Title: Is this burnout or time to move on to a new hobby, career, etc?
Post by: chevonee on April 23, 2012, 04:06:36 AM
Ok let me first attempt to exlain what I'm looking for.

Bill has been playing the organ/keyboard for more than 16 years. His biggest dreams in life were to play at the biggest concerts and meetings. Now he suddenly has no desire to play, practice, or anything. He used to listen to music and instantly play it but now he has no motivation or drive to play. Ok so my question is...is this just burnout or is it time for him to move on to something else?

It could be burnout.  It could be frustration.  It could be something else.  "Bill" may not be satisfied with where "he" is, especially if he's not playing concerts or traveling in the circles he thought he would by now.  There could be other factors.  He may have found other interests that have taken his time and energy.  It's hard to tell with so little info.  But, I'd suggest that Bill do an inspection and determine the source.

Dear Bill,

This is a normal process in life. There's nothing wrong with taking a little break. This may remind you why you started playing. Hey after a little time off, you will know if this is what you want to do. If your heart is stirred by the sound of music after a few months, you will know what to do.

sell all your equipment on LGM to help other musicans ... and then go volunteer to teach others how to play ... :)

One thing I love about CSE is that he almost ALWAYS says what I was thinking, but without all the fluff and extra words and stuff. He literally just drops his two cents and walks back out. I love it.

Yeah like the time she asked about how you would spend $300k. We knew it was her who got the money, so we are still gonna hit her up for some cash! :D

Hard to tell (Hypothetical or not). Could be weariness (too busy) or frustration with the situation at church, not having other outlets to play. For me, I tend to get more burned-out with frustrations with relationships in ministries (disrespect), leading me to doubt myself and wonder if my efforts are bearing fruit...
