Title: CHOPS/IDEAS TRADE!
Post by: dallan855 on February 09, 2006, 11:26:41 AM
Hey LGM people! This is my first post so I'd like to introduce myself - I'm David, I'm from the UK living just outside East London. I've been playing for about 2 years (properly) now and I look forward to sharing with and learning from you guys. Oh, and most importantly, I've been a Christian for about a year and a half.

Anyways, I've been getting lessons and I think it would be cool to exchange musical ideas on here, grooves, licks, whatever. Especially stuff which people can take away, work on and make their own.

So here's the first thing I have to offer...

Its nothing revolutionary or anything, but its a way of developing some nice linear phrasing ideas and gives them a nice feel. It basicly works by passing everything from hand to hand. So...

Single Stroke Roll:       R   +   L   =   RLRLRLRL...

The Classic:                RLF, added then to LRF   =   RLFLRFRLFLRF...

A Favourite:                RF  +  LF   =   RFLFRFLFRFLF...

Then you can go on to do anything with this eg:

RLFLRFRF   +   LRFRLFLF   =   RLFLRFRFLRFRLFLF...

And you can practise these patterns as triplets, straight quavers, 5s, 6s, 7s etc.

And the way to practise this is as follows:

- Start slow

- Practise each handed lead individually first (eg. RLRF then LRLF)

- Start on the snare, then move only the right hand around the kit, then the left, then both.

- Aim for ease of motion and accuracy, not speed. Practising slow for a long time is how you get the movements and patterns into your muscle memory.

- Don't use a click at first. Get the movement down before you nail the time, you can't practise two things at once.

I hope this is of some use to somebody, get posting people!

David.
