Can someone give me just ideas of some things you did to play in EVERY key and get comfortable ??
-
Yeah, do what I did.
Play for a church that allows anybody to grab a mic and start singing any song in any key
After a while of that, you'll be very comfortable in all keys.
But if you want to learn the right way, it just takes personal practice, time and dedication.
Remember that patters are not dependent on keys. Learn the patterns and it'll make it easier to transpose.
It's all about the patterns.
-
By saying patterns what you mean progressions ??
-
yeah patterns are progressions. So learn the number system and that will allow you to take what you know in one key and play it in other.
Also listen to and play songs in different keys. You can get a program like virtual DJ (the free version) and change the key of the song so you can play along in keys that you are not too good in.
Oh and learn your scales
-
There is a thread somewhere that T-Block did years ago that list scales, chords, and progressions in every key.
I would learn all 12 major scales. Then I would learn the chords associated with the note in a given scale. In other words, play your major scales with chords. Remember to learn all inversions of the chords. Next, I would play the most common progressions in all keys. Every now and then play a very easy song in the keys that you are trying to learn. (i.e. How great is our God)

All of the information in these links helped me get comfortable in every key, as well as taking songs that I learned and learning them in other keys:

Another idea for learning to play in every key is to disable the transpose button. Then you won't have a choice. ;)
-
#1 Know the Nashville Number System well.
#2 Buy good quality painter's tape (paper tape) and put a piece on the keys relative to the scale of the major key you're trying to learn. If you feel the need you may also use a sharpie to mark numbers on the relative keys.
(Don't buy cheap painter's tape as it will leave your keys sticky but good quality tape from your local hardware store should work and not leave your keys sticky. Pay a few dollars extra for the good quality.)
# After you learn to play a song in your new key, determine to learn a new song in that key. You never feel totally comfortable until you start to sound out songs in that key.
I did this over a course of a few weeks. I put paper tape over my keys and played songs until I could play them moderately well in that key and then removed the tape and practiced until I can play without mistakes and then move on to the next key. The keys in which I learned to sound out songs are what I consider my bread and butter keys.
My approach for learning is very simple and it is this.
"Paper tape and practice."

Remember this. 1,4 and 5 are major 2,3 sand 6 are minor. 7 is 5 6/3 inversion or diminished. You can now play in every key. Its just that simple. Still don't believe me? Watch this

Get a drum beat going and sing a simple song in every key. It would be good if you have singers who like that kind of stuff. I got some ideas on how to help every one progress as a group but not many people are willing to do that consistently.

Thnx everyone !! You guys are awesome
