I am really curious about this. This is a spin-off from TJ's thread on TD Jakes.
When you pray, do you address Jesus directly or do you address God in the name of Jesus?
I sometimes address God directly, Jesus directly, or the Holy Ghost directly. While I believe that there is only ONE God, I have always done this.
However, looking back on the prayers Jesus prayed, and how he instructs us to pray, I see nowhere where he asks us to address him directly. Bible scholars can help me out here. :)
-
I pray to the father in Jesus' name. Jesus said anything you ask the father in my name, I will do it. Sometimes in my prayer, I do address the Holy Ghost directly, especially for the things the bible specifically ascribes to his "person". I can't fully explain how God operates, so the best I can do is follow Jesus' directions.
-
Matthew 6:9-14
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
-
I believe the 3 are 1 (fully), so I pray to 1 being using all sorts of names ('Master' mostly but I'll also say Jesus a lot, Lord, Father, God, King, Holy Ghost, Ruler, Savior).
-
I really believe a lot of Christians unconsciously think of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost as 3 distinct beings. Yet when asked, many Christians will say that there is just one God.
I just find it very interesting how we can reconcile this apparent contradiction in our minds. God really made our minds in an amazing way. :)

Ezekiel said he saw him as the wheel in the wheel, John said he saw him in the book of the seven seals... ;D

I was always taught to pray TO the Father, THROUGH Jesus, BY the Holy Spirit.

This also...I pray to God in Jesus' name on every prayer...even if I'm just speaking to him in solitude; However, I have never addressed the Holy Ghost directly...maybe I'm missing what you are saying in the Bible about this, can you expound.

Well the scripture tells us that the Holy Ghost is a comforter, a teacher, and a guide. So if I'm in a situation where I need any of those things, I will ask the Holy Spirit to help me. It is a prayer because it is a communication with God, I address the Holy Spirit specifically Jesus promised that He would do these things.
-
I'm apt at pray to God(Abba :)) through JC.
the HS, being the 'paraclete', I address like my has-all-the-answers 'patna'

Understood, never thought of it that way...
-
I just thought of one thing though Nessalyn that I have a question on; if the holy spirit is not the person that answers a prayer, why pray to the holy spirit? Yes the holy spirit may be all of the things you mentioned, but if the holy spirit is not the one to answer prayers, why pray to the holy spirit? I'm not being difficult, just trying to get the reasoning because my mom used to do the same also.
-
I always thought when people say stuff like "help me, Holy Ghost", they are asking God to strengthen them or power them by way of the Holy Spirit. Not by strength, nor by might, but by my spirit...that type of thing.
-
I've always prayed "Father God in the name of Jesus". Even though I always acknowledge the Holy Ghost, I dont pray directly to Him. If I'm enlightened with a thought or inspiration I will always say "Thank you Holy Ghost/Spirit".

That makes sense, but I still don't get why? If you pray in Jesus name as the Bible tells us, why all of the rest? Pray to God in Jesus name, I don't get the rest unless it's just fluff to make a prayer sound good of how many names one can use? I'm not demeaning what you are saying, I just don't get it and never understood why?
-

Kinda like what Nessa said, it just depends on what you're praying about.
As I said, I believe there's only ONE GOD and His name is Jesus. So I don't pray to one through the other in the name of another with the help of another... that's not me. I pray to ONE, period. HOWEVER, I recognize His distinct roles and so if I'm praying for civil unrest, I might address Him as the Giver of Peace or Jehovah Shalom or Jehova Rapha or Rophe. If I'm praying for victory, I might call Him King or Jehovah Nissi. If I'm praying He helps me to submit and humble myself, I might call Him Master (actually, I almost always call Him Master). If I'm praying for power, I might call Him Holy Ghost. Either way, I'm still praying to the same ONE GOD, I'm just calling Him by His other names.
Does that make sense? Someone else may be able to explain it more clearly.
-

I don't think it's fluff, per se, I believe it's just the pray(er) using the MANY names of God during a particular prayer.

Ok...that makes sense to me now, I get what you both, SJ and Layla, are saying. Thank you!...I guess I'm straight to the point and if I'm talking to someone, God included, I talk to him like I talk to everyone else in real life in Jesus name! I don't know, that's just me, but both of your points make sense now.

I know some people will get upset about me saying I talk to everyone the same, God included, but God is my friend!...People will sing it every Sunday, "I am a Friend of God", but don't really get it! I talk to him through Jesus name and I guess it's ok if thats how other people feel.
-
I'm gonna have to do some more studying on this topic. I've never seen an instance in the Bible where anyone prays or instructs us to pray to Jesus or the Holy Spirit. If it exists, please someone direct me to it. I do see countless instances where Jesus instructs us to pray TO THE FATHER.
"When you pray, pray like this...OUR FATHER..." -Matt. 6:9

I got that kind of wrong, but the Bible and Jesus does instruct us to pray in his name to our father, which is God! I'll re-look up the reference now, but I think Layla gave it and that was my question on the holy spirit, because I've never seen that.

