thing for introverts.  No small talk to do, no drinks to get, no looking at the clock, no wondering how it will go, and a captive audience.  Touching but not touching.(a large percentage, not all. some extroverts)

I had no idea that I would make this a social site.  I wanted to learn how to play the keyboard, and this site was helping me.  Early on, I didn't even look at the Lounge. As time passed, I have grown addicted to it and enjoy reading the posts every day.  It seems like I know the people.  And apparently, I am not the only introvert posting.

I'm different. I'm shy, but I've gotten waaaay better with it.  I never mind doing things by myself. I actually prefer shopping by myself, going to the movies every now and then alone and doing day to day stuff...alone. I've gotten so much better with my social skills and I'm a jokester at heart, always making people laugh so I guess I am some what of a people person.

I do tend to draw away when I don't feel like being bothered though...

I am not. I do not know how to do "small" talk.

I also do not understand this incessant, almost feverish need by some people to always be around others.

**Whiny voice**
Come with me to the movies... let's go to the store together...let's go visit this totally random person you don't know...

**sigh**

Nope.

This is a skill I need to learn pronto.

I hate small talk.  I think small talk is for small-minded people.....Yeah, I guess I'm not much of a people-person either.  :D

I also hate small talk. I get visibly irritated when people try to make small talk with me - even if they're just being courteous (i.e. at work: "so, got any big plans for the weekend?" or "so I spent the whole weekend at the vet's." Ugh!

Even though I don't enjoy small talk I've gotten better with making small talk because it happens to me way too often.  I try to make small talk into an actual conversation because that either stops the convo all together or it becomes an actual convo.

You could've just cosigned my post and you know it. LOL!

You're not a pp but you're EXCELLENT (even better than I) at adapting when you have to. Plus, you're selfless, which always helps.

LOLOL!  i just felt like an outburst.  You right though, I could have lol.  I have always had to be a ppl person though.  For some reason, all my life Ive always been in these ambassador or leadership positions.  Like in Europe, many times I was the first black person alot of ppl saw when we traveled.  Or in strange places, I seem to be the person ppl talk to calm their nerves LOL.  Its just easy for me to be kind.  Actually in my heart I get irritated VERY fast and Im very opinionated.  I actually dont like being around ppl.   God has just blessed me with the patience of a slug on crutches.

Sorry...NOT a people person. Wish I was, but...

Wondering how many of Jesus' disciples were extroverts vs. introverts.
And even our Lord felt the need to get away from the masses from time to time...
