I think it's either the Nord 2 or the (don't laugh) Casio 3500. I think that casio is somewhere in the picture because, you can create your own drawbar sounds. Evan though there is alot of keyboards that can do that it's something about that casio when you takeit through a guitar effects pedal from the simulated leslie sound then take it through a full sound system. I think Casio (for some odd reason) has outdone themselves with that keyboard.

Are you speaking of general keyboards? or are the CX3, XK2/3, and Roland BK organs out?

I'm referring to any Keyboard, but even the three I mentioned above, I just want the opinion of expert Organ Playas.

I've tried some of those casio keyboards, and they are the most authentic that I've heard. But then I've heard some samples of the Motif on the Yamaha website. Comon somebody!! I might just have to buy an original Hammond, but if I can get away with it I will.

If you're going for strictly Hammond sounds, you can't beat a vintage Hammond organ.

B3s are certainly the most expensive, but C3s are a little less, but the SAME instrument.  An A 100 is the same as a B3 and C3.  It has internal speakers, but does have a speaker out connection and is less expensive than the B and C.

One organ that I don't hear too much about is the E-111.  You can get one of these for less than 1000 dollars.  This was my 1st Hammond, and I traded it to a studio for recording time.  They were made in the late 60s, and should not be confused with the prewar Model E, which is another kind of organ all together....

Drawbacks-cheesy percussion, one set of drawbars per manual, does not have the left hand keyboard presets, but these annoying tabs, and top heavy-becareful when moving, also has the 'diving board' keys rather than the 'waterfall keys that most other Hammonds have.

Pros-has great chorus and vibrato, reverb, cost, internals and sound is the same as a B3, full size pedals.   B3 percussion is available from Trek, and this percussion system adds volume control to percussion at your console rather than just loud or soft.

If you're looking for a smaller unit, the Hammond XK3 is really where it's at.  The features are incredible.  Did you know the key click on the new Hammond organs is not synthesized, but is actually key clicks caused by the contacts for each of the drawbars?  Thats just like the original Hammonds are.  The XK3 also has the same kind of presets the b3 has, the flipped keys.  The panel on the Xk3 is very close to the real thing.  Two of these stacked would look like a real organ.  That's my dream set up.

The biggest advantage the Nord electro has over the xk3 is that the nord has a lot of vintage keyboard sounds besides the Hammond.  Some people might be put off by the drawbar situation on the Nord, but after having spent some time with it, I really like it-check it out and see what you think.  Also, additional Nord sounds are downloadable from Nord'a website directly to the Nord.

My organ teacher, david brock, told me that the hammonds organs are the king... of all the music and if thats not true alot of people aren't telling the truth.  Lots of musicians can't afford the "king".  So, my next thing would be is a similar sound.

Well we've established that nothing is like a real Hammond with a leslie. However I know you're asking about what comes the closest to the real thing. In my opinion, next to the nord electro, it would have to be the VK-8\VK-8M. The problem I have with the nord is you can't edit any parameters whatsoever. So what you hear is what you get basically. Also I noticed the tremolo is a little heavy on the upper notes. I listened to several demo's of the VK-8/8M and I was very impressed with overall tone. I also liked the leslie sim. You can also edit the parameters to match your taste. Plus I prefer having real drawbars. Just make sure if you have one of these units that you're using version 2.0 because that fixes the leslie sim issue that they had with 1.0. I'm buying the VK-8M (module version of the VK-8) and using it with my Casio WK-3500.

And XK-3 and a leslie, I'd be in heaven. That internal leslie though. I just didn't care for it.

Well C3hamby, see what is coming mid-May 2005 .  It is the sweetest set up I have ever seen for a XK-3.  Seen it in Keyboard Magazine April 2005 issue.
Check it out at:  www.hammondorganco.com

I'm sure it will be expensive, but probably less then a B3 portable. (15,000)

Hook this little baby up to a new 122 leslie and you will be so close to a B3 it wouldn't be worth breaking your back to take one on the road.

As far as keyboards or synths(ones that aren't portable organs)  I'd have to say the Triton Extreme has excellent organs try the patch called "cx-3 chorale" (my favorite) or I'd recommend the Nord electro.

I play my XK3 through powered studio monitors. The amp or speaker is just as important as the board itself. A casio can sound passible through a real leslie. So the leslie simulator on the XK3 is not bad through my biased ears.

I appreciate yall's opinions up in this forum. This is good "preaching" in here. Deffinately keep this section posted for any updates, anything new. Never the less, there will be nothin, and I mean nothin that can ever replace a gracious Hammond Organ. Peace!
Be Blessed!

I wasn't aware of that organ, but yeah, that is what Hammond has needed for a long time.  Thanks for passing that along.  I can't imagine why Hammond would think someone would pay 15,000 for a brand new organ, plus up to $2000 for a new Leslie, when a very nice vintage Hammond/Leslie can be purchased for $5000-6000.  Thank God that they are starting to respond more reasonably.

Roland has come a long way.  I didn't like their older organs.  I don't have a lot of time in with their new stuff, but I do know a church in town that compared the new B3 with the comparable Roland unit-it too has the same preset and drawbar set up as the Hammond.  They compared them using one of the new Leslie speakers.

In their opinion, where money was no object, they chose the Roland unit.

I'm buying a Roland VK-8M from a guy I know. I should have it about this time in 2 weeks. I've listened to several demo's and I was quite impressed with the sound. The leslie sim sounds great too. So I know I'll be happy with it. Later I plan to buy an expression pedal and a pedalboard for bass.

I know its an organ, but the Diversi is SUPER CLOSE.  In fact, not too many people can tell the difference if its ran through a Leslie Speaker.  now dont get me wrong, I would always take a nice B3 any day, but the Diversi comes Very Very Very close to the real thing.  But the B3 is a kingdom.  Everyone else is just Dukes

I will put a second vote in for the Kurzweil PC2X,

I've been using the KB3 mode on this beast and now I'm not in search a hurry to get a B3 clone.  Its certainly cutting it.

Okay, I've seen the specs on the Roland Organ, and I have to say that it looks and sounds sweet. But between the Roland and Hammond Digital, which one?
