Title: What do you honestly suggest/think
Post by: bass_asaph on May 31, 2008, 08:30:46 AM
hey LGM,aint been here in a while cos ive currently got exams.Hope everyone's still about their father's business.Ive got 2 questions and i'll like ur honest contributions:

I want to refurbish my bass i.e change the strings,pick-up,lower the action e.t.c. What kind of strings would you suggest i use and generally what did you guys do when you 'upgraded' your basses.

What bass book and DVD's do you recommend bearing in mind that im intermediate.ive seen a bevy of them but ive a bit skeptical about which ones would be most effective (so to speak).God bless you guys and keep thumping and fingering for the lord.

Let me ask two questions of you:

What kind of bass do you play?  And what kind of sound are you trying for?

The answers to those two questions will help us better answer your questions.

Check out  www.bassguitarsecrets.com  by Alex sampson Ive got his home study course, and I think. Its a good place to start. From beginner to advance, if you ever learn a scale, mode, chord, etc, and ask the question what do I do with this, or how to help open your mind about being creative, learning the basics on reading or even how to put things together. This book is for you It opens your mind up step by step, Its a good course, not like some of the dvds, and books out there that leave you with no clue. Check it out, but the thing is you have to stick with the program. We can be lead to the water, but they cant make us drink it, also find a  mentor or teacher to help guide you. So check out the site it works for me, and it could work for you. If thats what your looking for on the site he will tell you what he's all about.  Take care god bless!

I don't want to sound harsh but you didn't answer the question. What's the name of the bass? by that we mean brand? model? This helps out because pickups are different from bass to bass. If you decide to upgrade those, we'll have to know what kind are in your current bass and make recommendations. To really get an understanding of you wants, we still need to know the model, because someone may have that bass and they may have the sound you're looking for already. thanks

Personally I use DR Stainless Steel Low Riders on my Basses, It gives me crazy bottom, their longevity is legendary and they sound great in all styles of playing via finger, slap, pick.
