I've had a few people talk to me about him and I shruged him off like yeah whatever, and I saw the CD in best buy last night so I said whatever and bought it.

Lets just say that this might be one of my top 5 players!!!!!!!!!!

There's a guy on Bassgear.com selling the Tobias bass that Jimmy Haslip used on one of Anita Baker's albums.  Talk about a sweet bass with built in mojo....

Amazing player. I've been hip to him since the Yellowjackets first release. Even more amazing is he plays lefty with the strings setup for a righty!

a friend of mine BJ (he played with New direction for a little bit, and Lionel Richie) plays the same way.  I guess if you start out like that and don't know any better then its probably not a big deal, just hard for us use to the norm to get over though..lol

I saw him last year in Korea. He's sweet. I got quite a few of their CDs.

The weird thing is.....he doesn't know theory.

He plays by ear. He said so in a workshop he gave the day prior to the concert.

He sounds sooooo good for someone playing ONLY by ear.I also understand he's one of Thaddeus Tribbett's main influences.

I've been digging Jimmy for the last 25 years since the early  Gino Vinelli days ( a loonnnggg time ago ! ) and is one of the greatest phrasing you'll ever hear from a bass player IMHO,and this cd pales in comparison to all his earlier stuff he's done with the Yellow Jackets over the years

Sure thing .I' ll point you to a couple of cd's ( and mind you these are real early 90's were I thought Jimmy did some of his best playing, however it's still great stuff ).
1. Minage a trois ( pronounce twa ) it's actually thier 2nd lp , however it may be hard to find.

2. 4 Corners, and Politics: These were done in the early 90's but Jimmy did some incredible playing on these tracks.

3. Yellow Jackets " Live " mid 90's incredible cd and this is just to name a few,He also did some great playing on Lala Hathaways 1st cd . also as mention Anita Baker's album Sweet love ( which is pretty much the whole Yellow Jackets Band on that one )

If you go to youtube and punch in Chaka Khan4, there's some old video footage with Jimmy playing bass ( a Jazz Bass @ that which he still will pick up and play in his conventional or unconventional way ) on Ever Lasting Love which was a smoking track when Bobby Watson played bass on it on a earlier Rufus lp,nonetheless Jimmy is real nice and in-the-pocket on this one.

Also you have to remember that Jimmy has had the luxury of having stellar band mates to strecth with.especially the horn players such as Bob Mintzer, Bob Berg, Marc Russo ( not as stellar as the previous 2 I mention ahead of ,him  but still was good enough to get phrasing ideas off of .which imo is the best place to get your phrasing from...........vocalists and Horn players.

I hope this helps, feel free to email me anytime.
               God bless

Don't forget his 2 solo cd's, Arc and Red Heat! Red Heat, the better of the 2, is amazing. Latin oriented (Jimmy is Puertorican) and really groovin'!

Why is his Bass strung up like that?

The usual story is most guitars are built for right handed folks. He's left handed and and just flipped the guitar the other way and learned to play that way. Quite a few bassists learned to play that way.

One of my friends play like that, an upside down lefty bass player.  I hate the way he can ring those hi harmonics that's up and out-of-the-way and continue pounding the lows underneath while that hi is still ringing.  To me, some of the best players were/are upside down lefty players, like blues player Albert King.

It's not that they didn't know any better.  More than likely, it was the most feasible thing for them to do at the time when they learned to play.  There's not that many left-handed axes out there, especially for a youngster who's learning.

You think Jimmy Haslip is good, y'all need to hear Keith Horne. Jimmy doesn't slap much but Keith is a monster player (plays all styles) and I just don't know how he does it. I'd post a vid but as far as I know there are none available.

Oh, and to make matters worse, he's right handed and decided it was easier to play lefty-upside down! Go figure!

Oh yeah, Halsip is a bad boy. A partner of mine who actually played for New Direction also, plays guitar lefty, upside down. He said when he was young, they told him he couldn't do it. So he said he was determined to learn. Now has a pretty good resume under his belt. You think learning bass upside down is tough, try learning lead guitar. Its all in how bad you want it.
