Is there anything I should know before I go and test out a bunch of guitars? My budget is $500, but Im willing to spend more for what I want if neccessary. So far I've spent most of my practive time playing a steel string accoustic guitar at home. What should I be looking for outside of sound and feel?

...if you like hollowbodies aria pro II is really nice....I use a dean palomino which has 3 p 90 pickups and that is really nice for the price. If you go with epiphone , go for the elitist series....they play as close to the expensive gibson version as Ive seen.

The G&L tribute series really shocked me. $500 range. I thought they played and sounded every bit as good as the American Fenders!

PRS SE singlecut. Awesome guitar. It has a wonderful sound that is more a little more trebbley than standard humbuckers, and it plays wonderfully.

Ditto on the PRS SE. I tried it out at GC and it was such a clean guitar.

my advice....buy used

Any of the SE series would be a good bet (I'd personally go for a Custom 22) although you may find that the single pick up models to be a bit limiting. Other than that, they are a line of well-built, good sounding guitars on the cheap (there is a new model that's out that retails near the $1,000.00 mark though).

about 85% of my current rig i bought used on Craigslist, including my tele. best playin guitar i have and i didnt do a thing to it when i got it 'cept put a bone nut, and get it set up to my liking. paid a little over 300 for it cuz the guy tried to manually age the guitars body (sanding on some edges).

Thanks for the advice. Spent about 2 hours at guitar center. I know why they call it guitar center now. I usually hangout in the keyboard section where there's not many people. Over in the guitar section, it was crowded and LOUD. I got to play a lot of guitars though! I concentrated on sound and feel and tried to avoid looking at cosmetics and price. Overall, I liked the squeir affinity series telecastor and the fender american although I did not play any hollow or semi hollow bodies. I plan on going back and probably spending another 2 hrs.

I'm actually surprised no one mentioned a good ol' Mexi strat.

A Mexican Fender isn't a bad guitar as a whole, but you'll be swapping pickups pretty quickly, from what I've been told (by owners).
But, hey, Henry Garza plays 'em, and he's rich lol.

His Mexi-Strats are mongrels, so to speak. I think his are a combination of the Standard body with a re-issue neck and pick ups. But the Mexican Standard Strat aint a bad guitar at all....but in that price range, you may want to check out the Squier Vintage Modified, Classic Vibe, or Deluxe series Stratocasters.
