We really want to get our choir back going but we have such a small church. How would you go about it?
-
I'm not an authority figure on the topic but I'd start small and strong then watch that seed grow.

I am also not an authority, LOL... but I would say if you could get a good strong ensemble going, that would be a good place to start. Maybe two of each part? Or maybe even one real good voice on each part. My FL directs our choir, and one thing she does is have one good solid singer in each section sing in the mic, that way it guides everyone else, and what's heard by the congregation sounds good. Our choir recently went through a transition (that's what they say when a lot of people left, lol), and basically we were able to maintain a small core, and now we are on our way back with mostly new people. I pray it all goes well for you!

Thank you! We are starting back up and I am definitely going to use your advice:)

The struggle is real

You have to start somewhere. Even if it's just one voice part each, get with people who want to sing. Once you get willing participants, just train them slowly. It took us a good year and a half to really train our choir to do what they're doing now, and we only have about 8 or 9 faithful members.
Make sure to have regular rehearsals so that they don't forget what they learned. After a while, you will see your choir start to grow.

WILLING participants. #thatisall

I agree. Willing is huge. At my church a lot of the capable sit in the audience. But our leader was willing to work with the willing, and it's surprising what people have in them that just needs development. I even led my first song a few months back.
