Hi All,
Some great bassists mentioned: Abe, Stan, Louis & Jaco - I'd like to add my bit from the European end!
Mark King - Brit bass supremo! Don't be distracted by the 80s pop he did with Level 42 - check out his amazing solo album "Influences" (avail on Amazon!).
Pino Palladino - Fretless Fanatic
And not to leave the yanks out...
Tommy Simms - not just great songwriter/producer (Change Your World, Eric Clapton) the most beautiful melodic bass lines...
And finally...
Randy Hope-Taylor (Incognito) - Great all round funkster...
Personal #1 must be Abe for sheer innovation & explosive joy!

My Favorite Bass players: Tony Levin, Anthony Jackson, Gary Willis and Bunny Brunell. If you guys have not heard Willis and Brunell, you have are missing out on 2 of the rawest cats in the world right now. Also, there is a cat in japan named Tetsuo Sakuri (Straight Sick Wit IT!!!)

This guy had to be mentioned alone. Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets is an incredible player. He has great touch, feel, and taste. The yellowjackets are my favorite band in the world. I would not be into music had they not inspired me. Each player in the band are my personal favs on their respective instruments.
-
Can't believe that nobody mentioned Bernard Edwards yet, from Chic & Sister Sledge days. Not as great a technician as some of the others mentioned, but MAN that guy had the best feel around!
Also, don't think anybody mentioned Bootsy Collins - another great innovator from James Brown/Parliament/Funkadelic era.
-
My favorite bassist is my cousin Simeon Baker. (Check out his resume at www.artistdirect.com) He is as funky as they come! I am a female who is new to the bass...pray fa me! :D
-
All of the aforementioned bass players are awesome.
However I am shocked that I have not seen my favorite bass player mentioned. That is none other than REGGIE YOUNG, the NYC area bass player who is featured on albums by James Hall, Bishop Eric McDaniel, and Hezekiah Walker. He has also been featured at the National Baptist Convention as well.
This man is BADDDD!! His fingers seem to move 100 mph! Reggie Young is one of the baddest bass players ever!
-
Andrew Gouche'

I encourage you all to listen to Maynard Ferguson, any of his bass players that he uses is so sick you would think they have a cold. It is awesome, although he is jazz i am truly blessed by his music. He is a trumpet player and one of the best, there is no joking around with him. I encourage songs such as:
Chameleon
Hit in the Head
Admirals Horn
Gospel John
Birdland
Those ones to get started
Oh and Jaco Pastorius he is the greatest bass player that ever lived, though he is very dead, HE WAS VERY GOOD
Be blessed

Has anyone ever heard Kirk Franklins bass player Keith Taylor. He is sick and kills that smith 6 string on intro to "Love" off of the Gods property album. I also am a fan of Pino Paladino and Braylon Lacy badu's current bass player.

-
As far as gospel bassists go I think everyone has mentioned some serious players. However, only a handful of gospel bassist have amazingly graced the pages of Bass Player Magazine. As far as I know only Joel Smith, Maurice Fitzgerald & Bryant Wilder have had articles written about them or their music. I think, but I'm not sure, Andrew Gouche has been written about in BP. I was actually quite surprised that unitl this post no one has mentioned B. Wilder, his band and his gospel/funk/jazz CD are crazy. He's one of my favorites, the others are Anthony Jackson and Mark King. Oh, BTW Alicia Keys' bassist's name is Rufus Jackson--good player.
 [/b]
-
I htought Alecia keys bassist was Steven Rodriguez.. He is endorsed by Warwick ... i may be wrong but im pretty sure of it.
-
Yep, my bad. Rufus Jackson had the gig first. Good job.
-
i cant believe no1 said mark king of level 42. he lead sings and plays punchy bass lines. he and flea are the best hands down.
-
I think tha Victor Wooten is the sickest bass player to me. I have seen him play and i have never heard nothing like it.

I listen to so many types of music it's very hard to break it down to one!
There are lots of bass players that I admire for different reasons, but the guy who inspired me the most and made pick up the bass in the first place was Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth, Space Cowboy, Travelling Without Moving). Very over looked and under rated musician, IMHO. That guy really understood the concept of 'Groove' and has a style all of his own. Techncially brilliant, excellent performer and had an awesome bass tone! Very expressional and sensitive player. Never took his abilities to the point where he over played or over shadowed his band. For me, the true meaning of why a bass player should always be turned up in the mix! If you haven't already, I would really recommend listening to the 'Emergency on Planet Earth' and 'Travelling Without Moving' albums especially. Staurt was only 18-19yrs old when he appeared on the 'Emergency on Planet Earth' record!! When you listen to it I think you will agree his lines are truly inspiring!
He left the band several years ago for personal reasons and my heart was broken! :'( Jamiroquai have had great session players since then, but now they sound like a post disco / pop act. You can really notice the difference between the albums he performed on and the preceeding albums recorded without him.
Stuart Zender was the guy that inspired me to pick up bass as my main instrument. Not necessarily my favorite bass player, but definately the most important for that reason.
-
Anthony Jackson
Victor Wooten
Stuart Hamm
Flea
Billy Sheeshan
John Patituchi

My favorites have been mentioned numerous times already.
However since I'm from Detroit, I have to give a shout to the Funk Brother who laid the foundation and made the bass come alive. The legendary Mr. James Jamerson. "Dirt keeps the funk." 8)

-
I'm a toddler on bass. I have too many right now...
I consider myself to be in the 2nd grade of playing the bass, but I can read at a 3rd grade level.
-
I'm spinnin' a lot of Marcus Miller right now. Maybe cause I'm working on my slap but... I'm not sure if I have a favorite...I listen to everyone I can. I guess the style closest to what I would like to develop is Adam Nitti.
