Hey Jay-
I'm a newbie. I just heard your youtube "shout to the lord" - Really great! I would like to learn how to embellish the chords- All I have is G emin C D (maybe you played in a different key). How did you know what to add? Do you have a chart you can share? I'll be accompanying a singer with this song on Sat., but would like to make the piano part more interesting. Your stuff is great. Thanks for sharing :D

In most songs, you can keep the melody note on top. This really allows you to explore more chords even if they are in a different key. As long as the chord you choose have the same top note as your melody line it can work. This usually is a trial and error so try different chords even if they are in a defferent key. Don't always worry about having to play a chord to match the bass of a song. Also try suspended forths ie (F-Bb-Eb - transpose this in all keys). If you use the top note in the melody as the top not in the suspended forth you can really come up with nice stuff. Will post All to Jesus using this same style soon.
Hope this helps you or anyone else who reads it.

Jay, you are the best. I tried adding more sus chords- great. Also not feeling so tied to the bass note. I'd love to figure out some formula, like ii chords can sub for IV chords, etc. I'm still just feelin it out. Got a decent version of Shout to the Lord going, now working on Lean on Me with my choir and Amazing Grace (solo). Listening to your great youtubes, Jay. You guys are an awesome team here at LGM. I feel welcome - bless you all for sharing!
