Im a young bass player & I am having a difficult transition to read and play at the same time and I need to know how , becasue I cant move on in my classes if I dont get this. Please Helpppppppp

This may sound silly and remedial... but:
1.) MEMORIZE the musical alphabet forwards, but more importantly backwards, until it is second nature to you.
2.) MEMORIZE the bass Clef. Dedicate the Lines to memory... until you don't have to think twice what the lines and the spaces are on the staff.
3.) MEMORIZE the First 5 Frets and Open Note on Each String.
The later two can be achieved by making excercises for yourself, work one string at a time...
Write out the the Notes on a blank Staff(Start with one String)Write out all the notes for that string in random patterns, and play along with the notes as you sight read them. Then work your way through all the strings.
Sight reading Music, is much like learning to read the English Language, you practice and practice, and then certain phrases and terms are committed to memory before you know it... When you first started reading at school, you had to sound everything out...but before long you don't even have to think about how the sounds work together, you simply memorize whole words.

What? this doesn't seem fair that you can't move on, can you explain not moving on?
To me this is one of the most hardest thing about music. It's like reading a whole new language

I just started learning to read and it is challenging. I just put in lots of practice time and I'm noticing I am getting better at seeing a note and playing it at the same time. I'm sure you know the spaces are ACEG (All Cows Eat Grass) and the Lines are GBDFA (Good Boys Do Fine Always)
I would aslo like to know why you can't move on? How often are your classes?

Miss V, I ve been playin g since June 3rd last year, and I its a agreement I made with my teacher and do to my progress he decided that i should be able to teach by the end of this year.

I learned to read back in high school. I was playing bass by ear and wanted to play in the high school pep band. The music teacher gave me a tuba and a book to take home during the summer and said "learn it".
I did, so it just takes dedication and lots of practice, but you will do it.

i play by ear and now in the last few months i've been learning to read. i played trumpet in middle school (25yrs ago) and i learned treble clef, which is different from bass. just to remind myself G on the treble clef is a B on the bass clef while practicing my bass took some time. I try to practices reading everyday now even if it's 15mins a day. I catch myself giving up during practice. my mind starts wonder when i get stuck, then i start jamming. i had to stop myself and refocus. things are starting to click me now. I used to play trumpet to, but now I'm still learning to read music for bass and my only obstacle is remembering where my fingers go with out looking at the neck while paying attention to the music. With my trumpet I only had one fingering for one note within an octave but with guitar you can go anywhere on the neck for the same note. I used to get lost and confused while reading music and playing it on the bass but now with just the first five frets of each string memorized I can play easier, now beyond the five frets its all patterns and shapes for me...
