Title: Rules and regulations
Post by: agape316 on February 27, 2007, 11:29:02 AM
Greetings all this is my first post, I'm the music director at a small church in Brooklyn. I've noticed many posts about the struggles of choir directors, M.O.M's etc. I've fairly recently taken over our church's choir and I'm wondering if people have examples of general guidelines - rules and regulations - about conduct, etc. that have proven effective with keeping choir rehearsals flowing smoothly. I'm not having much trouble right now, praise God! But I'd like to try and be clear about things from the outset - know what I mean.
If you've already covered this topic, please forgive.
Grace and peace to all the psalmists!
Aimee

Welcome agape316,

These are not rules, as much as they are suggestions....but, here goes:

1.  Suggestions for song selections are to be submitted to the director...but the final choice is up to the discretion of the director.
*(get that one straight immediately, or there will be a struggle between members, musicians, and the director.)

2.  If you don't rehearse....you don't sing or play!

3.  Musicians should (if at all possible) master the selections BEFORE mass choir rehearsal.

4.  All members will learn and pay attention to the "hand signals", typically used by most choir directors.

5.  When the director says "CUT" (in rehearsal)....E V E R Y T H I N G  stops........music, singing, talking, everything.
*(this will cut down on the rehearsal time)

6.  No person will deviate from the way a selection was rehearsed....ie: no impromptu solos or vamps.

7.  Everyone will move as a unit.  It is a choir, and not a collection of INDIVIDUALS. (there's a difference)

8.  If your not led to be in the choir (....only there out of habit, or to boost numbers) we respectfully ask you to enjoy the service in a congregational capacity!!!

Go to this site....

www.northway.org (http://www.northway.org)

Go to the worship 501 section on the left hand side. That Worship Pastor has got it TOGETHER!

He does workshops with Seminars4worship ( www.seminars4worship.com (http://www.seminars4worship.com)) and he has his how he does his thang on there. Go to Conference resouces and he has a pdf file called Worship Team Values and Worship Team Covenant. As a matter a fact here it is just click on the link.

http://www.northway.org/nwccweb/pages/WattsResources/worship%20leadership%20team%20values.pdf  (http://www.northway.org/nwccweb/pages/WattsResources/worship%20leadership%20team%20values.pdf)

http://www.northway.org/nwccweb/pages/WattsResources/worship%20leadership%20team%20covenant.pdf (http://www.northway.org/nwccweb/pages/WattsResources/worship%20leadership%20team%20covenant.pdf)

He had his choir members get together and make the covenant so a lot of the mess that comes up in this area are avoided. But when it does come up, all he has to do is pull out this covenant that everyone in his choir agreed to...

He left it up for people just like us who from time to time need to an example to copy and paste or to modify to fit our needs. He gave us his blessings to use it as we see fit.

I hope you can use it...

Worship Leadership Team Covenant
North Way Community Church Worship Ministries
In addition to the guidelines created by the 501 Worship staff for membership on
one of North Way’s Worship Leadership Teams, the team members themselves
have created and agreed to follow a list of values that they believe to be
important as it relates to our ability to function as a healthy team of leaders.
From the comments they shared, a list of covenant statements has been created
below. Our goal would be that each of us would commit and uphold these values
in order to protect the health and spirit of our team body.
As a member of the Worship Leadership Team I covenant and uphold the
purposes of the team by:
1) Holding my gifts loosely and not comparing myself, my gifts, my abilities or my opportunities
to serve to that of other members on the team. (Psalm 123:2) (I Corinthians 12:22-25)
2) Taking the personal responsibility to regularly prepare myself spiritually to be the most
effective worship leader I can be outside of rehearsals and services. (2 Corinthians 8:5)
3) Remaining open to input and guidance from my leaders and teammates. (Hebrews 13:17)
4) Cultivating a lifestyle outside of the church that represents Christ’s principals and values.
(1 Corinthians 10:31)
5) Demonstrating respect to my teammates by coming to rehearsals prepared and on time on
the dates I am scheduled. (Philippians 2:2)
6) Eliminating gossip or disparaging conversations about my teammates or leaders and caring
enough to confront when I feel I have been wronged. (Eph 4:3) Psalm 133:1) (Matt. 18:15)
(I Thess. 5:11) I Corinthians 12:26)
7) Carry the attitude of patience and encouragement with all of my teammates no matter where
they are in their development and gift strength. (I Corinthians 12:26) (Hebrews 10:24)
(I Corinthians 12:26) (Proverbs 3:27)
8) Carrying myself with an attitude of humility and honor no matter what my position or
opportunities may be on the team. (1 Chron. Chapter 22)

You can also go to www.earnestandroline.com (http://www.earnestandroline.com)

The stuff right there might be easier to get through. I may still have a copy of the guidelines that I used when I was MOM.

Anyway, welcome to LGM!!
