Title: Roscoe out... Callowhill in! (New bass content w/ pics)
Post by: bassthumpa on June 30, 2008, 11:19:58 AM
I posted this over at TB and figured I'd share with the crew here...

I called Tim @ Callowhill on Friday to talk about his Junk series since I've been gassin' for one lately, and it turns out that my timing was perfect.  I mentioned that I'd be selling my Roscoe 6'er and was looking to get my hands on a Junk, but was hoping that there would be a J5 in stock so I wouldn't have to mess with any loaner axe.  It turns out that he actually has a 6-string Junk prototype that is almost ready... the only thing that it needs is a custom hipshot bridge which is a couple of weeks out.  He had a dealer that was getting ready to post it as a coming soon item", but he was willing to give me first stab at it.

He sent me the pics, and I knew right away that I had to have it so I called dibs on it immediately.  Since my Roscoe has a buyer and we'll be completing the sale this week, that will seal the deal and this baby will be coming my way as soon as the bridge is ready!

And because we all know the rules... here are the pics!

When he told me it was a natural finish, was tempted to have him refinish it to the burst like Tone Whitfield has on his J or put a pickguard on it because that's what got my GAS going at first.  But man, when I saw these pics... that natural finish just sings all by itself so I'm not gonna mess with it.

I can't wait to get it in my hands!

Specs... figured ash body, pau ferro FB, maple neck, Nordstrand Big Split p/u's, Aggie OBP-3 pre w/ VTC.

That is tight!!  I'm hoping to talk to Tim about my Junk5 next week.  But I'm gonna have to wait the full time.  The grain on the bass is sick and that fretboard is sweet!!
Congrats man!!

Yes sir!  Turns out this one wasnt for Mo Fitz after all, he said Mo wants a 4, kinda like a black one that he put together recently (which looked incredibly HOT).

At first when you put the Roscoe up for sale I thought, "Has that boy lost his mind?  What is he think.....[sees the Callowhill] Oh.....Oh my.......Well now.   I ain't mad at ya, hoss!"

Now remember, sound clips are MANDATORY

Peace,

James

I just scored a Motif es7, so I'll have to wait on my Callowhill. The good news is that I don't have to turn down gigs because I don't have a keyboard. Which means, more cash flow, thus a new bass soon.

Wow Thumpa, let me know when you plug that thing in so I can look into the Horizon in ATX and see the sonic waves...

Congrats, that's a think of beauty... maybe one day when I grow up....LOL!

With all my Travel expenses lately... the only G.A.S.  I can satisfy, is putting some strings on lay-a-way.

But I rejoice with you Brother!

What pickup location are you going with, Jeremy?

I wish I could hear that 2-7 spacing.
basshthumpa, you gotta let us know what that's like.  Sound clips would be the best way.  ;D

for this one I'm going with a completely passive bass

70's pickup spacing (i like the 60's a whole lot, but I'm going to give the 70's a shot)
Nordstand Dual coils with a switch for series/single/parallel for each pickup.

You should have all kinds of options right there.  I'm leaning towards the 70's too...at this moment. lol

2-7 spacing is callowhills take on 70's jazz bass pickup spacing.

Yep, developed by Tim and Mo Fitz.

The bridge pickup is in the same spot as a 70's, but the neck pickups is just a hair closer to the neck than a 70's.  It allows for a little more ooomf if you're slap/poppin' with the blend set in the middle.

Well, got payment for my Roscoe today and it is now on it's way to France.  International shipping is EXPENSIVE!!!  Just about $550 from Austin to Paris, and that doesn't even count the customs fees he's gonna have to pay when it gets there!  Dude must have really wanted it, or can afford to put down that much on getting it.

Meanwhile, I just sent the full payment for my J6.  I can't wait to get it!

bassthumpa,
Very nice acquisition. Congratulation!
I had a very similar looking Valenti J5 with the same pickups and preamp. exception was the wenge board.
It was a great player, however I traded for a Sadowsky MV5.
Just curious what are you going to play until it arrives? I only see the Roscoe in your profile.

Here's the similar Valenti...

