Title: What kind of peace does God give?
Post by: SisterCM on January 14, 2012, 06:27:48 PM
Jesus told his disciples, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" John 14:27

What kind of peace does the world give which is not like the one Jesus gives?

I don't think the focus of that sentence is the gift, but rather the way the gift is given.

Jesus told his disciples, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" John 14:27

What kind of peace does the world give which is not like the one Jesus gives?

The peace that the world gives is temporary and conditional and as fickle as the world is... it is subject to the same unforeseen circumstance and the whim of sinful men that life can be. The peace that Jesus gives is real and tangible .. that is why people have been able to go to their deaths singing hyms of praise or prayers of intercession for their killers instead of shouting curses and oaths of vengeance or pleading for mercy.

The peace that Jesus gives renders strength to the weakest of us, eyes to those of us who could not see, a voice to those of us who had none, and courage in the face of terror to those of us who were cowards when faced with the same onslaught but equipped only with the illusory peace that this world has to offer. The peace that Jesus gives sees more of the post game victory than the fourth quarter battle. It sees beyond loss, beyond pain, beyond fear, beyond lack, beyond hate, beyond doubt and it gives us legs to stand with ... when our own can no longer support us.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

(amp)
6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition ([a]definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.

7 And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [c]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Peace
1) a state of national tranquillity

a) exemption from the rage and havoc of war

2) peace between individuals, i.e. harmony, concord

3) security, safety, prosperity, felicity, (because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous)

4) of the Messiah's peace

a) the way that leads to peace (salvation)

5) of Christianity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is

6) the blessed state of devout and upright men after death

Transcend
1. To pass beyond the limits of: emotions that transcend understanding.
2. To be greater than, as in intensity or power; surpass: love that transcends infatuation.
3. To exist above and independent of (material experience or the universe): "One never can see the thing in itself, because the mind does not transcend phenomena" (Hilaire Belloc)

Philippians is also what came to me.  Also, the world's peace is counterfeit.

1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

I'd say the only true peace there is comes from God, the rest is just hype.

The world's peace: temporary, fading, fleeting, shallow and it might come at a price you don't want to pay.
God's peace: permanent, deep, eternal and all it costs is confessing and believing.
