Well, since this is the day Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman has opened, I just wanted to hear from those who have actually gone out and seen the movie, what did you think of it?
I admit that I have never seen any of Tyler Perry's plays (which I know are out on DVD right now) and a colleague of mine recommened I see the play Diary of a Mad Black Woman first to prior to seeing the movie.
And also, so far the reviews I have read have been very negative! :(
At least from the Detroit online papers and Chicago papers I have read negative reviews, and I am NOT EVEN going to bother to listen to the major WGN radio Chicago movie critic, because I KNOW he's going to trash the movie.
So I just want to hear from people who have actually seen it, is it worth seeing.

I just got back from seeing "Tyler Perry's DMBW" IT WAS A HIT... My favorite part wsa when Madea Helen went back to the house and trashed it... When they came to themselves they were in jail....Oh, and when Madea got house arrest from Judge Emphrim..Oh my Im ganna tell the whole movie..LOL, it was great in my book. I am going with a couple of friends tommorow. Tonite most of my church went, we had about 80 go...and the ones that didnt work are going tommorow....If we hadnt bought the tickets Wed, then we wouldnt have had a seat...the movie is sold out at Pensacola, FL biggest movie theater through SUNDAY?!?!? The black community is showing its love and Tyler is showing God's love (in his own little unique way)!

Well I must say, black folk were out in numbers beginning with the first show which was at 1:30pm. I was amazed to see so many of US out to support Mr. Perry- all ages. I went to the 4:30 showing and found it to be pretty good. I can't say that I laughed and hollered as I did watching the play on DVD of DMBW, but all and all it was pretty funny. I really enjoyed the spirtual encouragement from Cicely Tyson, what a blessing to be in her presence I'm sure it was for the actors/actresses. On a 1-5 scale I give the movie a 3.75.
For those who haven't seen the play live or on DVD after seeing the movie I encourage you to see it on DVD.

I seen the movie on the lst day twice..i love the movie i don't care about what that movie critic said..he should have seen Tyler other plays. hollywood thought they were gonna loose out on money cause they turn down mel gibson movie about Jesus..so they wanted in on the money..LOL.. i love the part about when the wife smack the whorish husband upside his head and put him in the tub. I like, call the PO!..PO! PART TOO..and when the judge said about whitney and bobby..it was quick...it was a good good movie. we need more movies like this. I live in a small town and the blacks was lined up to the back of the door to see it..they sold out...celebration theater should have had to rooms open for the weekend..Tyler...is just to funnyhe and his plays deserve to go hollywood. Tyler is u read this..keep your plays like this..American need a good CLEAN laugh...!! Now put T. Perry up for the AWARDS.

I'm glad to hear the positive reviews of actual people going out to see the movie. What irritated me about the movie reviews I read is they seemed very self-righteous/condescending "Black people deserved better than this.." attitude. (yes, I hate to say this, these were white critics in the Detroit newspaper I read and a major white critic here in Chicago) :( . It's like okay, go see Tyler Perry's plays FIRST and/or go watch the movie and let that inspire you to go see his plays. I've been pretty lax in my movie watching (I have yet to see "Ray", "Woman, Thou Art Loosed") and that's sad! :cry:

I loved this movie. It was very funny. The only thing different from his plays is that the plays had more singing but this movie was very good.

i'm sorry i must say something.... we are many churches going 2 see this movie? is it supposed 2 be a christian play??? isn't there profanity in this film? and does tyler perry dress up as a woman? is it me or does some1 else see a bit of homosexuality promotion. again 2 understand where i'm coming 4rm PLEASE get out of the flesh and move into the spirit realm.

I understand where u coming from drummer boy but this play/movie has a spiritual message this movie is about forgiveness and a number of other things and I know from going to see this movie friday with a friend that is coming to church with me today that this play will change lives we nust allow God to use who he uses to get who he wants and thats lost souls

I agree with drummerboy, I think we as black people and Christians try so hard to search for an identity that we will flock to anything as long as it is produced by other blacks or has some mention of God. Christ spoke the word in truth, not watered down, and not conforming to the way the world would see it. I mean come on people, do you really think Christ needs a grown man running around dressed up like a woman to spread the gospel (read Deuteronomy 22:5). The Word tells us to separate ourselves from the world, not to conform to it. I know some off you will say things like "how do we get the young folk in?” My answer is by prayer and living a Christ like life. The reason the young folk are so messed up is because they don't have any positive examples. We should be their examples, pointing them to Christ.

I've heard wonderful things about T. Perry. I also have his plays on DVD. I haven't seen the movie yet but Oprah endorsed it and said it was hillarious. I also think we as Christians should learn to laugh a bit more. I know God's got a sense of humor because I prayed about something and it didn't turn out the way I prayed, I just looked to heaven and laughed. I said God, you got that one. :D And everytime I think about it (Esp. after Sister T gave that link... :lol: ) I just laugh. :D

Well, can't we make the same argument about "Woman, Thou Art Loosed", from what I have heard and understand, it's an R rated movie because it deals with sexual abuse and a lot of other crazy stuff, yet how many of us here (i.e. Christians) seen that movie.
And I do agree that we as Black folks need to at least check out movies that have solid Black characters and give our opinions on it, because I'm sick of tired, like I'm hearing right now this white movie critic here at the major radio station in Chicago making comments like "Jamie Foxx is a moron", after watching Jamie win the best actor award (not to get off topic here, but yes, Jamie did win the Oscar!), but giving no constructive, solid criticism of a movie.
Okay, enough venting. :?

