Title: Playing boards/piano in a band vs. alone
Post by: ifiwereu on March 26, 2016, 03:13:44 PM
How do you play differently when playing keyboards and piano with a band? I know in jazz the left hand plays walking bass and roots etc. However, in a band the bass is playing the bass lines and roots and the keyboard or pianist plays voicings. So how does a keyboard or pianist play when playing with a band? I ask this question because some of the older players need to economize with the left hand in a band. Then there are younger players who play with a bass player and are handicapped when they have to play by themselves. Some guys even play chords with their left hand. Of course left hand chords do not work on every song or is there a technique where chording with the left hand can work on every song? Your thoughts?

One thing you can do is learn B3 organ. Over the years, that has really helped my rootless playing. The more my foot got trained, the better I sounded. Not sure where you are musically. Maybe you can post a couple of videos,,
