T-Block, this is an awesome post, didnt take near as long as I thought to pick it up, I figured it would have been too hard so I never touched it.
For my own edification, and so I can pick the song apart for theory, is this posted Ab or Eb?
And that leads me to another question, how hard is it to decipher a whether a song is being played in Ab or Eb? I was looking over both scales and with small difference both seem fairly close. Am I overlooking something really basic here?
again T-Block awesome post :)

I know I am not T-Block but I thought I try to anser this one for ya!

I usually know the key at the very beginning of a song...but not the intro....like the beginning of a chorus or verse

ddwe, howd you figure it was Db? I was looking the black notes and how it felt playing and the first thing that popped into my head was Ab, but if you dont mind shedding some light I would greatly appreciate it.

Now that Ive gone back to my keyboard and started counting notes, Db makes perfect sense, no accidentals and the 1-4-5 works out perfectly. With that being said though, how do you tell the difference when your just listening, especially when some chords may sound the same within different keys? Is it a matter where you have to pick out all the chords? or can you get by with picking out some of them?
-
For me....I can find the key by just several of the chords and listening to the progressions, which I think (other than chords) listening to progressions will tell you automatically what key you are in...but how i can find the key pretty well...but most of the time i cna hear the note within the first 5 secs of a song..

If you look at the title, right under it I have the key, which is Db. Don't believe me, here it is:
"Lord I Lift Your Name On High":
Key of Db LH/RH
See Key of Db? I always make sure I put the title and key for my posts so there is no question.

You know, you can play just about any chord you want in any key as long as it sounds good. All music doesn't have to make sense theoretically. As long as their is a basic formula that can be repeated it is fine. When you start just playing all over the place, then you are going to lose the listeners. I start with the bass notes and analyze those first. For example, if a bass line goes D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb you look at the notes and say what key can all those notes be found in. Since there is two flats then you can say with about 95% accuracy that it is in a flat key. So, you know F is out cuz F has 1 flat. Then there is Bb. All those notes lie in the key of Bb, but is that really the key? In Bb, those notes would be: D=3, G=6, C=2, F=5, Bb=1, Eb=4 Since it doesn't end on Bb but keeps going to Eb, then that should tell you Bb is not the key. Let's go to Eb: D=7, G=3, C=6, F=2, Bb=5, Eb=1 Ahhhh, it ends with Eb so Eb must be the key. The bass note (usually) tells you what the chord is.

My bad, I guess I glanced over the line with the LH/RH designation and didnt bother to look. Mistake on my part
But back to the last point that you made, does the song always end on the 1 of they key your playing on? and a related question, does it always start on the 1as well?

To answer that....no not all of the time...but it does most of the time...Sometimes when a song starts on the 1 I may go to the 3 instead or maybe the 6 or something like that....It just depends on the song

this method assumes that the end of the bass movement is on the root, which is not always the case, and to determine that, other things must be taken into context, particularly the chord quality.
Usually i hear where the song resolves and thats usually the root.
