Title: Using Sequence when you play.
Post by: octopus on January 11, 2005, 03:45:36 PM
Sup guys,

Do any of you guys use sequence during the praise and worship at your church? This Firday were going to try it out for the first time. We got really excited about the idea and went ahead and i got myself a PowerBook G4 and have basically made like 6 songs on it. The main purpose for the sequence is to fill in the gap for the guitars that we dont have, and the brass and synth player that we dont have. Well, we basically got all the instruments (*excluding the drums the piano, the bass and the lead voice, since we are going to be doing that) recorded on the sequence and then we panned everything to the right and got the click to the left. That way we connect to the mixer, and have the sequence playing out in the house and the click in our earmonitors. I got a question, has anyone done this before, and how did it work out with the click, and trying to follow it.

A week ago during soundcehck we tried it out to see how it would come out but it was really hard follow the click since my drums are so loud and and i cant do nothing about it. On stage we each have our own personal mixers, which we connect with our head phones and i try to follow the click alone by lowering everything else just enough so i can guide myself but still, the drumset over-powers the click in my earmonitors. I was thinking of buying isolation earphones. Do you think this would work? Thanks guys

I've never used a sequencer live, but I have tried using it a couple of times outside of my church and I use a metronome. I agree that using isolation headphones make a world of difference. They may look a little goofy but I think that they should do the trick.

We use a sequencer with a lot of our choir songs.
I have a Roland SP 808ex that I can plug my Shure E1s
directly in to. I'll tell you one thing; playing to
pre-recorded tracks makes you real honest about how
good your time is. There's only a few tracks we use
that don't have a drum track playing, and we are forced
to use the click. It takes a while to get used to the
click. Like I said make drum loops for most of the
tracks we use. It fills the music a little more and is
easier to play along with for everyone. So I would
suggest making a little drum loop to play along with.
It makes it a little easier, and sounds sick when
the band breaks it down and the drum loop is still
going.

at my church (world changers) we use clicks on some songs. i think you may be having a problem hearing because of:
a) you have your drums cranked up in your monitor.
b) your headphones don't isolate you from everything else. i suggest the vic firth black stereo headphones, they are what i use and they work fine.

Thanks for your thoughts. The problem is that my Sony headphones don't isolate the drums, so i can't even here the click that well. I have the option to raise the volume but i dont want to raise so much that it can affect my hearing. So i guess isolating is the best way to go. I have these construction ear muffs which work well. I would use these small ear phones and then the ear muffs over them. It would give me the same effect as the vicfirth isolation headphones. The musicians best frind is that click! Im telling you man, without it (while using sequence) your going to end up playing the back beat backwards on 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4 if you know what i mean. LOL.
Guys keep posting on your experiences.

God Bless.