Edit: My bad, those are dual coil Nordy pickups tonal camelion

No doubt we need a support group.  It's gonna be a long wait, especially thinking about it every dern day.  Patience is a very tough one for me, but the older I get...
I'm cool with it.

Now where do I sign up for that support group.

It all depends on hipshot, he's doing some finishing touches on it, so the bridge is really the only missing piece.  Tim is actually more frustrated about it than I am (cuz I'm not really furstrated at all, lol).  He sent me and email last night saying that he was gonna turn up the heat on those guys to get the bridge done, so I'm sure someone over there will be feeling a bit of fire.  8)

I want to ask a quick question because I've been out of the LGm loop for a while. What does these Callowhill basses bring that Ken smith, MTD, Roscoe, or any other boutique basses are missing???? The reason Im asking is because the  Lord has blessed me and my wife with a new house, and I have a new job that allows me to finally justify buying a boutique bass?

It's all subjective.  Some may feel that <X> offers something that <y> or <z> don't, others feel the complete opposite, some mixed somewhere in the middle.

It's all about what feels good in your hands and sounds good to you, because one person's preference is NEVER gonna apply to everyone.  Try them all if you can and find what's right for you.

For me, from what I've seen and heard, this axe should give me the feel and tone that I've been wanting lately.  Does that make it better than my previous Roscoe basses?  For me perhaps, but in general, not necessarily.

I have also read that Tim worked very closely with a few notable gospel bassists in the development of the Callowhill bass and it's sound.  No other company has really catered to this genre.  I can repsect that.  He seems to really want to give you exactly what you want and not want to break the bank while doing it considering what he gives you in the end, which is a very high quality instrument.  Now I'm just waiting until I got the extra money to pick up one from him too.

When I received my Alembic basses, I went to the FedEx terminal to pick them up.  They arrived the same week, like 2 or 3 days apart and I opened them right there in the FedEx office so that I could pitch the shipping material and fit them in my car.  Then I went back a couple days later to ship out another Alembic that I had sold to help pay for the two that came in.

At the time my wife and I both worked a long way away from home and I didn't want FedEx leaving these boxes on my front porch.

The shipping clerk was like "and what do you do for a living?"

Those delivery dudes are no joke... I've been standing maybe 15 feet from the front door when they rang the doorbell once, and by the time I got to the door (maybe 5 seconds, no joke), this guy was already in his truck and taking off.  He must have been running to the truck as soon as he hit the button!

That's exactly why I used to have expensive items shipped to my office instead of home.  Now that wifey is home most of the time, I don't have to worry about it as much.  I have good neighbors too so that's no worry.

Same here.  I used to get stuff shipped to the office when I was in Florida.  Plus, I was buying and selling pretty regularly.  Now I'm in a pretty big building in City Hall, don't buy and sell as much, my wife works a lot from home, and the neighbors seem cool.

Still might go pick up the CallowHill when it's done.  Good reason for a mini vacay.  ;D

There's a nordy for sale on TB and it has me considering making a bit of a cosmetic change down the road.  Right now it has the standard Sadowsky black aluminum knobs, and it looks great.  But do you think knobs like this would make it look even mo' gooder?

I'll have to kick that idea around sometime.  Right now I'm just ready to get my hands on it as it is!

True.  She looks great naked (a statement that said alound would make our wives stop and give us the eye of death), but I keep considering what kind of pickguard I'd want to put on it, if any.  If I did, I'd want a plate for the pots too and the stacked pot would be left hanging since it's not in line with the others.   That is, unless there's one that I haven't seen before that accomodates such a thing.

Those shiny knobs really are talkin' to me tho!

For a bass that classy I would suggest getting a pickguard custom made from a contrasting wood or from the same type wood you have on the fingerboard.  Then you could design it to curve down around ALL your knobs, P-Bass style.

Here's a couple examples.  The 5-string is mine.  The fretless belongs to the guy who designed the bodystyle.

Peace,

James

Wow man, that's prett tight.  Who did that pickguard for you two?

