I would practice the major and minor scale's everyday and in every key!

I agree. I would listen to an audio file of those scales and learn them by ear. Also, listen to music in general and try to pick out the basslines. Learning to read music and knowing your fretboard is good but I personally feel, nothing beats a great ear!!

When I first started playing, someone told me, "If you can hum it, you can play it". Start to hum riffs, basslines, etc when listening to music. When you actually have your instrument in your hand, try to play out what you hum. It also will help you a ton if you learn your music theory so that you can have something to associate movements you hear and familiar riffs. For instance, you will know what a 7-3-6 or 5-1-4 movement sounds like. It is tedious but in the long run will pay off and can help your creativity

I need help with a practice exercise/drill with interval(s) recognition in major and minor scales. My ear is very, very weak in this area. I have been bless to be place at a church to play my bass every Sunday, but seems like every Sunday during service, my pastor wants to hear a song that he is f-e-e-l-i-n-g at that moment, sings a few words of the song, looks at the keyboard/organists, it takes him only a few seconds to find the right key, and begins playing the song. I'm stumbling to find the first note of the key of the song, and the keyboard/organists can't tell me because of the distance between us and the drummer playing loud. Its very frustrating to stay the least from week to week. Help please!!.. ?/?

If your key or organ player is friendly, will they throw up fingers using a "C" scale? C=1, D=2, etc. For flats, show fingers, fold then thumb. If they held up or If they showed two fingers, then folded and then a thumb, you would know that they were playing in Db. If two fingers, D. Ab would be 5 then 1 then a thumb. A full hand would be a G. What would a full hand, fold and then a thumb be?
Until you got familiar with picking up keys.

takes a while to develop an ear keep working at it!

Thanks berbie for your post. Yes the key/organists is friendly and we will work on this hand signal/finger(s) suggestion at our next practice.

You could also try to keep the volume extremely low at the beginning of the song to give you time to fumble for the key.

I'm real new to playing the bass our church just has a piano in I just got the bass she just plays in gfd in sometimes e how do I no what to lesson for to play with her on her keys in do u just play the bass with some of the song or play each key she does

Welcome to LGM. Hopefully they tell you what songs would be sung before choir rehearsal. You can look it up on YouTube and try to play it. Try to learn the basic note of the song in every key so if she changes the key you can still play. If you all do not have choir rehearsal you should record the music part of the service then take it back home to learn.
