Hey what do you guys do when you start rehearsal?
Some do scales
Others do "Jesus I Love You With All My Heart and Soul" in 3 part harmony
Others do a simple congregational song (i.e. "I Love You Lord")
Just curious. Perhaps some people who read this post will try some new things in rehearsal.
God Bless :)
-
A lot of people do "I Exalt Thee." Its pretty well known and is versatile as far as harmony is concerned...
-
It varies at our gatherings. Whatever the Lord leads.
-
Do you guys have a "method to you madness"? Meaning is there a reason you sing a particular song ( ear training, range, etc).
-
I use a fairly new song by Jarion Hamm entitled "We Enter Your Gates". He is the minister of music at Bishop Dennis Leonard's church in Denver and a personal friend.
I do that song because it has a good mix of scales, unison and harmony.
It's also a song with a good message that will help them to focus on rehearsal and not on what they went through to GET to rehearsal.
If you would like to hear the song, I have the file saved on my computer.

to answer the original question
other then the the mah me may mo moo
I have them do all the vowels
starting on the tonic up to the fifth and sldie down to the tonic leap up to the fifth and slide down to the tonic again
we modulate maybe two octaves
and change vowels every other modulation
I also have them sing sol fege syllables
and various scale patterns
oh yeah i open up with a breathing exercise
take a deep breath
close your mouth until only a small tiny teeny weeny little hole is left and exhale hard
through the small aperture it makes a noise but it strenghtnens the diaphragm
God Bless

I guess I might as well ask for this vastly popular song as well.

Could ya 'splain that in English?
Lyric you ,must be funnin (playin)
but in case you arent
mah me may mo moo is a warm up that you sing on each note of the chromatic scale
so you sing mah me may mo moo on C
then on C# then on D and D# then on E then F
and so on until you cant go anymore
the sol fege syllables are
the diatonic scale (The major scale)
Do Re mi fa sol la ti do
by training my choirs on these i get them to be able to recognize intervals
the up a fifth slide down to the root
is
sing Do
then sing Sol (up a fifth)
then slide down to Do
and leap back up to sol then slide down to do
do this not singing sol and do but each vowel\
if you were at your keyboard
you could start it out like this
C G (GFEdc quickly_ C G )GFEDC
Then modullate
C# AB AbGBFEBC# C# AB AB,Gb,F,EB,Db
so i would start out on Ah
then Ay
then oh
then ooooh
then eeee
then repeat
as they go up everyother modulation i change vowels
I hope this helps

can I be down too? What usually used is a song called "Hallelujah" has very little words and is very worshipful, it modulates from C on up to Gb, great warm-up song but more importantly it ushers in the presence of the Lord, peace!
