Good post ddw4e. This is needed because sometimes the poster doesnt realize their post could be confusing to others. Good format. ;D

Nice explaination...

seems simple , i might as well head to it...

I guess I still remain dumbfounded. Music occurs in time. I can't follow the time when the sound begins and ends.
The song begins at some time and ends at some time the time is not measured out with this system. You pre suppose the reader knows the sound recording. How is it counted? How is the beat diviided, or subdivided?
I can follow Left hand slash Right hand and the voicing from bottom to top or top to bottom, but when does the chord start and when does it end. I have no reference. Where are the words? The words would give me some kind of reference.
-
why dont people start naming the chords. i know everyone doesnt know how to read music perfectly,(including me) but it is good to start knowing chords. ya know

Nice format dd...............thanks

Yeah, with this method, you have to have heard the song first and have a good feel for it. You would not be able to learn the song if you were given only the chords as written above, a quiet room and a piano. However, think about it: there's no efficient way to use pure text to post standard sheet music with time signatures.
It's just a different method that seems to work for a lot of folks on this site. Some of these cats on here can really jam, and they use this method of chording to learn and teach songs. Thus, when in Rome...

I agree with you, in part benjimatt. It would be a great learning tool to start naming chords, however at the same time we have to take into account that some of the readers do not know chords names at this point in their playing. (We all have been there) so why dont we do both?

Ab/ C- Eb - Ab (AbMaj 1st inversion)
It would help both the "novice" player, as well as cut down the reading time for the "more advanced" player.

Thanks for consideration, that's so true.

yeah it really would cut down some time lol. ANd i like how you said ab maj 1st inversion. knowing those inversions really help.

2. The Conventional Way from a web site that I cannot quite recall the URL
In The Sanctuary - Kurt Carr Bass is on the Right of the slash
Verse:
Cm Ab/F Bb Eb
We lift our hands in the sanctuary.
Cm Ab/F Bb Eb
We lift our hands to give you the glory.
Cm Ab/F Bb Eb Bb/D Cm
We lift our hands to give you the pra-a-ise,
Ab/F Bb Eb Bb/D Cm
and we will praise you for the rest of our d-a-a-ys.
Ab/F Bb Eb
Yes, we will praise you for the rest of our days.
(We clap our hands...)
(We sing our song...)
(Hallelujah in the...)
Ab Eb Bb Eb
Jesus, we give you the praise.
Ab Eb Bb Eb
Emmanuel, we lift up your name.
Db Ab Bb B Cm
Heavenly Father, coming Me-ss-iah,
Ab/F Bb Eb
We will praise you for the rest of our days.
Cm Ab/F Bb Eb
Yes, we will praise you for the rest of our days.
Of course, I will choose No. 2 every time. Who wouldn't? It is simple, methodical and logical to read and I was playing and singing the song in less than 10 minutes. The No. 1 looks very busy, too busy in fact, and as you said it is for the cats who can really jam. If you want to play and sing as well, No. 1 is not easy to do.
But one can always convert chords/notes from the No. 1 type to the No. 2 type, manually as one wishes.

Nice explaination...
This is just to say kudos to the Administrator of this site -- 4hisglory. He is really on top of the situation on this site. I wrote a response yesterday to How to chord Songs. 4his glory has responded promptly today with the article named below where two chord types are also delineated. Please read the article:
•Understanding Gospel Chord Chart by 4hisglory - 2006-09-04

My Two Euros... (I am included in this group)
This site has fostered a new generation of musicians that read music according to the LH/RH not the traditional Ab/F. Yes some might not like it however it's now a reality. More and more of our musicans... exp. KB players are learning not from the traditional school of music more so from the "how do I play this// where do I place my hands".
Some might say that you/we are limited from not knowing the traditional way of music while others can say--hey, if you show me I can play it. I once was in a Church and the KB Player was school trained (and the brother was gifted). However, this same cat could not play without sheet music... So again I feel~~Urban Gospel music has an offical stamp called RH/LH...
Your thoughts...

I am really going by what helps me learn fastest. And the quick traditional RH/LH and C/E method helps me best. I bring songs (that could be rendered on piano) on a CD and we go through each one by one, sometimes spending 2-3 weeks on one. He is Choir Director at a Church also. He can teach some of the Gospel songs to his choir. So we are helping each other.
I am burning a CD now with some of these songs whose musical styles I would like to perfect on the keyboard: Selah-- Bless the Broken Road; Kelly Clarkson-- Because of You; Joe Pace-- I will Bless the Lord at all times and O Clap your hands; Kurt Carr-- We Offer you Praise; Rihanna-- Unfaithful; DeAndre Patterson-- Give Him Glory, Tonex-- God Has Not 4got
Definitely he is going to break the chords down in the traditional way because he has a quite number of students and I spend about half an hour to 45 minutes. A good thing also is that he teaches getting the beat/rhythm and pacing right since we listen to the songs together.
In conclusion, this is all about learning as many chord combinations as possible in as little a time as possible. I don't want to become a perpetual student. Everyone should go with what works best for them.

I'd just like to say that, in whatever format you present it, I'm thankful that you take the time out of your schedule to help others by posting chords (this applies to everyone that posts chords). Sure, I favor one format over another, but I'm thankful regardless of the format. AND, I hope to contribute in the near future with chords of my own.

I can only confirm it seems to be great...
I am on this website and for the moment I cannot find how to translate the letters on my piano... Sorry I'm French and your metod to learn seems great to learn to play... but how can I know where is A or B or C on my piano.
I really need the first first first basis...

I agree that a simple chord chart is always easier to read, but it kinda reminds me of the debate about the differences in chord charts and sheet music. Some people feel as though it is easier to read a score than it is to read a chord chart. I would normally laugh at that suggestion, but if you think about it, whatever works best for you is what you should go with.

wow, Are those chords even right on the 1st part???
I tried to play it left to right or right to left, and all I can get is a bunch of muddy chords!!
is there a page where it explains how to read the way you wrote the first chord chart??
-
I agree also with Mewsik Harris. I recall the first time I saw someone write out the chords of "The Blessings Of Abraham" I found myself frustrated when it was fully written out note for note.... so I had to just figure out the basic chord structure and put it into lead sheet/fake book form. Too bad there is no easy way to write a form of piano tabulature. I have found one book that does have piano tabulature (found it at the local goodwill and it is quite old). BTW Some folks turn the music over 90' to the right but that gets me too dizzy also. ::)
For myself I just need the lyrics and the chord name atop of the words where the chord changes and I can go to town from there almost instantly; write it out LH/RH and to be honest I find myself doing too much looking at the page instead of playing the music. :-[
I just think in the end it is better to learn how to build the chords; a little bit of music theory never hurts when it comes to being able to transcribe a section of music. So perhaps consider putting the chord names in also in paranthesis for those of us who understand chord building.
I just found the forums yesterday; I want to say thanks for being here to all good people here. I am looking forward to learning from the forums here. :)
I agree with you, in part benjimatt. It would be a great learning tool to start naming chords, however at the same time we have to take into account that some of the readers do not know chords names at this point in their playing. (We all have been there) so why dont we do both?

LH/RH
Ab/ C- Eb - Ab (AbMaj 1st inversion)
It would help both the "novice" player, as well as cut down the reading time for the "more advanced" player.
Nah mean?lol

I'm obviously doing something wrong. These cords don't sound right. need more help. :o

You have made my day. Naming the chord really helps especially when my $6.00 chart is on the wall. LOL
