Title: Top 5 Favorite Books of All Time
Post by: Arkhams Finest on April 19, 2012, 09:13:11 AM
Please don't list the bible.  We know you're saved.   :D

For a series, don't list each book separately as really they're just a continuation of one story.

1) Game of Thrones (series)
2) Lord of the Rings (series)
3) The Hunger Games (series)
4) The Grace of God
5) The Catcher in the Rye

The Bible.

Lord of the Rings is deep - not explicitly Christian, but you can see the morality behind it. I like the parts the movies left out, like the Hobbits' adventures with Tom Bombadil, and the cleansing of the Shire.

Like to read broadly, many types and genres. mostly non-fiction, but lately have started to read more fiction. Some are page-turning but underwhelming, like the Twilight series and James Patterson novels. Others, like Sherlock Holmes stories and C.S. Lewis' Narnia series, merit rereads...

*giggle*

No seriously... I'm going to add to my post because I know I can't think of all 5 at one time.

1. Becoming a Person of Influence by John Maxwell

2. The Prophetic Intercessor by James W. Goll

3. Understanding Prophetic People by R. Loren Sanford

4. Jesus, CEO by Laurie Beth Jones

5. I need to get home and see what's on my shelf...

This is hard to answer because
1) I've read so many books in the last 24 months that are so good and
2) There are many more I plan to read (that I haven't read yet).

With all that said:
1) "Winning With People" by John Maxwell
2) A tie between "The Pursuit of Holiness" and "The Practice of Godliness" both by Jerry Bridges
3) "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan (book really challenged me in serving God wholeheartedly because of His love to me)
4) "Search For Signifcance" by Robert McGee

Ugh!

I'm going to do my favorite recently. I can't narrow all-time down to 5.

1. Visioneering by Andy Stanley
2. The Me I Want To Be by John Ortberg
3. Made To Stick by Dan and Chip Heath
4. Blue Like Jazz by Don Miller
5. Crazy Love by Francis Chan

Honorable mentions: Swtich by Dan and Chip Heath, When People Are Big and God Is Small by Edward Welch, and Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foer.

Ah, the same guy who wrote The Grace of God.   :)

I've been considering getting Enemies of the Heart by Mr. Stanley as well.

Oh yes, Mr. Stanley is a favorite of mine. I have several of his books (including Grace of God). Sometimes I don't like how he has to tell a long story to get to the main point, but I always enjoy him. That book, Visioneering, is a book I read daily. It's just PACKED with wisdom for anyone pursuing a vision. I'd recommend it to anyone.

That's the biggest part of reading some of these Christian books that I hate. I mean the story is fine (my pastor uses a lot of stories too) but I'm kind of like "what's the point of application you want me to have?"....LOL!