Please, I do the same thing. I have two-way conversations with God driving in the car, lol. But I believe God is God is God so he is present and able to manifest in whatever role is needed. I also believe he honors his order, so as Teej said, if he says pray to the Father in his name, then I'm not gonna ask him why, if I want results, I'm just going to do it his way. After all, I don't care about the dynamics of how it's heard, just that it's heard.
-
What is Jesus and our Father's name...i.e...God!
God is not their name. That's like saying "human" is my name.
-

I can tell you right now where the disconnect lies. There is no position that says we should pray to Jesus or to the Holy Spirit. However, like most other Apostolics, I believe that they (Father, Son, and HG) are ALL ONE (not 3 manifestations of 1, etc....) Just ONE. So whatever you call Him, you're still praying to the same ONE the Bible tells you to pray to.
That's my personal conviction. As Fenix implied earlier, it's hard to grasp that when in the back of your mind, you really DO see them as 3 separate and distinct beings.
-
This all circles back to the doctrinal issue of trinity vs. oneness, and I don't think any of us want to get back into that.... lol.
-
God is not their name. That's like saying "human" is my name.
You got a point to a certain extent, I had to think about it a minute, that's why I changed my post...lol. However, they are all one, even if you want to talk the trinity and who is at the top God! Whether you call him Alla, Wonderful Counselor, Glorious King of Kings, etc., He is still God and it incorporates it all TJ.
-

Do you mean 'Allah'? And if so...
Wut?

That's not what I'm asking. I'm trying to figure out where we're instructed to pray to anyone besides the Father.
Like Rue said, it really boils down to trinity vs oneness. Seems this divide reaches farther than I thought.
-
Wut?
Whatever, you know what I meant, even if I spelled it wrong or I wasn't referring to TJ...lol! God is God in no matter what language or their interpretation of the Bible...

*running away from the Allah/God discussion*

I stop short of lumping Allah in the bunch... I believe that they are calling on a false god who they believe is the true God.
-
Maybe everyone is missing what I'm saying...there is only "1" God, can we all agree on that, than who should we pray too and who's name? Why ask something in the Holy Spirit's name if he can't do it? Only one person can and Jesus in the Bible said to ask in his name, so why beat around the bush?
-
Whatever, you know what I meant, even if I spelled it wrong or I wasn't referring to TJ...lol! God is God in no matter what language or their interpretation of the Bible...
Allah may simply mean 'God', but the Islamic connotation is so strong that I wouldn't mention that name with the others.
-
I stop short of lumping Allah in the bunch... I believe that they are calling on a false god who they believe is the true God.
I've been there, the interpretation is the same God, just some of the teachings we have learned here are different. The difference is everyone attacks each other to what they say is "right", not listening to each other speak or having a reasonable discussion. The Bible elludes to the point we should never argue scripture, but we do it all the time without a reasonable talk and assume cause we don't agree someone must be wrong? I don't know anymore, I try to look at the bigger picture first. I'll find out when I get to heaven!
-
Okay so I won't get into the discussion, but I do want to point out that the word "allah" (as in the letters that make up the name) mean the same thing as the word "elohim." Allah is the Arabic translation of Elohim.
That's all I'm saying (and in case anyone is wondering, no, I do not believe in the deity of the Islamic god because I believe in the deity of Jesus the Christ). But it is really, really good to study the origins of Islam to understand that the Koran and Islam itself have mostly the same stories and characters as the Bible and Christianity, but they were translated into a different language and with a different "revelation" so they came out differently. And of course, the key is that they do not believe Jesus is Lord.
But as for the word "Allah".... it means Elohim. That sorta means that if you are a non-Western Christian acknowledging the God of the Bible in an Arabic language, you'd probably call him Allah because that's your native tongue.
-

So you already know, then? Cool. At first it felt like you were trying to understand, but it appears you are already convinced in your beliefs. Allah may simply mean 'God', but the Islamic connotation is so strong that I wouldn't mention that name with the others.
Indeed.
It's kind of like the Mormons who believe in Jesus Christ, but also believe he's the brother of Satan. That's not the same Jesus Christ I believe in, even if they do use the same name.
-

I believe the characterization of the Muslim god is a false god; he is NOT Jehovah God.

This is me right here. I mean come on, God knows exactly who we are praying to, so what's the big doggone deal?

So who is Lucifer, he was God's most talented musician and a very much loved angel! Like a son to God, does God hate him? I think not, he still loves the one we call Satan/Lucifer! So who are we to hate Lucifer? The ultimate task is to love the one's that are trying to do you harm!...

Hmmm.
You're stretching a little past my comfort zone.
I don't hate Lucifer. He doesn't exist.
I do, however, HATE satan. He is the embodiment of everything God hates, and he is God's arch-enemy. Yeah, I hate him and his mama too.... their whole organization. I hate 'em all.

