Title: $2,500 For a Full Set Up. I need expert advice
Post by: Audiocr381ve on May 12, 2008, 05:03:15 PM
I was asked to put a set together for a student of mine. I'm talking hardware, cymbals, snare, drums, everything. I have $2,500 to spend, and I don't want to build upon a $2,500 set. I want a full set up ready to go.

I really don't keep up with the latest gear. I would really appreciate all the help/advice/opinions from the pros I could get. I know that brand names from the past that were frowned upon are coming up, I don't want to miss out. In the end, it comes down to auditioning the drums, but I want to narrow it down as far as possible. I want to buy everything new also. No cutting corners.

The application? I want to keep them at home to practice on.

Sound? No preference. I don't care what type of wood it is as long as it sounds good.

Size? Simple 5 piece. 10, 12, 14.

Snare? It must come with the set. I want it all matching! No size preference(if it were my personal choice you know I would hit up dunnett for this)

Hardware? I'd rather save money here than take away from the quality of the set.

Cymbals? Sabian fans?

Hey I know this takes a bit of time to add costs, so for all you who help, THANK YOU.

Memphis Drum Shop has a 5 piece new Pearl Visions VBX (100% birch) 5 -piece with free 8" tom on a black Pearl (non icon) rack with hardware (pedal, hi-hat, snare stand, 3 boom arms) for $1299. Spend the rest cymbals. The new Sabian XS20 performance pack or Meinl Mb20s will do them good. Even the Paiste Alpha pack if you don't want to go high-end pro. Of course you can get a Sabian AA or AAX performance pack for around $699.

Other kits I also suggest the new Yamaha Stage Custom birch kits or the Tama Superstar Hyperdrives. All $899-1200 for a 5 piece with snare included and hardware. Memphis Drum Shop has what you need and will ship anywhere. Drums2Go in Orlando will take care of you as well... With factory hardware include.

Call me for more direct advise. You've got my number.

Killer stuff guys. I'll look into it. I will post pics of what we end up going for. I'm really diggin on Sonor these days, that set up is right on J_kay and my student has enough money to cover any extra costs, trust me. Plus, my man Jojo is rockin those. Sabe, I will give you a call if something comes up dude. Thanks for the advice yamahaboy. I'll check into those cymbals.

Sonor's, IMHO, are definitely the way to go.

Sabe and j_kay gave great advice. Rich just quoted Sabe. lol. In my opinion, I think that it would be a better building ground to get him maybe fewer cymbals, but definitely pro level. Pro level hats, pro level ride and a pro level crash. I love Tama hardware some of the best out there. Pearl is great too. the kits mentioned are probably your best bet.

E.R. , I don't think I've ever lusted after a kit the way I just did yours.

Anyway, killer advice. I'm going with J_kays recommendations. I'm loving Sonor lately.

Now, I usually buy my kits from craigslist, ebay, whatever, but my student needs receipts and warranty's.

What is the best way to go about buying this stuff? I'm kind of skeptical on G.C. right now.

Sabe, are those guys you mentioned good for shipping stuff out?

Ay, I compiled this list along with these great prices at

http://www.massmusic.net

I've ordered from them before (actually, it was an $1,800.00 order), and they're stand up dudes.  Extremely reputable and service was outstanding.  I'd order from them again.

Ask for Andy.  He'll look out for you.

Glad that I could assist you...

Oh, and tell him to do a price match on the Tama HC73BWN Boom Stands.  They're $68.98 at interstatemusic.com.  Here is the page as proof: http://www.interstatemusic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10021&storeId=10051&productId=900035199&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=61440

When referencing a price match, use that page so that they'll honor it.

That should bring the order down slightly.

j_kay is the shopping king! I find one-of-a-kind deals mostly but j_kay is the price match super shopper, LOL.

As far as my guys... Yes, they do good shipping stuff anywhere... they are Five Star shops.

Seems as though j_kay has you covered. He turned me on to MassMusic and I must say their deals are supper nice.