If I add one, I'd want it to be something to blend the pau ferro with the rest of the body like yours does...

There's still a sizable part of my that is saying "Don't mess with it!"... we'll see when I get it.  I'll defintely leave it as is for a while before I put any serious thought into any changes.

Wow man, that's prett tight.  Who did that pickguard for you two?

...

The basses were made by elusive Jake Marchlewski.  Jon Clark (Wolfehollow on Talkbass) came up with the design and Jake built the fretless for him.  He also had Stambaugh build a similar single cut version.  I talked to Jon to get the ok to have Jake build mine from Jon's design.  The pickguard was part of the design.  Jake made about a dozen or so basses and then sorta disappeared after his child was born.  Don't know if he's gonna continue as a luthier or not.

Peace,

James

Dude, that's tight!!

It's 2-7 spacing?  I REALLY like the grain on that body, the contrast of the pau ferro and ash, and the curved knob layout!

She's here!

Very first impression... I knew it would be super light, but MAN!  If I didn't know any better, I would have guessed that the case was empty!  Visually, she's impressively elegant, and feels great in hand.

I'm about to run to rehearsal to break her in, I'll be back later with more details.

Choir rehearsal turned into a choir meeting with the pastor. I suck when it comes to reviewing gear and describing tonal details, but in the little time that I've had to actually play it, I can say that this axe is STRONG.

It's VERY well balanced physically and tonally. I've sometimes had a tough time on my previous basses finding a good balance across all strings because the B was almost TOO strong. So far with the J6, the B can punch a hole in your chest, but doesn't completely dominate the bass in relation to the other strings (with active pre set flat).

Playability is a breeze. The neck is just what I hoped for, and is pretty much like the neck on my Roscoe's. Tim set the action super low for me and it is soooooo easy to play. With my Comfort Strapp (http://www.comfortstrapp.com/), it's practically weightless with no neck dive.  Strap locks included!

I'll be taking it on the road for a fellowship servie tonight, so I'll report more later.

Post by: jmain on September 06, 2008, 07:01:56 PM
That's a good review to me!!  I'm definitely looking for a usuable B that is just like an extension of the other strings - not too boomy, but tight and punchy.

Did you get the 2-7 spacing or 70's?

You're probably in the thick of the service.  I know I'll be logging in to see how that went.
Title: Re: Roscoe out... Callowhill in! (New bass content w/ pics)
Post by: bassthumpa on September 07, 2008, 04:16:15 PM
It has the 2-7 spacing.

This thing is sooooo easy to play!  I think it's a combination of the 34" scale or what, and the low-to-the-flo' action.  Yesterday we did extended shout runs that would have had my left wrist tightening up any other time, but not with the J6.  It took me a while before I looked down at my hands like whoa... still going strong with no sign of weakening.

So yeah, my hands are wrists are loving the J6.

My Roscoe 6'er was relatively heavy (mainly because of the mahogany body), and I'd find myself having to stretch out a bit after a while of playing while standing.  That's one thing I missed from my Roscoe 5'er that the 6'er lacked.  Sitting or standing, the J6 is ultra-light and practically floats on the strap.

So yeah, my back is loving the J6.

Tone, tone, tone.  Every time I play this thing and get more accustomed to the Nordie/Aggie setup, I dig it more and more and more.  Today I set the LMII completely flat as usual, but with the VLE and VPF completely off.  Didn't need it.  Kept the Nordies dead even, raised the mids a hair, and I was good to go.  This bass completely trashes the idea that an ultra-lightweight bass can't hang with dense wood bodied basses.  The only difference is that it doesn't ring out as loud unplugged compaired to the heavies... but if that's what I wanted, I'd buy an acoustic.  Duh.

I've never owned or played a passive bass before, so I expected to lose a little something if I switched to passive mode.  No sir!  I pulled it up with the tone completely rolled off, and I lost NOTHING but a hair of gain.

So yeah... my ears are loving the J6.

That's all for now, I gotta pack up and hit the road to DFW.  I'm taking my gear with me, so perhaps I'll post a clip of my crappy playing that doesn't do this bass justice, lol!