Man-O-Man... I agree with JoyCH... we need to loosen up alittle...cuz we are so up tight.... be free like a child.... cuz the bible as says that too... I saw the movie and I thought it was great... So are the plays... Even Meet The Browns.... Tyler Perry is a man of God.... handling his ministry... lets support him and laugh alittle... and lets no overlook the messages... so many women are going through that... keep praying for Mr. Perry... and I hope her comes out with Medea Family Reunion...

I have to admit, I am usually on Drummerboy's side on most stuff... I truly thank God for the message that Tyler Perry is sending to the Black Community. My and a friend of mine went to see it again last night (for the second time!), and at the end when the "dope using wife" comes bback to the church, this lady starts crying sitting next to me... Many people will not come to the quote, unquote "church" but they will go somewhere where they feel comfortable at, and everyone loves a laugh. This woman stayed in the theater talking to my friend and I until the workers came inside cleaning. She was saying that the woman in that scene was her and she needed to get back in the church. So i just left off where Tyler started and invited her to church. And God WORKED ON THAT SISTER TODAY!!!! She will be back at our regular service on Tues. Night.
It wouldn't have happened if he didnt do the movie. If one soul comes back to God the ANGELS IN HEAVEN PRAISE GOD!!!

every1 seems 2 be missing the point i'm making except 4 a few. i laugh and have fun more than anybody trust me and those that know me will tell u so. however, when it comes 2 the things of God play time is over. don't get me wrong.....i have seen the stage play and the movie and yes they are powerful tools, but what i said was stop saying this was ordained of God. again profanity and a man dressed as a woman did not come 4rm God. God will never go against his word. Now God can & has used this film 2 affect/change the lives of many, but there is a big difference 4rm something being God ordained and something being man made but thru the power of God he used it 4 his glory instead. don't get it twisted.
all this other stuff about laughing i never said anything was wrong with it the Bible teaches us that "laughter is good for the soul" and "a merry heart doeth good like a medicine" we as believers must be ever so careful at what we laugh at this is all i'm saying. again, whenever i post something i don't expect every1 2 agree nor do i want them 2, but again 2 fully understand we must come out of the flesh and enter into the spirit realm.

Drummerboy you've made some valid points. I've seen the plays and although they were funny, the Lord brought those very points you've made to me as well.
If these plays and the movie are suppose to be Christian-based, then why does the main character, who continuously mock Christianity, gets most of the attention. That reminds me of the play "The devil made me do it." The devil, the bad character, got all the laughs and attention. I wonder if folk got the "message" in the play or just enjoyed what the devil did. Seems folk remember more of the dirt that Madea did (the cussin, fussin, stealin, shooting, & mockery) then anything else. I won't dispute the success of Tyler's works. The man is definitely prospering financially, but I know Christ does not need Oprah's approval to show if it's ordained by God. More than anything, I pray that Tyler prosper spiritually, in Christ Jesus. I do praise Jesus for that woman who did see the movie and was broken to seek deliverance, as mentioned by Preachahman.
In addition to the scriptures Drummer mentioned, don't forget Eph 5:1-7. Laughter is good but mocking & foolish jesting isn't. :)

You know what, I had a discussion earlier this week with a colleague of mine who did see the play of Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and I mentioned how some people don't view the movie as Christian based, just like I suspect some people probably don't view the movie Woman, Thou Art Loosed, Christian based. And a valid point was brought up in the discussion: we need to stop acting like all of us Christians were born as white as snow and as pure all our lives, we weren't, that's why we need Jesus, and even then we STILL are not perfect!
Both movies (Woman, Thou Art Loosed, Diary of a Mad Black Woman) bring up real life issues: sexual abuse, infidelity that goes on in the real world, and even though I haven't seen both of them yet, from I have read about them, both use Christian themes of forgiveness, healing, moving beyond the pain and living your life.
And I need to get off my lazy butt and see those movies! (LOL!!! :D )

I think you missed the point in my statement whether or not the movie is Christian-based. Being born again doesn't mean we are perfect, yet Jesus himself said to be perfect as HE is perfect [finished, muture, fully grown] (Matt. 5:48). So we are/should be striving toward perfection; to please Christ, not man. Perfection or being freed from a thing doesn't mean we are proudful or untouchable. When Jesus walked the earth he was perfect but yet was touched by man's infirmities. I think he is coming for church withouth spot, wrinkle or any such thing.

amen ladybass, well said. unfortunately we seem 2 be waisting our time talking about this. every1 seems 2 be looking 4 justification and are missing the point thats being said....oh i know what it is......were not reading the same bible. lol i think u and i have foreign bibles. yeah thats it thats the problem. lol :D

Father God in the name of Jesus, I come before you right now asking your touch the minds and hearts of your people. Lord, we speak blessings for my Perry because he didnt forget how you have made a way for him, even when he almost gave up on stageplays, u didnt let it be! And we say thankyou. Lord, whatever is not like you i ask that you deliver his mind, body, and soul. Help him bring more people to you GOD!!! Not for Madea's glory, Not for Tyler's glory, but for your glory! Even as he is searching for his soul mate, God we ask that you would lead and guide him. Help him be the man of God that you are calling for in these last and evil days. And most of ALl god we ask that you would help us not to judge him but pray for him that would would open his eyes even the more that more souls would be brought to you... In the name of JESUS we pray, AMEN!
