Title: God bless! Voicing Help?
Post by: Junior88Keyz on October 19, 2012, 01:39:26 AM
Hey God bless you all. I'm having a little trouble incorporating chords to make em sound phat. I play with my left and right for example in C major i'd play a 1 and 5 on my LH and a Csus2 on my right hand, But I want to make my chords feel phat and richer. If ya'll could help me find a thread or video or even audio i'd be greatly blessed and I'm sure God will bless ya'll too!

I don't have any links at the moment but I can tell you a lot of the "phat" voicings come from extensions(9ths, 11ths, 13ths) and alterations(#5ths, b13ths, etc.).

One good source I've used is Jamal Hartwell's videos. Here's his channel https://www.youtube.com/user/GospelMusicians (https://www.youtube.com/user/GospelMusicians). I've bought one of his dvds as well which helped me quite a bit.

Also Mike Bereal and Jason White's dvds and videos helped. Along with the other videos from Hear and Play Music. I bought one from both Bereal and White they catapulted my playing to a much higher level. However the chords they show are rootless so if you don't have a bass player you'll have to modify them. This is their channel https://www.youtube.com/user/hearandplay (https://www.youtube.com/user/hearandplay)

If need be I could post a progression or two I play and explain the theory behind them but I'm sure there are some members who have been around a while that know of and have written threads that already do that.

...a lot of the extended Jazz 'phat' chord voicings are rootless, and have stacked 4ths...