What? I didn't say anything about loving or hating Lucifer. I never even addressed that. Where did you get that?
But since you brought it up, you're saying we're supposed to love the devil? How? I mean love would mean you wish the best for him, and want to help him be all he can be. He can't be saved, and can't be anything but evil. So no, I don't love him. No where in the bible does it tell us to love satan. We are supposed to dismiss everything Satan brings to us, we should not engage him, or pay any attention to him. He is our adversary, bent on destroying our souls. Ain't no love there.
The bible tells us to love our enemies, but it's based on the fact that we are not wrestling against flesh and blood, we are fighting against an enemy that is NOT people. That enemy IS the devil and all of his spiritual forces.

Yes God hates Satan, because God hates sin. Satan is sin and will never change from that. There is nothing godly about Satan, not one thing.
-
Hate never turns it around, only love does! I pray to God in Jesus name, it's that simple. I pray to Jesus, in God's name or whatever name I use for God's name/Allah if I so choose. I'm not trying to sway anyone here is there are many issues that a few people hove issues on definately..Anyway I'm not going to go there, Reddgirl, Nessalyn, Laylamoore, T, TJ, U13, & definately SJ, Lordluvr, Fenix...lol, wow it's so many more, I can go on, I appreciate it everyone, you all are truly my fam! I was not addressing my comment solely to you Nessa, I got your point! for real!... I have to go to work now, but I bet God believes and God knows Lucifer can be saved again, just like he knew the prodical son could be saved! He is God!!!
-
Fascinating!
Anyways I want to speak to the Oneness V Trinitarian views. I don't see any inherent conflict between them. Maybe I haven't studied it deeply enough, but I don't see Oneness as being heretical. Oneness seems to imply, to me, that there is ONE being...ONE. This being is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost at the same time.
So what is the problem with that? ?/?
-
The devil has "NO" power over you at all, you know God and talk to God. God wants you to do what makes you productive and happy, satan has no power unless you let him have power in your life!...Stop blaming it on lucifer, God's favorite Angel, he knows you are thinking like him and guess what? God gave us the "will" to think like him? I'm sick of excuses, it's on you!
-
Nessalyn, you remind me of my mom so much I don't know how to say some things, but I don't agree with everything you say. just think about my post, you dont have too agree!
-
No sir. I don't agree that the devil can be saved. The bible confirms his everlasting destiny.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matthew 25:41
He has an eternal reservation. If he had any hope of redemption he would change and avoid the torment coming his way. But since he is going, that is why he is on a mission to take all with him who will fall to his deceit. Which is why hell hath enlarged herself.
-
Wait, Cas10a, you do realize that Lucifer and satan are not interchangeable beings, right? Lucifer was an angel who fell. satan is the devil. satan is NOT the angel that God loved and placed over the music ministry.
-

There are a lot of things we must chalk up to interpretation, but this isn't one of them. Satan (don't even call him Lucifer anymore) can't be saved. He is doomed. Damned. It has already been foreseen in the book of Revelations. He can't repent and end up walking around heaven like it's all good, throwin' peace signs and what have you.
-
SMH... I never met anybody worried about the devil's well-being. That joka would kill you now if he could.
-
What the devil?????????
I wonder why hell is personified as being a female opening her mouth wide?
Isaiah 5:14
Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure:....
Any sound speculations?

Not sure, but Proverbs personnifies deceit and seduction as a woman, as well. Maybe because a woman is subtle but can draw a man into something he would otherwise steer clear of. People are enticed and deceived into hell. No one goes there really seeing the whole picture clearly. Similar to a woman's seduction... got your head all messed up, lol.
-
What the devil?????????
Can I backtrack and LOL at this?
Rue, maybe that's why people won't say "deviled eggs", you may get too comfortable and start pitying him and loving him and what not...

1. Trekkie points. you gets a flagon of Romulan Ale for that.
2. once Louis Cypher got the big head, he got stripped of his appellation. He isn't bearing any more light, so can't be referred to as such. He is done. It's true, I read the spoiler on the interwebs.
3. incidentally, Wisdom is described as a woman as well.
4. at the end o' the day, it really doesn't matter what one doctrine sez versus another. As long as Jehovah hears me, He answers, and I live by whut He said.
(not negating healthy discussion, jus' sayin.)

As LM ,Ness and other have said-LORD has many NAMES-some representative of particular aspects of HIS PERSONA in OT.
In NT;JESUS gives us an "edge",to go directly to FATHER,in HIS NAME.
JESUS further tells us to cry out,"ABBA (FATHER)" thru the HOLY SPIRIT.
Some good responses here, but in CHRIST-;pray and know HOLY SPIRIT takes your prayer to JESUS after HE perfects it,JESUS as ADVOCATE presents to FATHER ;WHO asnwers!
A new liberty! The emphasis is NOT of flesh-but of CHRIST.

Wow, this has really taken a turn.
I think Ezekiel said it best...
Ezekiel 28: 11-19
"Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou [art] the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee [so]: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never [shalt] thou [be] any more."

That's it.
